CHAPTER 2: ASSIGNED TASKS AND METHODOLOGIES
2.1 Assigned tasks
2.1.1 Translating emails and documents
While I was working at GOLDEN.RATIO Trading - Construction - Architecture Co., Ltd, I was
closely supervised by Mr Pham Ba Thong — Head of the Administration Department — who guided me through the procedures of translating an e-mail or a contract Working here at GOLDEN.RATIO
Trading - Construction - Architecture Co., Ltd allowed me to enhance my translation skills, and one of
my main responsibilities as an intern translator here was to translate e-mails received from and sent to customers, as well as some contracts I was mainly responsible for translating English-to- Vietnamese e- mails, but I also assisted my co-workers with printing papers; sometimes I also helped them with typing documents
Trang 8My supervisor usually gave me around 15-20 minutes to translate an email from English to Vietnamese, and 30 minutes to translate an email from Vietnamese to English In terms of translating
contracts, I would have more time, often a day or two It is important for me to find out the meanings of
those terms in the contract and pay close attention to small details to ensure the quality of the translation
I mostly dealt with inquiry emails, in which clients asked if the products were still available or about their quality and price I also had to deal with quotation emails, where my company would give cost estimates for our customers’ purchases or respond to customers’ requests for quotation Newsletter emails were another type of email that my supervisor required me to translate into English We would usually send emails to notify our customers of our new line of product or discount coupons on special occasions and updates about our products through this type of email These emails are useful because they could help our offerings come to our customers’ minds whenever they consider buying a piece of furniture, hence higher financial gains for our company
As for contracts, I would often translate contracts with shipping companies One time, I was asked to translate a contract with a shipping company called Minh Chau Shipping Company for faster delivery
and cost estimates
2.1.2 Interpreting in meetings
It was not part of my job description, but there was one time I had a chance to be an interpreter in a meeting between my company’s representatives and those of a small advertising agency in Ho Chi Minh City I sat between the two parties, listened to one side and quickly noted down what they just said and translated that into English or Vietnamese to the other party The meeting lasted for about an hour Although I felt stressed throughout that time, I knew how important I was in that meeting I have fulfilled my responsibility as an interpreter, which was helping the two parties fully understand each
other and make the final deal
Trang 92.2 Methods of implementation
2.2.1 Communicative Translation
I was instructed to use this method by no other than my supervisor — Mr Thong Because most emails
sent to and from our customers do not contain idioms, slangs, or word play, so I was permitted to make certain adjustments to the source text to make the target text more easily comprehensible without affecting the original meaning
It was essential for me to go through the assigned e-mail or contract in order to have a thorough understanding of what it was about in the first step of the process Mr Thong also advised that I note down a few main ideas mentioned in the document, as doing so would ensure that I would not miss any important information after going on to the next step
Moving on to the second step, it was important to me to pay very close attention to several terms related to architecture and building industry Since I was not familiar with these fields, I got stuck at some terms; but when I researched those specialized terms on the Internet, I found it easier to translate them At the same time, I tried not to translate them too rigidly as to help the readers understand the
translation better
Finally, after I finished my draft, I would send it to my supervisor for editing Mr Thong would give
me feedback on my work and, in some cases, ask me to translate the whole document again if I made too many mistakes, such as wrong word choices or grammar errors
2.2.2 Consecutive Interpretation
While I studied at Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking, I learned about this method but did not have any hands-on experience through that time However, working here at GOLDEN.RATIO Trading
- Construction - Architecture Co., Ltd gave me a chance to apply this method to practice as an interpreter The first thing I would usually do before the meeting was having a small chat with two
4
Trang 10parties to ask them to pause after every one or two sentences in the meeting Doing this would make sure that I could have enough time to translate them from English to Vietnamese, and vice versa At the same time, I would also ask them for their presentation slides or notes that they might have used in the meeting so that I could research the terms and look up some unfamiliar words they would use in the meeting
Trang 11CHAPTER 3: INTERNSHIP RESULTS
3.1 Accomplishments during a three-month internship
3.1.1 Consolidated theoretical knowledge
I learned a lot as an intern translator at GOLDEN.RATIO Trading - Construction - Architecture Co., Ltd Here, they gave me a chance to enhance and practice my English every day and every time in an English and Vietnamese speaking environment I used my English regularly by answering and replying
to my customers’ phones and emails, and most importantly, translating and interpreting emails and contracts, which really helped me improve 4 main skills in English Besides, I also acquired a great number of new words in the architecture and building industry Since I currently have no intention to
work in the furniture manufacturing sector in the near future, I have not really thought about how this
will help me However, I am always happy and willing to learn new things and enrich knowledge as much as possible
I remember there was one time I made a mistake when my company reached an agreement with a big client in China on a new line of product — Bedside Tables — usually translates as “tu dau giwong”, Unfortunately, I translated the term “tu dau giuong” as “table bed” in my first draft After that, I sent it
to my supervisor — Mr Thong and fortunately he noticed my mistake and told me to change it to
“bedside table” After this, I learned the hard way that I had to be extremely careful when translating
such specific terms by paying more attention to small details and double-checking whenever I finished translating my work so as to ensure the quality of the translation
3.1.2 Acquired skills and experience during the internship
As an intern translator at Thai Binh Duong IDCD Co., Ltd., there is no doubt that my translation skills have improved remarkably I learned how to adapt style, tones, and cultural elements accurately to
target text without changing the original meaning Also, understanding vocabularies and grammars
