Drawingcloseupofface Figure 1: Image offace from a magazine cut out used as a reference for the portrait. I decided to create a sketch of the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez for this tutorial. The medium I used was pencil- HB, 2B, 3B, 4B. I chose to draw this image reference because of the eyes shown have a lot of detail as well as the composition is tilted slightly to one side. Figure 2: the start of sketch. Firstly I drew a border around to have open space and make it look professional. Then I used a HB pencil and decided to create a closeupof her face. Roughly proportion lines of the composition of the head and drew light outlines of the facial features-eyes, brows, nose, mouth and part of glasses. Figure 3: Drawing the detail of the eyes and eye brows. As you see in this image, I have completed the eyes and the eye brows by using B, 2B and 3B(for the darker tonal areas of the eye lashes and the inside the eyes to make them as realistic as possible.) I started with the inside of the eyes from dark then light and pressed lightly with the pencil, and created a shadow as in the reference (figure 1) underneath the eye lash. I used a bold outline around the eyes and used a curve motion below the eye. Then I used 2B pencil which was sharpen and did dark strokes with my pencil to create the lashes to make them bold and stand out. I drew in the same direction moving my hand and pencil right and darken the eye lid and outside and used a bold outline to represent the eye lid and pressed harder with an sharpen 3B pencil to create contrast near the eye brow and the right eye after softly using HB pencil below the eye in a left to right motion. Then I started to work on the eye brows by creating small pencil strokes with a 2B pencils to add texture and shape then reworked them to become darker in areas. I used small cross hatch related strokes and pressed harder to get a darker tone (at the end). Afterwards, I decided to continue with the left side of the face by making it darker in shade because it is the darkest area in the sketch. I used the same method as before with the eye and lightly shaded the white space in the eyes. Tips on how to draw from image reference. 1. Always sharpen your pencils that you plan to use. 2. Use any method or technique you can think of to make it look realistic as possible- i.e cross hatch, rough looking, smooth (these are just a few examples.) 3. Don't rush the sketch or it won't look right. 4. Use any medium-pencil, acrylic, charcoal, watercolour or pastel. 5. Practice makes perfect. Figure 4:Continue of shading the face and nose of sketch. I started to create the contrast of the nose and of the cheeks and added detail to the nose by using an 4B pencil for dark areas where there is shadow at the bottom and above the top lip. I lightly pressed the HB pencil for the contrast and continued using the 4B pencil to add gradient. I used a bold dark outline to represent the nose. As you see, I used long pencil strokes for the right side of cheek and added layers to make it darker and pressing harder with my pencil. On the left side of the face I used the 3B pencil and did short vertical and horizontal strokes to create texture and a dark bold outline to sharpen the head's outline. I used the cross hatch technique for the part of the forehead. Figure 5:The final sketch that I have completed over five hours. The scanner quality isn't as good as it has become lighter in contrast than the original piece of art work. The original sketch is slightly darker than the scanned image. I have done the lips and inside the mouth I used 3B and 4B pencils to create the lips and left the outline slightly below the top lip to add shape to the mouth and a shiny effect almost like in the image reference and I have use an HB pencil to add a light contrast to the teeth. On the part of bottom lip I decided to have a dark outline then make it become lighter in tone and left a few areas white as reflection from a light source on to the bottom lip. I lightly shaded the left side of bottom lip where there was white spots. With the background I used a 4B pencil and have a black background. For the hair I used curve pencil strokes to create shape. . Drawing close up of face Figure 1: Image of face from a magazine cut out used as a reference for the portrait.
