Abstract This research paper indicated ways to avoid cyberbullying on the Internet The studied subjects are adolescents The data collection methods in this study were searching, reading, and analyzing 13 articles relating to the topic According to the findings of numerous investigation reports, 1t was concluded that to avoid cyberbullying, solutions should include providing education and training, maintaining clear policies and procedures, creating a sales reporting mechanism, enabling third-party

intervention and supporting behavior changes that can lead to a reduction in exposure

to online abuse By taking proactive actions, adolescents produced safe, supportive, and decent digital social environments and contributed to a perfect society where everyone is equal Therefore, cyberbullying on the Internet is a challenging issue that requies comprehensive solutions

I INTRODUCTION

Cyberbullying among adolescents has become a significant matter In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend where teens are victims of cyber harassment is highly increasing Today, nearly all teenagers utilize and have get to the Internet; study

of 12 to 17 year olds by Pew Internet & American Life Project (2014) shows that more than 90% of adolescents are accessible, and 74% of them use smartphones, computers

or other digital technologies to access the Internet It is rated by Rideout et al., (2010) that adolescents now use technology for less than 8 hours a day and that 1/4 of this time is spent on various social media platforms continuously (Brown & Bobkowski, 2011) According to research conducted by Nansel et al (2001), 74% of 8-11 year-old high school students said that teasing and harassing online took place at their schools From the point of view of various inquiries, this design of interpersonal online harassment is common among teens, with some reviews (Juvonen, Gross., 2008; Katzer et al., 2009) indicating that about less than 80% of high school students admitted that they have already been victims to cyber harassment at least once a year These statistics seem to be an alert to wake up people and raise their awareness, particularly, parents of adolescents who are putting up with online harassment, about serious consequences that this social evil causes It could be argued that adolescents are too young to endure this pain of mind It is important to conduct efficient solutions

to stop such incidents from occuring This research paper examines the current situation of cyberbullying on the Internet and offers effective solutions to ensure safe, supportive, and respectful digital social environments for all youngsters In a research cyberbullying (Beale & Hall, 2007) suggested that:

All students are potential victims of electronic bullying aimed at inflicting unwarranted hurt and embarrassment on its unsuspecting victims To assist the victims of cyberbullying and develop interventions aimed at preventing it, educators need to be informed about cyberbullying, the forms it takes, and what strategies or actions they might take to combat it in their schools

In this article, the author mentions the situation of cyberbullying in recent years, causes and consequences of cyberbullying on the Internet, and then gives solutions on how to avoid this matter

II MAIN CONTENT

2.1, Definition

Cyberbullying is a form of bullying with the use of digital devices Unlike traditional harassment, it can occur over messaging apps, gaming platforms, and other mobile technologies, particularly social networking sites and it can take place at any time regardless of day or night It is considered consistent way of acting, aimed at intimidating, threatening, embarrassing, or damaging reputation of those who are targeted by sending offensive text messages The Internet has presented new cyberspcaces for risk taking that include teenage participation in virtual interpersonal violence While young people engage in different types of online interpersonal violence (such as, cyberdating violence, and cyber-banging), cyberbullying-both as a victim and perpetrator, is the form of virtual interpersonal violence that has received the most attention (Elsaesser et al., 2017) Tokunaga (2010) described cyberbullying

as “Any online or digital behavior by a person or organization that continuously spreads hateful or aggressive messages with the intention of hurting or distressing other people” The negative impacts of cyberbullying on its victims can be enormous, ranging from decreased academic performance to emotional anguish, humiliation, and

Trang 5

anxiety for adolescents who are the victims More importantly, it is a type of discrimination that has no place in modern digital environment Forms of

cyberbullying can vary, for instance, sending abusive text messages or emails, posting mean contents on social media, spreading of false rumors, establishing websites and hate groups against a particular member from an online group According to report on cyberbullying (Zhong et al., 2021):

There are many factors influence cyberbullying Specifically, at the personal background level, gender has a significant impact on cyberbullying and being cyberbullied In terms of personal Internet use and social network habits, students’ average daily online time has no significant correlation with cyberbullying and being cyberbullied

In a nutshell, cyberbullying on the Internet can have negative impacts on its victims’ mental health and academic performance, and it is an illegal form of discrimination that needs to be addressed right away

2.2 The situation of cyberbullying among adolescents in recent years

In recent years, cyberbullying has attracted significant attention The situation regarding online harassment in the past few years will be briefly discussed below, along with some noteworthy cases and statistics As demonstrated in the study, it is estimated that approximately 28% of adolescents worldwide claim to have

experienced racially motivated cyberbullying (Manuel, 2023) A recent report by Zhu

et al (2021) revealed that “In the past five years, the prevalence rate of cyberbullying has increased significantly As such, it is critical that researchers in low- and middle- income countries give cyberbullying among children and adolescents enough attention” Cyberbullying could appear and take many forms in a variety of ways, including isolating someone from an online group, sending mental threats, or even

physical threats from bullies via social media platforms Inspite of being toxic, online harassment 1s still a prevalent matter on digital social environments, where some people might feel helpless to report it and afraid of facing retaliation if they do A growing number of high-profile cyberbullying circumstances today that have made headlines have increased public awareness of the problem An example is the case of Harry Winston - a soccer player Five of Harry's teammates messaged him, saying he did not know how to play the game and holding him responsible for the team's defeat

He was so scared on many levels that he could not tell his parents and coach, so he put

up with the bullying for the whole soccer season The following season, he did not play soccer ever again Another example of this is the situation of Alma Miller Ennis,

a member of the esports team, enjoyed persuading the other players against Alma, the only female player On Instagram, the entire team was friends, but Ennis convinced the majority of the group to unfriend Alma After that, Alma got upset by this and decided to give up esports Keith and Martin (2005); Willard (2005) concluded that:

Because it does not occur face-to-face, bullies are able to mete out pain without witnessing the consequences and victims often cannot stand up for themselves, even if they are so inclined In large part, it is the secretive nature of electronic bullying that helps to make it so insidious A tormentor can get into a victims’ home, harassing him or her while parents sit comfortably in the next room

To sum up, cyberbullying on social media is a demanding matter that affects many teenagers Cyberbullying has gained increasing interest in recent years due to high- profile situations and public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives among adolescents to avoid and respond to incidents of online violence

2.3 The causes of cyberbullying among adolescents on the Internet today Cyberbullying stays one of the most common issues on the Internet today and it affects negatively people of all ages, particularly adolescents Despite making efforts

in order to avoid this behavior, there are several factors leading to its presence and

persistence This paper examines the root causes of cyberbullying on the Internet in recent times First of all, Popularity among friends The majority of respondents, according to the results, thought that teenage cyberbullying was a direct result of this popularity According to Wegge et al (2016), authors who encourage cyberbullying have seen a rise in perceived popularity after engaging in cyberbullying Whether through honorable or unethical means, students in higher education generally want to

be popular Students typically work hard to become popular In addition, blackmail When it comes to blackmail, most respondents would say it results in cyberbullying Approximately nearly 60% of children shifted from being victims to attackers in instances of cyberbullying and online blackmail that happened while sharing videos (Kopecky, 2016) These kids' desire for vengeance or other forms of retaliation may be the cause of this role shift College students’ relationships now involve exchanging private messages with each other about sensitive information (Kopecky, 2014) Usually, these private documents wind up in the hands of criminals, who use them as leverage to demand money from the individuals they contain Confidential documents are shared online in public places when these people refuse to comply with the demands of these malevolent actors Finally, retaliation As mentioned by Hoff and Mitchell (2009), high school students have reported that:

Romantic break-ups caused feelings of rejection and anger that festered into retaliation by cyberbullying In some cases, cyberbullying was initiated by one member of the relationship and targeted the other In other cases, the new girlfriend or boyfriend was the recipient

In short, cyberbullying today remains a major matter on the Internet, with adolescents being badly affected

2.4, The consequences of cyberbullying among adolescents on the Internet today

Cyberbullying on the Internet can have devastating and long-lasting consequences on adolescents Though there is a growing number of high-profile cyberbullying situations today, people still underestimate cyberbullying simply because they think

it would only take place online and not in person This paper explores the effects of cyberbullying on adolescents on the Internet Firstly, having trouble gaining and losing friends The majority of respondents disagreed that it is harder to make frends because of cyberbullying The minority of agreements was noteworthy (49.1%), though Once again, the majority of participants expressed disagreement with the assertion that friendships are lost as a result of cyberbullying According to research

by Foody et al (2019), those who engaged in cyberbullying reported having worse friendships than those who did not This is explained by the fact that those who participate in cyberbullying sometimes exhibit rudeness and skepticism These qualities make it difficult to form wholesome friendships Moreover, poor self-worth This observation runs counter to SNle’ glovy and Cerny's (2011) research

Cyberbullying lowers victims’ self-esteem, which in turn affects the victims' sel f- esteem, a portion of respondents agree that cyberbullying can result in a decrease in self-esteem (34.1%), the majority have a different opinion This finding is explained

by Ghanaians' general indifference to harassment The lower effect of cyberbullying in this study when compared to the effects previously noted in the literature may be caused by this mindset In contrast, a sizable minority may be caused by greater awareness of cyberbullying Furthermore, a rise in the amount of stress The majority

Trang 9

of participants disapproved of the claim that cyberbullying causes more stress Stll, Monteagudo et al (2020) discovered that “Of the students who reported experiencing cyberbullying, 72.2% reported having high levels of emotional disorder, 68.1% had high levels of distress, and 75.2% had high levels of pressure.” Lastly, having trouble believing people The S“le’ glova and Cerna (2011) survey investigated that:

Cyberbullying experiences led to changes in the victims’ behaviour Critical impacts included lower self-esteem, loneliness and disillusionment and distrust

of people This may result from fear of repeated bullying, thus leading to victims’ preference of being lonely rather than engaging with people

To summarise, Cyberbullying has far-reaching effects, including having trouble gaining and losing friends, poor self-worth, a rise in the amount of stress, and having trouble believing people

2.5 Solutions

For better cyberbullying prevention, as well as the sake of adolescents High schools should invest in practical initiatives that foster awareness, education, and respectful digital environments Most importantly, practical initiatives should offer clear routes

on how to easily recognize and quickly avoid bullying, and should cover the administrative procedures for reporting it This paper gives efficient solutions on how

to deliberately avoid cyberbullying Similar to traditional bullying, there are several steps adolescents can take to avoid cyberbullying First and foremost, informing someone you trust Sadly, many young people feel very out of place and lost because they make assumption that social media companies, the government and schools are not doing enough to address the problem On the other hand, many teenagers believe that their parents side with them in the fight against online harassment This represents

8

Trang 10

a great responsibility for parents to continue learning Additionally, avoid involving With increments of up to 70% within the sum of bullying/hate discourse among high schoolers and children since the Covid lockdown, analysts have found non-

engagement to be one of the most ways to combat certain sorts of cyberbullying assaults Casualties of cyberbullying are frequently way better off disregarding or maintaining a strategic distance from an assault and quickly announcing the circumstance to an suitable grown-up The objective of any bully is to urge his or her casualty into outrage and affirmation of silly claims or malicious statements The best alternative for casualties is to square the bully from social media and mail accounts inside and out For numerous social media apps, such as Facebook or Instagram, blocking not as it were expels the bully from the victim’s see but moreover implies that the bully can not straightforwardly interface to the victim’s profile or indeed see posts by shared contacts that tag the casualty Last but not least, gaining knowledge

As Vogels (2022) noted:

By December 2022, almost half (46%) of all young people (ages 13 to 17) have experienced cyberbullying, and online surveys show that teachers consider cyberbullying to be a major safety issue in the classroom they currently work

in fight with As a parent, it is extremely important to know as much as possible about what your children are doing online and on smartphones Consider cybersecurity options to protect children online and take stronger measures to protect your children online

By implementing these effective solutions, adolescents can create safe, supportive and stress-free digital environments, reducing the incidence of cyberbullying, and contribute to a more equal society for all

Ill CONCLUSION
