CÁC BÀI ÔN LUYỆN HAY (2) I. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Today Vietnam is still suffering from the effects of the war. The Vietnam War killed or injured many people, and destroyed the natural environment and resources too. During the war, the U.S. sprayed herbicides on forests and croplands. They did this intentionally to weaken the patriotic militants who were hiding in the forests and who depended on rice crops. Americans who opposed the Vietnam War called this tactic "ecocide," which means "killing the environment." In ten years from 1961-71, about 72 million liters of herbicides were sprayed over southern Vietnam. More than half was Agent Orange, which contains a very poisonous dioxin. So everything was poisoned: water, soil, air, plants, crops, animals, and people. As a result, there were many birth defects and diseases. Bombing and land clearing by tanks also destroyed the environment. The Vietnamese say that there are about 25 million bomb craters across the country. Overall, 7,800,000 hectares of forests and farms were lost or damaged. In recent years, the Vietnamese have taken steps to restore their forests. For example, tree planting has become a regular school activity. A primary school student should plant one tree each year, a junior high school student two trees, and a senior high school student three trees. Even today in Vietnam, not only students but also parents are planting trees. Tree planting is a good thing, but it is better to avoid the destruction of forests. In the Vietnam War, and more recently in the Gulf War, the natural environment was used as a weapon. This harms our planet. There should be an international ban on such actions.
