I Introduction

Life is operating continuously, which makes people also have to race against time

to develop themselves better It also means that there will be countless invisiblepressures that are damaging mentally as well as physically Pressure is present inevery aspect of our life, which directly affects teenagers- future generations of theworld As a result, there are more and more tragic incidents happening in Vietnamthese days that make everyone shiver to realize how serious it is

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this literature review is to know the level of pressure in thestudents of BIFA 8 according to three aspects that are from family, friends and theInternet The study was conducted in May & June, 2022

Research Questions

In the research, to make it clear we decided to separate it into 3 questions as 3parts to answer the main research question:

1 What are the factors that result in the pressure of BIFA 8 students?

2 What are the consequences of these factors for BIFA 8 students?

3 How can we improve the situation?

Limitations of the Study

The limitations in the study that we encountered are limited survey subjects, easyduplicate information, and small survey participants

Trang 8

II Literature Survey

Currently, there are no studies that indicate the main cause of stress Pressurecan't generate it by itself, so there are three typical factors that form it: family, friends, and the Internet

Family is the foundation of each child's personality as they were brought up bytheir parents But because of that, the ideas and prejudices of the previousgeneration are imposed directly on young people, making them feel suffocated andconstrained Besides, the difference in living conditions from other families canmake a young teenager develop thoughts about the inferiority complex “For someyoung people, a negative, stressful or unhappy family atmosphere can affect theirself-esteem and lead to depression Conflict within the family, divorce, orseparation leading to a change in living arrangements can lead to feelings ofinsecurity, guilt, anger, rejection, or a sense of loss Poverty, abuse, and violencewithin the family are also key contributors.” (Action mental health)

Peer pressure is the most common type of pressure on young people who are still

in school and university It's not just the influence of their friends, but sometimesthey put pressure on themselves to prove themselves to their friends and society

“Peer pressure is the stress of strain you feel from friends and schoolmates to act, behave, think and look a certain way.” (Goldsmith) “Peer pressure is a very realissue that affects many teenagers in the world today The society offers manymisleading advertisements that seem to lead teens in all the wrong directions If theyouth of today are more educated, the future of our world will be a lot better off”.(Dobson)

Along with the development of the internet and the outstanding benefits it brings,

we cannot deny that it also brings some pressure in life “In our modern society, young people are fed information which puts pressure on them to meet needs thatare often unrealistic They are inundated with images as to how they are meant tolook, what they are meant to have, and how they are meant to behave, all based onthe assumption that this is important to life.” (Action mental health) Prof YvonneKelly, an epidemiologist at UCL, said: “One of the big challenges with usinginformation about the amount of time spent on social media is that it isn’t possible

to know what is going on for young people, and what they are encountering whilstonline,”

Therefore, we can see that the pressure created by all the things may seem sofamiliar to us but can have a huge impact on our mental health But also because of

Trang 9

that, we can face the problem directly from which to draw a solution to avoid andfight pressure optimistically.

III Methods

1 Research subject:

- Research Topic: The increase of vulnerable children nowadays

- Research Object: Student of BIFA 8 Program

- Research Subject: The perspective on children’s mental and physical health

2 Research rationale

According to The World Health Organization (WHO), about 62,000 adolescentsdied in 2016 because of self-harm, which is now the third leading cause of deathfor adolescents aged 15–19 If children’s mental health is not treated appropriately,

it can lead to various disadvantageous outcomes or even suicide

Based on the topic, we have added questionnaires to support the topic:

 What is your gender?

 Have you ever been compared with other friends?

 Have you ever been punished because of bad marks?

 Have you ever been bullied because you have something different fromother students?

 Have you ever done something you wouldn't want to do?

 How often do you get sad (or even cry because of the fact you faced before)after hearing sad music?

 Have you ever be attacked or made fun of on social media?

We conducted semi-structured interviews with about 70 students in the BIFA 8program We used descriptive content analysis to characterize the ethical rationaleand this chapter presents the findings, analysis, discussion and interpretation ofdata gathered wherein the objective is to know why today's young generation is sovulnerable and bored with life

 The first and second question both about family, which is the beginning ofenvironmental affects the youngster There are various beliefs that the

Trang 10

pressure to study, shouldering the career dreams of parents is a big cause ofdepression and mental disorders in teenagers.

 The third and fourth question are the deep understandings about the students'school daily lives, which area and other pupils will be the first place andpeople the children contact with

 The final questions are about the natural reaction which directly knows parlyabout the respondents’ confidence

We divided the sections to find information to make a complete report, namely:Dao Hai Anh: Abstract, Literature survey

Nguyen Tam Truc: Introduction, Discussion

Nguyen Thai Ha: Methods, Results

Nguyen Ngoc Khue: Conclusions, References

We then took the data we surveyed from NEU students and compared it with thedata we looked at around the world After we have gathered enough informationinto specific data based on articles and books, we have made a complete report Finally, the aim of this research is to find out the percentage of vulnerablestudents, who are under pressure because of various reasons that come fromseveral sights in life

IV Results

This chapter presents the findings, analysis, discussion and interpretation of datagathered wherein the objective is to know the Students BIFA 8 and Peer Pressure

Chart 1:

Parents' comparison in their child’s studying with others

The table above shows the perceived level of peer pressure in terms of studying ofBIFA 8 students about whether or not their parents compare themselves to others. While there was a small number of people that tended to choose their parents oftenand sometimes compare them with better people (18.6%), most of the participants(62.9%) held the view that there always appears a comparison between them andothers in their parents' conversation Moreover, the number of students supposedthat only a small frequency for parents to compare their studying (18.6%), is thesame as the percentage of students who often have this kind of comparison

Trang 12

Chart 2:

Parents use punishment because of the bad score

The table above illustrates that there is still the majority of BIFA 8 students whonot only have mental problems but also have physical hurt because of bad scores. The peak of this table reaches 44.3% which shows that students often are punished, and the lowest percentage is 0% Also, a number of students sometimes have beenpunished (27.1%) is 9% bigger than those who have never experienced this

Trang 13

Chart 3:

The effect of classmate's style

The table above shows the style of classmates influence on teenagers According toBIFA 8 students, 31 of them agree with this opinion Also, they occupy half of allparticipants, which are obviously the biggest votes with 44.3% The number ofstudents who disagree are lower than 7.2%, compared to the largest percentage. However, there are only 18.6% of students who are in between 2 opinions, as thelowest votes

Trang 16

Chart 6:

The students have been attacked or made fun of on social media

The table above are the figures for under-weather students in BIFA 8 who areaffected because of social media words about themselves It is clear that there was

a small percentage of pupils that never be evaluated, which hit a low of 14,3%; andthe peak reaches 42,8% shows that there is a part of the BIFA 8 students stillalways being hurt because of social media

V Discussion

According to the previous hypothesis, we think that most young people today arehaving psychological problems in their lives Public opinion is the object, whichmakes teenagers mistakenly believe that it is their life goal It is for this reason thatmany young people suffer from depression and choose rather negative ways torelieve stress We did this survey to better understand the thoughts, moods, andpressures of students, who come from all over Vietnam, especially those studying

at the BIFA 8 Program of National Economics University

Trang 17

We always wonder what this cause is and why it has become such a controversialtopic lately Why? The reason for this phenomenon is that most of the pressurecomes from parents, friends, and the influence of social networks AlexanderGraham Bell once said: "When one door closes, another opens But we often look

so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that hasopened for us." Our life is like a Rubik's cube with many aspects, we cannot followthe majority and lose ourselves Through our previous survey, 85% to 90% ofBIFA 8 students are struggling to cope with such pressures, almost every day theyhave to do things they don't want to

Firstly, we see that children are frequently compared by their parents with otherchildren of the same age This proves that they are not valued in the eyes of theirparents and this inadvertently leads them to an invisible pressure that makeschildren deeply hurt Parents always dream and want to bring the best for theirchildren, but sometimes it's the wrong way The Jakarta Post once wrote on thewebsite in 2016, Parental pressure: A fine line between caring and caring toomuch, “Many parents want their children to be the star of the class, the top of theschool This is not wrong in that we must aim high to reach our utmost potentialbut there is, however, a saying that "a chicken can run, canoodle, play and eat Itcan enjoy the time it lives When it tries to fly, though, it will only disappointitself".”

Through our research, many freshmen are affected not only mentally, but alsophysically The peak is that up to 44.3% of people voted that they were oftenpunished by their parents for low grades when they were still in school This showsthat many families are still chasing the achievement disease, always wanting theirchildren to be better than others, leaving their children vulnerable to long-termdamage and prone to bad memories in them

Not only that, when studying in a competitive environment, many students areeasily bored because they cannot keep up with their peers' progress This is alsoconsidered to be the main factor that makes many students easily feel pressured bytheir peers For example, all students in the class are well-off, go to school with ashuttle or they study in selected classes, but their own abilities are only average It

is the unbalanced living and learning environment that makes young peopleinclined towards negative things Being under pressure will make them not onlyfeel self-deprecating and shy, but also fear that they will be isolated and bullied. For example, when studying is not good, good friends will not want tocommunicate, play with or if they have a more difficult situation, they will be
