Unit 13: HOBBIES Section: Listening  Class: 11/ 4  Teacher in charge: Hoang Viet Hien Huong Thuy Upper Secondary School  Time allotted: 45 minutes  Aims: - to help students practice listening skill (especially listening for gist and listening for specific information) - to help students familiarize with the tasks of T/ F statements and gap- filling  Objective: by the end of the lesson, the students will be able to know more about the hobby of reading and know how to write a summary  Lexical items: gigantic (adj), profitable (adj), jungle (n), disease (n), ignorantly (adv)  Teaching aids: blackboard, textbook, posters, tape, cassette, etc. Procedure:  Warm-up: Shark attack (8’) - Teacher gives instruction: “First, I would like to divide you into 2 teams: Team A and team B. Now I have one word in my mind. Each team will in turn read aloud any letter in the alphabet. If your letter is correct, you will stand at your position, but if your guessing is wrong, you will step down in the stair. Which team can guess the word before you fall into the shark’s mouth firs will be the winner.” KEY: READING - Give time for students to play the game - Give feedback  Lead-in: (1’) “Do you like reading?” “Today we’ll continue to discover another hobby – reading and see what its benefit is.” I. Pre-listening: 1. Vocabulary (7’): - Teacher elicits and presents new words + gigantic (adj): khổng lồ “This word means very very big” (explanation) + profitable (adj): có lợi “What’s another word for “beneficial”?” (synonym) + jungle (n): rừng rậm “How do you say “rừng rậm” in English?” (translation) + disease (n): bệnh tật “I feel very tired. I have a disease. What does the word “disease” mean?” (example) + ignorantly (adv): ngu dốt “What’s another word for “stupid”?” (synonym) - Teacher checks students understanding of new words: Rub out and Remember 2. T/ F Statements Prediction: (5’) - Teacher sets the scene: + Teacher draws on the blackboard a boy who is reading books. + Teacher asks some questions: “What is he doing?” “Do you think reading is his hobby?” Right. Now, let’s guess what is the boy talking about his hobby of reading books. - Teacher shows the poster: T F 1. The writer started his hobby when he was young. 2. The writer didn’t start with ABC book. 3. Now he can reads all the books available. 4. Reading helps the writer to know many things. 5. According to the writer, by reading he does not have to study hard. 6. Books might help him in his daily life. - Ask students to read the statements carefully - Ask students to work in pairs and guess the statements are T or F by ticking () in the box. - Give time for students to do the task II. While-listening: 1. T/ F Statements (7’) - Teacher plays the tape 1 – 2 times - Teacher checks students’ answer. - Teacher gives feedback and play the tape again (if necessary) 2. Finding mistakes: (10’) - Teacher gives the hand-out: - Ask students to read the passage carefully. - Teacher gives instruction: “You now will hear a boy talking about his hobby – reading books. There are some mistakes in the passage in your hand-out. Listen carefully and find them out” - Play the tape 1 – 2 times for students to do the task - Ask some students to give their answer - Give feedback and play the tape again (if necessary) 3. Game (7’) (1) The wonder thing about reading is that I do not have to learn things the very hard way. (2) For example, I do not have to catch a dish to know that it can kill me. (3) I know the danger so I can avoid it. (4) Also I do not have to deep into the june to find out about tigers. (5) I can read all about it in a book. (6) Books provide the reader with so many facts and so much information. (7) They have certain helped me in my daily life. (8) I am better equipped to cope with living. (9) Otherwise I would go about ignorant learning things the hard way. (10) So I continue to read. Reading is indeed a good hobby. - Teacher gives instruction: “First, I would like to divide the class into four teams: team A, team B, team C and team D. Team A and team B will give the reasons to support reading books, team B will give the reasons to say that we should not read books. You will have 3 minutes to collect the ideas and write out in your paper. Then, the representative of each tem will bring your paper to show in the board. Which team has more suitable reason will be the winner.” - Teacher draws on the blackboard a table: ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES - provide knowledge - not good for eyes - … - … - … - … - … - … - … - … - Teacher gives a reason as an example - Give time for students to do the task - Ask representative of each team to go to the blackboard and write out their words - Give feedback III. Post-listening (1’) Homework: Write a paragraph of 50 words to answer the question: In your opinion, we should or should not read books. Giving the reasons to support your ideas. .
