Lesson Plan 25(grade 11 – advanced) Period 97: Preparation date : 1/3/2011 Unit 12 : Lesson : Hobbies I. Aims : - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to skim and scan for information - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to express their ideas about hobbies. II. Lexical items : - take it up - serious - permanent - indefinitely - duplicate - include III. Structures : - Whatever the activity level, all types can require high levels of expertise - As a pastime, it provides hours of pleasure…… - It is only when a collection is properly labeled that it has real value. IV. Teaching aids: - textbook - picture / drawings - chalk - handouts V. Techniques : - Skill – based ( reading, speaking) VI. Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. Warm- up & lead- in (7’) Checking Vocabulary: “Rub out and remember” - rub out the words and leave the explanations on the board. - point at each explanation and have SS speak out the word - again, point at any explanation ( not in the order written on the board) and have SS to call Summarize the main ideas of p1 and p2 - call on a St to summarize the text which they learnt last time - comment and correct them out the word Transition: to understand more clearly about the text, today we’ll learn the comprehension. – Write on the board: Period 97 : Unit 12 : Hobbies (cont) Chalk and board. 2. Pre- reading (7’) Teaching Vocabulary - write new words on the bb. - elicit meanings from Sts New words: - take it up : bat dau thuc hien - serious (a): Chalk and board or give explanations yourself - leave some minutes for Sts to copy. - give some practice on pronunciation ( T reads – Sts repeat in chorally, then asks Sts to read individually.) nghiem tuc, nghiem trang - permanent (a) : vinh vien, lau dai - indefinitely (adj) : ko xac dinh duoc, mai mai - include (n) : bao gom 3. while - reading (17’) Activity 1: Wh-questions (question 3) - arrange SS into pairs. - Get SS to read through the questions to know what is being asked. - Ask SS to read the text * questions: 3. why is a good coin collection an investment? Chalk + book + small board and answer the questions. - call on SS to speak out the answers - invite class opinions and give feedback. Activity 2: Table completion ( task b, textbook , p. 165) - put SS into pairs - Have SS read the text again and complete the table - swap partners and have SS to compare their answers - call on SS to write the answers up on the board - go over the answers with * expected answers: - coin collection: + valuable + long-lasting + heavy - shell collection + requires little care + does not break + long – lasting + heavy + needs proper labeling the class 4. Post- reading (10’) Summary : ( handouts) - ask SS to work in groups of 4 - Ask SS to read the text again and complete the summary below using the words provided - go around giving help if necessary - call on some SS to summary - invite class opinions and textbooks give feedback. 5. Homework (2’) - Ask Sts to learn new words by heart and review the today’s lesson. - Prepare the rest of lesson. Book and notebook .
