Photonic crystal waveguides are considered one of the main applications of two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystals. They have received significant attention, both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, 2-D photonic crystal lasers, potentially have great practical applications in the mid-IR region due to their unique features in, for example, surface emission, circular beams, low threshold operation, miniaturization and simplicity of on-chip monolithic integration, etc. Furthermore, innovative materials and plasmonic photonic crystals have recently been the focus of intense study for different applications. The goal of this book is to provide an overview about different implementations of photonic crystals. This book is structured into three main sections: 1. Photonic crystal laser and photonic crystal characterization. The topics discussed in this section are oriented on different photonic crystal properties and configurations. In particular GaN-based 2-D photonics crystal, photonic microcavity vertical cavity surface emitting laser, nonlinear coupled cavity waveguides, double negative materials and semiconductor lasers are discussed. 2. Innovative Materials and Systems. This section introduces innovative materials and systems such as biosensing system for aqueous environment by means of photonic crystal fibre, nonlinear and multi channel systems, silicon and chalcogenide photonic crystals, and spectroscopy systems. The goal of this section is to show the broad range of applications of photonic crystal systems. 3. Photonic crystal waveguides and plasmonics. Different kind of photonic crystal layouts are studied in this section. Issues such as polarization behaviour, label- free optical biosensing, and plasmonics are discussed in order to provide a complete overview concerning photonic crystal waveguiding properties.  Dr. Eng.
