TIKTOK AS AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING MEDIA
Abstract Learning is no longer too difficult for students nowadays, especially since the world has just experienced the Covid-19 pandemic The advancement of technology has solved problems in both education and learning One of the popular media application platforms is Tiktok The purpose of this study is to describe students’ perceptions of using the TikTok application to learn English Participants in this study are students of universities in Ho Chi Minh City 300 students from universities were selected to participate in the study The researcher used a simple random sampling strategy, and the quantitative correlational research method was used in this study During the data collection process, the researcher used a questionnaire
to enquire about students’ perceptions of the Tiktok application for English learning The results show that students positively perceive using TiKTok to learn English

1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Statement of the problem
English is a widely used global language that is essential in both work and daily life Students
in Vietnam must obtain English certificates in order to graduate and find a suitable job Students frequently regard learning English as a foreign language challenge Because some students have difficulty reading and comprehending materials written in English At the same time, students have limited time in class to learn English, and they are still not encouraged to practice English outside of class in order to become acquainted with the language (Al Nakhalah, 2016) Furthermore, students have so many subjects at school that they cannot allocate time or focus on their main major In fact, mastering English requires a significant amount of time and effort As a result, there are numerous opportunities for students to improve their English skills
Especially with the development of technology today, students can go through social networks to access and find any information they want to support the learning process The popularization of mobile devices provides incredible chances for diverse social media

resource to learn and understand materials related to their school lessons, as well as to improve their English skills (Nurjannah et al., 2021)
One of the most popular social media is TikTok It is a video platform with a social media network TikTok has a variety of content and features (Ferstephanie & Pratiwi,2021) TikTok is a video-sharing app that allows users to livestream and upload short videos There
about improving English There are now numerous accounts dedicated to discussing English, including @blackscreenenglish, @datio89, @nghielts, and others TikTok can provide an infinite amount of Knowledge, allowing users to use it at any time and from any location As
a result, students can improve their English skills by watching short videos on TikTok
without feeling rushed or stressed
Learning English has become increasingly difficult in recent years due to the influence of Covid-19 TikTok, as a useful solution, is becoming increasingly important as a support tool
in students’ English improvement Furthermore, in the Ho Chi Minh City environment, students’ perspectives on the TikTok application as a means of learning English have not been clarified As a result, the goal of this study is to clarify university students’ perceptions
of using TikTok to learn English in Ho Chi Minh City
The researcher searched a wide range of relevant databases, including Google Scholar, Web
of Science, and Scopus The researcher conducted a literature review to learn about students’ perceptions by using TikTok as an English language learning media
Definition of TikTok and Students’ Perception
According to Pratiwi et al., (2021) TikTok is a social media that is used as a learning medium because it has many users, complete features and a variety of content in it TikTok is a social media network on a video platform introduced by Zhang Yiming in 2016 and owned by ByteDance This application used to have the name Douyin which was very explosive in China Because it is very popular, Douyin has expanded to various countries with a new name, namely TikTok It now has expanded features such as live streaming and trading as e- commerce platforms, in addition to hosting many short videos of users TikTok features a

Trang 5wide range of video genres, including dance, comedy, news, and education, with videos ranging in length from 15 seconds to 3 minutes Each person can have different creativity in creating useful videos Students can express themselves creatively through short videos and other mediums using the TikTok app As a result, it is thought to be capable of assisting students in improving their English language skills (Wiranda & Syafryadin, 2023)
TikTok is an appropriate application for research because it has a large user base and is widely popular today Because it is appropriate for all ages and they enjoy watching and listening to learning videos on TikTok Because of the short duration of their videos, they are sometimes divided into several parts, making viewers more curious to learn and watch more This does not dampen students’ enthusiasm for continuing to learn through TikTok learning

According to Novitasari & Ainul Addinna (2022), TikTok gives them the opportunity to improve their English skills Learning English on TikTok is enjoyable and stress-free, and they can enjoy learning more As a result, it can boost their learning motivation TikTok also allows students to be able to learn independently Students also have the perception that TikTok Application provides grammar insights that will boost their confidence when speaking (Nasichah, A H, 2023)
According to Herlisya and Wiratno (2022), using the TikTok app in learning English can help students improve their speaking skills Perangin-angin, et.al., (2021) argue that TikTok media can also improve students’s English listening skills Rahmawanti (2021) and
Ubaedillah, et.al (2021) also stated that TikTok is the second most popular social media platform for students learning English, and it is also used by English teachers in distance learning
TikTok, like other learning mediums, has advantages and disadvantages in terms of assisting students in improving their English Each student has a unique perspective on using TikTok
to learn English As a result, the purpose of this study was to determine whether students believe TikTok can help them learn English on their own and how they learn from the app According to Robbins (Lele, 2019), perception is the process by which individuals organise and interpret their sensory experiences in order to derive meaning from them Students’ perceptions can provide information or an overview of how they use TikTok to learn, as well

Previous related the study
The researcher uses several previous similar studies as a reference Anggi E Pratiwi's study titled "Utilizing the TikTok Application as a Media for Learning English Pronunciation” According to the findings, students had some difficulty imitating the pronunciation in the TikTok video This study is focused on improving vocabulary and pronunciation, and the subjects are students of the school The subjects in this study were university students The similarities between this study and the current one are that both look at TikTok videos to learn English The study focuses on the benefits of using the TikTok app to learn English, whereas the research that will be conducted focuses on students' perceptions of learning English using the TikTok app
Based on Research Results Risky entitled " Tikio (TikTok Application Educational Video) Based on Character Education of Newton's Laws Concepts Preferred to Learning for Generation Z” It is stated that TikTok learning videos are extremely beneficial for students
to watch This previous study, like this one, discusses the use of TikTok videos for learning
However, previous research did not concentrate on a single topic Based on this, the researcher is interested in conducting research entitled “Students’ Perception by using TikTok as an English language learning media” with the aim of knowing students' perception
of using TikTok videos for learning English
1.3 Research Question
This study is conducted in an attempt to find the answer to the following research question
“What do HCMC University students’s think about applying TikTok as a media learning English?”

This research result is critical for university students in Ho Chi Minh City to have a clearer and more positive awareness of learning English through the Tiktok application, allowing students to become more confident in using the English language Furthermore, the TikTok Application's interactiveness is expected to increase interest in the English learning experience and provide fascinating support for language learning This study teaches readers how to use TikTok as a miniature social network to improve their English skills
2 METHODS
2.1 Participants and methods of selection (sampling strategies)
The subject of the research is 300 students, including freshmen to seniors at HCM
Universities
The researcher used a Simple Random Sampling Strategy, and the participants were divided into groups based on their school year (1,2,3,4) and major (non-English major, English Linguistic)
2.2 Instruments
The researcher used a cross-sectional survey to collect data for this study, which used a quantitative approach to describe and explain students’ perceptions of using TikTok as an English language learning media It will be conducted with a questionnaire replicated from Novitasari, N., & Addinna, A (2022) The study's questionnaire, titled "Students' Perceptions
of TikTok as an English language learning media," is divided into two parts The first section contains personal information such as academic year, major and basic information The second section includes 12 questions divided into three questionnaires that survey students’ perceptions toward using TikTok to learn English The 12 questions using the Guttman scale
include “Yes” and “No” responses The first table will survey students who believe their
English skills have improved as a result of their TikTok learning Students were asked about their feelings on using TikTok to learn English in the second panel In the final questionnaire, students were asked about the advantages they discovered when using TikTok to learn
English The data collected from the questionnaire will be examined using SPSS and MS

To obtain permission to conduct the research, the researcher will first send a letter of authorization to the head professor at universities in HCM City
After being approved to conduct, the researcher will design a Google Form for the questionnaire, which will be distributed to participants via Google Forms The Google Form format was chosen for this study because it is simple to use online and has a strict privacy policy It can also summarise key information for the researcher's convenience The Google form link will be distributed online via social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Zalo, and so on If the Google Form does not generate enough responses, the researcher will actively distribute printed copies to students in order to reach all 300 participants These two ways of collecting data will introduce some limitations because the researcher has no control over the accuracy of the students’ answers
3 ANALYSIS OF DATA
Data will be sorted by research question and objective prior to analysis After students complete the Google Form, the questionnaire data will be generated and described in two parts The first section will display the demographic data of the participants in two pie charts (academic year, major) to show the percentage of each group of participants Students’ feelings will be presented in three tables, indicating 3 different sections: English skills improved by learning TikTok, Students’ feelings when using TikTok to learn English, and Benefits discovered by students when using TikTok to learn English
The survey interval data will be interpreted using mode scores The tools for the analysis will
be the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and MS Exel The information was
represented in the final tables to make it easier to understand and analyze The questionnaire's questions are all presented as affirmative sentences about using TiKTok to learn English If the respondent agrees with the statement, the perception given is positive; if the respondent disagrees with the statement, the perception given is negative The results will then be tested and interpreted
