The full moon climbs over the eastem horizon and hangs like a huge
orange globe in the sky A few hours later, the moon is overhead but seems to
have changed The huge orange globe has become a small silver disk What has
happened? Why has the orange colour disappeared? Why does the moon seem
so much smallern and farther away now that it is overhead?
The moon appears orange on the horizon because we view it though the dust of the atmosphere The overhead moon does not really shrink as it moves away from the horizon Our eyes inform us that the overhead moon is farther away But in this position the moon is actually closer to our eyes than when it is near the horizon
The change in size is a trick our eyes and minds play on us When the moon is low in the sky, we can compare its size with familiar objects It is easy
to see that the moon is much larger than trees or buildings, for example When the moon is high in the sky, however, it is hard to compare it with objects on earth Compared to the vastness of the sky, the moon seems small
There is another reason why the moon seems to shink We are used to gazing at objects straight ahead of us When an object is difficult to see, our eyes have to train to focus on it When we tilt our heads back to look up, there is
a similar strain Looking at something from an unaccustomed position can fool you into believing an object is completely why the moon seems to shrink as it rises in the sky
1.The word in paragraph 4 that means looking is

A.An orange moon is better than a silver moon
B.We cannot make measurements with our eyes alone

A.the moon is too close to earth these days

A.seeming changes in the size of the moon

No, for people have fought their way from quicksand to firmland again It is panic that creates the condition that canresult in death, for the more a person struggles, the worse matters become Quick movements will make the sand yield temporarily, but then it rushes back and settles solidly around the body People trapped in quicksand should either lie back with arms outstretched, or not move

Around 335 B.C in ancient Greece, the great teacher Plato told a story about a place called Atlantis Plato described Atlantis as a continent in the Atlantic Ocean He said it had been the home of a powerful people who were destroyed when the continent was suddenly swallowedby the sea
Ever since Plato’s time, people have wondered if the story about Atlantis was really true. Was there ever such a place as Atlantis? Durring the Middle Ages, many people believed in the legend of Atlantis Some men even made voyages to find the ‘’lost continent” Later most people believed Atlantis to be just a myth Scientists could find no evidence to show that such a place had ever existed
Ideas change in time, however, for now some scientists think that Atlantis may have been a real place A Greek professor has offered a new teory
He says that Atlantis was not a continent in the Atlantis Ocean but an island called Thera in the Aegean Sea The professor says that 3,500 years ago much
of Thera collapsed into the sea when a volcano erupted He thinks that before the explosion Thera had been the home of a people called Minoans Minoans were sea traders who ruled the Aegean Sea from 2000 B.C to 1250 B.C
Scientists who have come to investigate Thera have found an ancient city buried beneath volcanic ash and stones It appears that the people who lived

What do we see when we go to the movies? Do we see real movement or only the illusion of movement? What is a ‘motion’ picture?
A ‘motion’ picture is actually a series of still pictures shown one after another so quickly that the human eye blends them together In one second, twenty-four separate pictures are flashed on the screen Between one picture and the next there is an instant of darkness while the projector moves the film forward Human eyes are not quick enough to see these pictures separately Our eyes hold one image until the next is shown We are not aware of the instant when the screen is dark
Are still pictures that seem to move the only illusion in movies? No Motion pictures present us with many illusion Suppose there is a scene showing
a storm at sea Often the ships used in these scenes are models, only inches long, and the waves only ripples Such scenes are frequently staged in tanks the size of small swimming pools Special machines produce waves to order inside the tanks
