PART 1 LUNENBURG INTRODUCTION 1.1 History

Lunenburg is the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America Established in 1753, it has retained its original layout and overall appearance, based on a rectangular grid pattern drawn up in the home country The mhabitants have managed to safeguard the city's identity throughout the centuries by preserving the wooden architecture of the houses, some of which date from the 18th century (Nova Scotia, 1995)

In 1753, the British government settled 1,453 “foreign Protestants” in Lunenburg The settlers were recruited from southwestern Germany and the Montbéliard district of France and Switzerland These mostly German-speaking people were intended to help counter the French and Catholic presence in Nova Scotia The settlement was named for the royal house of Brunswick-Liineburg, where King George I of England came from Each settler was granted a free town-and-garden lot and farm acreage in the county The town’s grid- like plan murored that of Halifax

Trang 8

Despite initial hardships, by the late 18th century Lunenburg supplied Halifax with many agricultural products Lunenburgers had also entered the offshore fishery They first fished off the Labrador coast In the late 1860s, with the introduction of new trawling techniques, the town’s schooner fleet turned to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and the Western Bank, southwest of Sable Island The “Lunenburg cure” of dried cod found steady markets in the West Indies, particularly Puerto Rico

“A boom of splendid proportions” (Lunenburg Progress, 1888) did not persist The fish export trade became centralized in Halifax, where fast steamships left directly for the West Indies and US markets Moreover, a preference appeared for fresh instead of dried fish Local entrepreneurs, especially the Smith and Zwicker families, made adjustments

to recapture lost trade Beginning in the late 1920s, cold-storage equipment, processing plants and diesel-powered trawlers replaced cod-drying flakes and traditional schooners (L.D McCann,2022)

Trang 13

We’re more than just music performances! We showcase music and dance from a wide range of cultures Canadian and International artists are featured in educational workshops and pre-festival conferences These work to promote the preservation of traditional folk music through an emphasis on acoustic instrumentation and A cappella singing We also place a special focus on the next generation of Folk artists, with scholarships and Young Folks concerts, where we get to show off some of our amazing local youth in action

Our audiences are attentive, not rowdy - they love music more than anything and faithfully return each year! Guests are invited to participate and interact with the artists so get your cameras ready; you'll have plenty of photo ops!

Our main venues are all alcohol-free, providing a comfortable all-ages environment for

concert- goers

Over the years we’ve presented hundreds of musicians from across Canada, The United States, and beyond, and we’ve made a name as one of this country’s leading music festivals Our fans consistently tell us they come to our festival to see their favourite musicians, but leave having discovered new “musical addictions” Performers love us too They tell us that our audiences are gracious and fully engaged - quite a compliment coming from artists who, in many cases, have played all over the world

Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival is truly an intimate affair and a vibrant East Coast experience - a chance to get up close and personal with the artists who sing the songs that influence and shape our culture (Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society, 2016)

2.2.2 Embrace your inner rum runner

With almost 4,000 kilometres of shoreline, Nova Scotia is home to lots of secret ocean alcoves and hidden ports, Lunenburg included These secluded spots are thought to have given way to the province's favourite drink: rum

li

Trang 18

Picture 2.8 Rum drink Source: ironworksdistillery.com Nova Scotia became most known for rum running during Prohibition Instead of just trolling the waters for tuna and salmon, fisherman decided to take it upon themselves to fill the US demand by repurposing their boats to smuggle spirits

Today, you can relive some of that history by walking or biking the Rum Runner Trail, which runs from Halifax to Lunenburg Once at your destination, it's time to taste the past

at the Ironworks Distillery Opened in 2009, this distillery uses locally grown produce to make their spirits, which include rum, fruit liqueurs, gin, and vodka Located in a renovated marine blacksmith's shop dating back to 1893, the ambiance and their spirits and cocktails will transport you to a different time

Lunenburg's arts scene is much bigger than you'd expect for a small town About 10 per cent of the town's businesses are in some way related to the arts There are at least eight galleries, a number of art and pottery studios, and even a tattoo parlour! As you explore the city, definitely take the time to pop into these locations, meet the people behind the art, and find something you'll be proud to hang on your wall at home
