Figure 1 | Summary of Malaysia’s Monthly Trade in Malaysia

Source: Department of Statistics, Malaysia (2022) Highlights: ® Exports from Malaysia reached a new high three years ahead of the 12th Plan objective © The biggest trading partners of Malaysia saw historic highs in exports ¢ Double-digit growth was observed in exports to markets included by the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) ¢ Manufacturing, agricultural, and mining exports all hit record highs.

The main reasons for export expansion are:

Increased demand from outside: Following the COVID-19 epidemic, the demand for products and services from Malaysia's commercial partners increased as the world economy recovered

Prices for commodities rose sharply: The high price of crude oil caused a substantial spike in commodity prices, particularly for Malaysia's principal exports, liquefied natural gas (LNG), palm oil, and crude oil

1.2.2 Chemical Ingredients Industry in Malaysia

Malaysia's chemical and chemical product industries benefit from the nation's abundance of natural resources The main products of this industry, which contributes significantly to the manufacturing sector, are petrochemicals and oleochemicals Chemicals and chemical products are frequently utilized as raw materials in the production of a wide range of finished goods, including plastics, construction materials, oil and gas, electrical and electronics, and agricultural products

Malaysia is a major exporter of chemicals, with its biggest export products by value in 2022 being electronic integrated circuits and micro-assemblies, refined petroleum oils, palm oil, petroleum gases, and solar power diodes or semiconductors Combined, these major exports accounted for well over two-fifths (44.2%) of overall export sales from Malaysia

Key exported chemical ingredients: ¢ Plasticizers: These are used to make plastics more flexible and durable ¢ Solvents: Used to dissolve other substances ¢ Inorganic chemicals: Used in a wide range of industrial applications, including fertilizers, pigments, and pharmaceuticals ¢ Organic chemicals: Used in a wide range of industrial applications, including pesticides, herbicides, and dyes. ¢ Fine chemicals: High-purity chemicals are used in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, and cosmetics ¢ Petrochemicals: Derived from petroleum and natural gas, used in producing plastics, synthetic fibers, and other products

Top export destinations for chemical ingredients from Malaysia: ¢ China: 20.5% of total exports ¢ Singapore: 18.3% ¢ Japan: 11.2% ¢ Vietnam: 10.7% ¢ United States: 8.2%

Reasons Vietnam 1mports Malaysian chemical IngredIenfs

In today's dynamic business landscape, companies are constantly seeking new opportunities to expand their reach, optimize costs, and gain a competitive edge For Brenntag Vietnam Co., Ltd., a leading distributor of chemicals and ingredients in Vietnam, finding a suitable market to import these essential materials to present a strategic opportunity is necessary Malaysia's ingredients market is one of the suitable suppliers with Vietnam

Importing from Malaysia helps Brenntag with cost optimization As a major producer of chemicals, with a favorable location, Malaysia has competitive prices and economies of scale, allowing Brenntag to achieve lower procurement costs compared to other sources This cost advantage translates directly into increased profitability and enhanced competitiveness in the Vietnamese market Moreover, by sourcing chemicals from Malaysia, Brenntag mitigates dependence on single suppliers and minimizes the impact of disruptions in other countries This diversification ensures a steady and reliable supply of essential ingredients, fostering long-term stability and growth

The report is based on the data and information that our team has collected and analyzed from various sources, such as internal databases, external market reports, customer feedback, and supplier contracts The report also uses tables, charts, graphs, and diagrams to illustrate the data and information This report is divided into three main parts:

1.1 Overview of The Export-Import Industry in Vietnam

1.1.1 Overview of Vietnam's Export-Import Industry

In November 2023, the total import and export turnover of goods was estimated at 60.88 billion USD, up 5.9% over the same period last year Overall, for the first 11 months of 2023, the total import and export turnover of goods is estimated to reach 619.17 billion USD, down 8.3% over the same period last year The trade balance of goods in the 11 months of 2023 is estimated at a trade surplus of 25.83 billion USD Regarding the export of goods, the export turnover of goods in November 2023 is estimated to reach 31.08 billion USD, up 6.7% over the same period last year Of which, the domestic economic sector reached 8.49 billion USD, an increase of 13.5%; The foreign-invested sector (including crude oil) reached 22.59 billion USD, an increase of 4.4% This is a very positive bright spot when the growth rate of the domestic business sector is 3 times higher than the foreign-invested sector

Regarding import of goods, import turnover of goods in November 2023 is estimated to reach 29.8 billion USD, up 1% compared to the previous month Of which, the domestic economic sector reached 10.6 billion USD, down 0.4%; The foreign investment sector reached 19.2 billion USD, an increase of 1.7% However, for the first

11 months of 2023, the import turnover of goods is estimated to reach 296.67 billion USD, down 10.7% over the same period last year, of which the domestic economic sector reached 105.94 billion USD, decreased 8.8%; The foreign-invested sector reached 190.73 billion USD, decreased 11.7%

Import turnover of raw materials for production continues to increase In the first

11 months of 2023, there will be 43 imported items worth over | billion USD, accounting for 92.2% of total import turnover (there are 03 imported items worth over 10 billion USD, accounting for 43.3%) Of which electronics, computers and components reached 79.2 billion USD, an increase of 4.1%; Western medicine reached 3.3 billion USD, up 7.3%; cashew nuts reached 3 billion USD, up 17.6%; electric wires and cables reached 2.3 billion USD, an increase of 4.9%; Other base metal products reached 2.1 billion USD, up 11.1%; Other products from oil reached 1.6 billion USD, up 13.1%; glass and glass products reached 1.5 billion USD, an increase of 4.9%; liquefied petroleum gas reached 1.5 billion USD, up 2.7%

Because imports decreased more strongly than exports (exports decreased by 5.9%, imports decreased by 10.7%), Vietnam's trade balance in 11 months continued to have a trade surplus of 25.83 billion USD (same period) Last year's trade surplus was 10.3 billion USD Of which, the trade surplus belongs to the foreign-invested sector (including crude oil) with a trade surplus of 45.82 billion USD The domestic economic sector had a trade deficit of 19.99 billion USD

1.1.2 Chemical Ingredients Industry in Vietnam

Basic chemicals are an important product group in the product structure of the chemical industry Basic chemical products are considered starting matenals for the production of many other chemical products and are used directly in several other industries

In Vietnam, the situation of chemical production im general and basic chemicals in particular is in the process of development Vietnam's basic chemical production mainly focuses on products of inorganic origin Vietnam's basic organic chemical products initially also have some products with a capacity scale that is small because the domestic chemical industry is in its development stage However, it must also be acknowledged that chemical production in our country today in general is not yet developed strongly enough and cannot meet the production needs of the chemical industry as well as other domestic industries

Chemicals are recognized as being in the group of imported raw matenals with high turnover from the beginning of 2022 until now to serve many key manufacturing and export industries According to the 2020 Import-Export Report, although chemical import expenditure decreased slightly by 2.2% compared to 2019, it still amounted to 5.017 billion USD Thus, the total import value of chemicals and chemical products has exceeded 10.7 billion USD By the end of the third quarter of 2022, imports of chemical goods to Vietnam reached 13.98 billion USD, a sharp increase of 22.9% So Vietnam still has a trade deficit in chemical products to serve domestic manufacturing industries.
