You can freeze a frame in your clip for a period of time to highlight an important moment in your project. 1 Drag your cursor over a clip to locate the frame you want to freeze. 2 -click the clip. 3 Click Add Freeze Frame from the menu that appears. iMovie adds a still photo to the project using the frame from your clip. You can use the techniques covered above to edit the still photo. iMovie opens the Inspector. ● You can type a number of seconds to change the duration of the still photo. ● You can click here to add a photo effect such as a color change or a vignette. Note: For more about effects, see Chapter 10. 7 Click Done to close the Inspector and save your changes. ● iMovie inserts the still with a default duration of four seconds. Note: By default, iMovie adds subtle panning and zooming, also known as a Ken Burns effect, to the inserted photo. Adjust the Ken Burns Effect When you add a still photo to a project, iMovie automatically adds a Ken Burns effect, which is a slight panning and zooming as the photo appears. This can make a normally motionless slide more interesting. You can adjust the panning and zooming in the effect or turn it off altogether. Ken Burns is a documentary director known for using panning and zooming when presenting old photographs in his movies. How can I swap the starting and ending positions in a Ken Burns effect? You can click the swap icon ( ) in the Crop tool to swap the starting and ending positions of a still photo in a Ken Burns effect. 4 Click and drag the center of the green box to change the starting position. 5 Click and drag a corner handle of the green box to change the starting zoom. 6 Make the same adjustments to the red box to change the ending position and zoom. 7 You can click to preview the effect. You can turn off the Ken Burns effect by selecting a different display option. ● Click Fit to fit the entire clip in the frame and add black borders if needed. These borders are called letterboxes on the top and bottom and pillarboxes on the sides. ● Click Crop to fill the entire frame with the clip. This may result in cropping depending on the aspect ratios of the clip and the project. 8 Click Done to exit the Crop tool. 166 33 22 11 1 Click to open the music and sound effects browser. 2 Click the list to view available songs. ● You can click to play a selected song. ● You can type a song or artist name to search for a song. 3 Click and drag a song to the outside edge of the project browser. Note: To add a song as background music, do not drag it onto a clip. ● The project browser background turns green or purple, depending on the type of song you are adding. 4 Release the mouse button. iMovie adds the song as background music. ● The name and how long the song plays appear here. Add Background Music You can add background music to your iMovie project to complement the theme of your movie. You can use songs from iTunes or GarageBand for your background music. You can change when the background song begins and ends using the Clip Trimmer. 1 Click the edit icon ( ). 2 Click Clip Trimmer in the menu that appears. ● iMovie opens the Clip Trimmer and displays the song as a waveform, which is a graphical representation of the notes. 3 Click and drag the yellow handle to set when the song begins as background music. ● You can click to preview the edited song. 4 To set when the song ends, scroll to the end of the song and adjust the ending handle. ● You can click to play your movie with the new music. 5 If your movie is longer than the song, you can click and drag additional songs to fill the entire project with music. After you add a sound effect, you can move it to just the right frame in your movie and also adjust the volume. Reducing the volume of one source of audio as another one plays is called ducking. You can double-click a sound effect icon in your project and then click Audio. You can give the sound effect priority over other sounds using the ducking settings. For more about adjusting music and sound effects, see “Adjust Volume.” How do I turn the sound off when I skim clips? Sometimes the audio accompaniment can be distracting when you are editing a project. You can click the Audio Skimming button ( ) below the viewer to silence the audio when you drag your cursor across, or skim, clips in the project and event browsers. 5 Click and drag to add more sound effects from the music and sound effects browser. Sound effects can overlap one another in a project. Note: To change the volume of a sound effect and other audio in your project, see “Adjust Volume.” ● iMovie displays a green icon where the sound effect is added. You can click and drag the icon to change when the effect plays. You can select multiple video clips and make changes to their audio all at once.
