INTRODUCTION 1-3 1.1 Backgound

Objectives

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of Body Language definitions, examining the advantages and disadvantages of students' use of body language Furthermore, this article also suggests some ways to better use body language for HUFLIT juniors communication.

Scopes

Many studies have emphasized the importance of using body language in everyday communication; how it affects and benefits student dialogues Therefore, the focus of this article for juniors at HUFLIT.

Organization

This study begins with an introduction to Body Language (What Is It? How Does

It Work?) It then goes on to present how the research is done The next chapter is devoted to the findings and discussion of the study Finally, the final chapter concludes and gives recommendations for the effective use of body language for HUFLIT juniors.

LITERATURE REVIEW 4-6 2.1 Defining Body Language

Advantage of Body Language in comunicate

The foremost, one of the greatest non-verbal languages is also a powerful tool for expressing things that cannot be expressed with words Non-verbal language expressing emotions, non-verbal communication is very important in expressing emotions Emotions like happiness, satisfaction, confidence, surprise, excitement, fatigue, stress, sadness and so on These are almost all expressed through different body and facial gestures According to Mark Bowden (2012), Truth and Lies, they may look down on what people say, but they will never underestimate people's feelings Expression of the body language becomes basic mode of non-verbal communication among people

2.2.2 Reflection of true human emotions

The non-verbal dialect is a true reflection of human emotions, clearly showing personality through gestures and actions Moreover, people can express themselves or express emotions, express ego through facial expressions Emotional expression is the individual's ability to convey emotional states through nonverbal movements and gestures, including through faces In general, non-verbal communication fundamental function in human social life about their emotions, needs, intentions, attitudes, and thoughts without the use of verbal language But behavior in the human being is sometimes a defense, a way of concealing motives and thoughts, as language can be a way of hiding peopler thoughts and preventing communication (Abraham Maslow, 2011)

Non-verbal communication is different from person to person and especially from one culture to another Additionally, non-verbal communication is an important part of how people communicate and there are differences from culture to culture Each country, each culture has its own language system that people from other cultures can hardly understand According to Lawrence Booth (2010) said that, the captains of England and Australia can scarcely trade merriments these days without a body-language master instantly declaiming on the point of their handshakes Since different countries have different cultures, it is necessary to prepare the necessary skills before a trip to a new culture with their country's unique body language to enjoy a wonderful trip.

Challenge of Body Language in communicate

Non-verbal communication is quite vague and imprecise Since in this communication, there is no use of words or language which expresses clear meaning to the receiver When the eyes say one thing, and the tongue another, a practiced man relies on the language of the first (Ralph Waldo Emerson, 2011) No dictionary can accurately classify, their meaning varies not only by culture and context but by the degree of intention While watching someone’s eyes, people may miss something significant in a hand gesture Everything is happening at once and therefore it may be confusing to try to keep up with everything Most of us simply do not do so, at least not consciously.

Non-verbal communication does not follow any rules, formality or structure like other communication Most of the cases, people unconsciously and habitually engaged in non-verbal communication by moving the various parts of the body The most important thing in communication is hearing what is not said (Peter F Drucker,2011) Since it uses gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, touch, sign, sound, paralanguage, etc.

Non-verbal communication is learned in childhood, passed on to they by themselve parents and by others they associate with a few other gestures seem common The time to stop talking is when the other person nods his head affirmatively, but says nothing (Henry S Haskins, 2011) Evidence shows that people of all cultures smile when they are happy and frown when they are unhappy Most nonverbal symbols, hotheyver, seem to be even disconnected from any “essential meaning" than verbal symbols Gestures that are considered positive in one culture, like the gesture of a thumb in the United States can be considered obscene in another It cannot be used everywhere, it cannot be used as a public tool for communication in different cultures

In conclusion, nonverbal behavior plays an important role for the communication of states such as emotions as well as in first impressions Nonverbal communication is imbedded in a social context, which influences how expressions are perceived and interpreted This context is defined not only through the relevant cultural rules and norms but also by the social group membership of the interaction partners.

DISCUSSION 17 18 - 5.1 Research Questions

Explanation for Findings

Especially in teaching foreign languages, when mastering some common body language skills, the teacher will not only accurately read non-speech marks from students, but also know how to use non-speech language effectively in presenting, conveying and teaching foreign languages better A good lecture, creating a teacher's charisma when the teacher smoothly combines the elements of language, tone and body language (gestures, gestures, eyes, smiles and so on) During the lecture, the teacher's eyes are also responsible for conveying information and expressing their feelings and enthusiasm, affecting and spreading to the listener The teacher can feel the soul of the sermon from his eyes and then linger in their minds When teachers know how to apply non-language communication to the lecture, it is easy for teachers to create effective lessons and achieve the desired successes However, the basic language can only be effective when you use them properly and not too applicable In the process of communication, we often tend not to be self-aware of those behaviors , but the opposite person is very aware and evaluates the meaning of even the smallest ones Moreover, body language is not as clear and accurate as the use of words, because each person will have a different way of explaining body behavior Therefore, in order to avoid some erroneous misunderstandings in the process of communication, you should avoid using some misleading behaviors and gestures.

Limitations

Although the research has reached its aim, there were still some unavoidable limitations and shortcomings Firstly, the research was conducted a short period of time(a week) Secondly, the population of participants is small, only 100 junior students from Foreign Languages Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology Thus, it may not represent the majority of students in HUFLIT Thirdly, the junior students' overloaded work, to some extent, might affect the result of the research.

RECOMMENDATION 19 20 - 6.1 Recommendation for educator

Communication is a process of information exchange, psychological contact, mutual understanding, mutual impact, and influence and often takes place in life When it comes to communication, many people think that speech is the most important and effective tool and means of human beings However, this is not necessarily true when many studies show that body language accounts for up to 40% of the success of a conversation Expressing language is a common language used in everyday communication Body language plays a huge role in communication efficiency Body language enriches spoken language and communication To help college students master the skills of using body language while communicating this report brings the benefits and challenges of using body language in communication at HUFLIT Then researcher proposed several solutions to minimize the disadvantages of using body language among HUFLIT students To carry out this research, researchers selected 100 junior students from the Foreign Languages Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology to carry out the survey In the questionnaire, the researcher gave 8 closed questions and 2 open questions for participants to give some suggestions on the use of body language in student communication at HUFLIT The researcher collected questionnaires from the students for a week The findings of this study point to the use of body language in communication as well as in learning English as a useful communication tool in HUFLIT the use of body language in communication has more benefits than challenges Therefore, it is considered an excellent method to create creativity as well as success for communication In addition, it is necessary to study more deeply the use of body language in the teaching of foreign languages so that we have better methods as well as better education The results showed that the use of body language in communication as well as in the teaching of foreign languages brings many benefits to faculty and students

CHAPTER 6: RECOMMENDATION 19 20- 6.1 Recommendation for educator 19

Communication is incredibly vital for individuals to act with one another Communication includes verbal communication and nonverbal communication In our everyday lives, the type of communication people use the most is non-verbal communication But non-verbal communication is as important as verbal communication because, without non-verbal communication and verbal communication, life will be very boring After all, people cannot express our feeling and think through gestures, words, and other Non-verbal language is one of the most important aspects of everyday communication A steady handshake, a slight nod, or eye movement can portray a variety of emotions without uttering a single word Body language is something that develops over time in response to human social needs Scientists still studying what gestures developed and what was suggested Many of them can be studied from protozoa that use gestures to communicate Verbal communication can repeat messages, as opposed to words, reinforce claims, replaces the meaning of sentences, and complements the meaning of words Since non-verbal communication can emphasize people's points of view or contradict them, it is important to keep body language in sync with people's emotions Any sign of a conflict between human body language and words could make us appear unreliable and deceptive Remember body language is control the conversation, pays attention to dictate, and conveys the right message without saying a word According to Mark Bowden (2010), Winning Body Language, Control the discussion, command consideration, and pass on the proper message without saying a word, feelings people have about they and themself work are fundamentally based upon what is communicated by what people see they do, and not from what they think and say and - The figure illustrates just how significant body language can be when people communicate their feelings Albert Mehrabian’s work on spoken communication led to the conclusions outlined in the pie chart-figures which are widely quoted in recruitment and business contexts It might be a surprise to see that the words people speak only account for 7 percent of the meaning of people's message Much more important is the tone of people's voice such as the pauses and peopler body language, including peopler facial expressions, peopler gestures, and posture However many authors have found fault with these conclusions, and Mehrabian himself has explained that this and other equations regarding the relative importance of verbal and nonverbal messages people derived from experiments dealing with communications of feelings and attitudes Unless a communicator is talking about their feelings or attitudes, these equations are not applicable So it is clear that these figures will not apply in every work situation involving communication, but if feelings or attitudes are involved, such as in a meeting where people feel strongly about a particular issue, they are worth taking into account They also help to raise our awareness of the potential significance of non-verbal cues While the percentages may not always be so striking, it is important to take that aspect of our communication seriously In the workplace, understanding non-verbal communication will help people to better manage and understand the feelings of people colleagues, and customers Familiar rising people self with some of the signals or cues people might encounter, will be a helpful process Non-verbal cues can also contribute to hasty judgments about others Being aware of how people react to someone’s clothing, gestures or other non-verbal cues will help people to focus on the message being delivered rather than being distracted by an inappropriate outfit or lack of eye contact

The term body language means the movements people use and the facial expressions people have smiling or frowning, the way people sit or stand, the way people touch or look at someone, the distance people stand from another person Some psychologists say that more than 60 percent of our communication is done through body language People do it without thinking, or without ever having been specifically taught what the gestures or expressions mean The problem is that visual communication may be a little totally different in every culture and this could usually cause some issues with communication Put simply, body language is the unspoken element of communication that people use to reveal their true feelings and emotions It is the relaxed face expression that breaks out into a real smile – with mouth upturned and eyes wrinkled It can be a tilt of the head that shows people's listening, sitting or standing upright to convey interest, or directing attention with hand gestures It can also be taking care to avoid a defensive, arms-crossed posture, or restlessly tapping people's feet According to Deborah Bull, Body language is a very powerful tool People had body language before people had speech, and apparently, 80 percent of what people understand in a conversation is read through the body, not the words

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of Body Language definitions, examining the advantages and disadvantages of students' use of body language Furthermore, this article also suggests some ways to better use body language for HUFLIT juniors communication

Many studies have emphasized the importance of using body language in everyday communication; how it affects and benefits student dialogues Therefore, the focus of this article for juniors at HUFLIT

This study begins with an introduction to Body Language (What Is It? How Does

It Work?) It then goes on to present how the research is done The next chapter is devoted to the findings and discussion of the study Finally, the final chapter concludes and gives recommendations for the effective use of body language for HUFLIT juniors

Body language is a form of non-verbal communication Body language is about using behaviour to communicate Both people and animals use this form of communication It is therefore different from communicating using sign language, for example communication using sign language is intentional, body language is not The common definition are:

Body language is a sort of nonverbal communication in which bodily actions are utilized to express or transmit information rather than words Facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch, and the utilization of space are examples of such behavior Although both animals and humans have body language, this article concentrates on human body language interpretations Kinesics is another term for it Despite the fact that body language is a vital aspect of communication, the majority of it goes undetected (Wikipedia, 2020)

As described above, there are many different types of non-verbal or body language communication and different ways of expressing them

2.2 Advantage of Body Language in comunicate

The foremost, one of the greatest non-verbal languages is also a powerful tool for expressing things that cannot be expressed with words Non-verbal language expressing emotions, non-verbal communication is very important in expressing emotions Emotions like happiness, satisfaction, confidence, surprise, excitement, fatigue, stress, sadness and so on These are almost all expressed through different body and facial gestures According to Mark Bowden (2012), Truth and Lies, they may look down on what people say, but they will never underestimate people's feelings Expression of the body language becomes basic mode of non-verbal communication among people
