Exercise 2 Read the text and then answer the questions.

Every year, the average temperature of the Earth's surface gets a little bit warmer This gradual trend is called global warming Warmer weather may sound nice, but global warming is something to be very concerned about.

Scientists are worried that continued warmer temperatures could damage the environment in many devastating ways Rising temperatures might cause plants and animals to become extinct They could melt enough polar ice to cause the levels of the sea to rise Weather patterns could also change There might be more droughts or serious storms with flooding In some areas, human diseases could spread.

What is causing global warming? Humans are mostly to blame Pollution from factories and cars add toxic gases to the air These gases rise to the earth's atmosphere As the sun's rays warm the Earth, the gases work much like the glass in a greenhouse They help trap the heat in the atmosphere and make the Earth grow warmer That is why they are nicknamed "greenhouse gases".

It is our responsibility to take care of our planet Global warming is a serious problem with serious consequences If we want future generations to enjoy their time on Earth, we must act now!

Exercise 3 Read the text and then do the tasks followed.

Pollution is one of the greatest problems facing mankind The nuclear accident in Japan which following an earthquake, tsunami and the poisoning of the river Rhine by chemicals are just two recent examples of disasters affecting the environment, what can be done? Some people say that there is no practical solution However, I believe the problem can be dealt with on such levels as internationally, nationally, and, last but not least, on a personal level.

Let us begin with the international level and the international action that can be taken When a disaster occurs, it affects millions of people Radiation doesn't respect international borders Therefore, there should be strict safety regulations governing the constructions reactors Furthermore, reactors should be regularly inspected by teams of international experts.

What can be done on a national level? Governments must be prepared to take action against pollution For instance, air pollution could be reduced if car manufacturers and companies were obliged to fit effective filters on car exhausts and factory chimneys These measures would in turn help to reduce the damage caused to lakes and forests by acid rain.

Lastly, what can we do as individuals? First, I believe we should all be prepared for changes in our lifestyles I think that everyone should try to use public transport or bicycles as much as possible I also think that we should boycott products such as aerosols which damage the ozone layer.

To sum up, I have tried to show that there are steps that can be taken in the fight against pollution It is a problem that can be solved given the high levels of

Trang 21

commitment However, only by acting as individuals first can we oblige governments to act in their turn.

1 What is the main idea of the passage? A Pollution cannot be solved at any level.

B The international level is the only effective way to combat pollution.

C Pollution can be addressed through international, national, and personal efforts D Individual actions have no impact on pollution control.

2 What are NOT a dangerous example of pollution mentioned in the text? A Nuclear accidents B Earthquakes

C Using public transport D Poisoning of the river Rhine by chemicals

3 On how many levels can we deal with pollution?

A One level B Two levels C Three levels D Four levels 4 Mark T (True) or F (False) for each statement:

A _ The author believes that we can solve the problem of pollution B _ Any nuclear disaster affects only the country where it occurs C _ Reactors can be dealt by anyone.

Exercise 3 Read the text and choose the best answer.Going to the mall

Every city in the USA has a mall or tour There are about 1,100 malls in the US These giant store-filled buildings are one of America's greatest entertainment options for teens and families.

Mall of America in Minnesota is the largest mall It is so big that it has an amusement park in it, Nickelodeon Universe, with several roller coasters! There

Trang 40

are more than 500 stores in it, about 400,000m2 and about 12,000 people work there.

But malls nowadays aren't the same as they used to be in the 80s and 90s During those decades, teens would go to the mall and spend hours shopping, playing video games at the arcades, or just hanging out with friends It was cool in the summer and warm in the winter In those days, malls provided the perfect source of shopping and entertainment for entire families.

Nowadays, you can still eat in the food court and go to the movies, but there aren't many arcades left Millennials have their Xboxes or PS4s, and they like shopping online, which is also happening with more and more people from other generations And as more people shop online and play video games at home, fewer people go to the mall to hang out.

Hopefully, malls will remain one of the great American pastimes But only time will tell how people in the future will prefer to spend their time.

1 People like malls because _ A it is a place of entertainment

B it's cheap and large

C there are so many malls in every city 2 Why is the Mall of America so famous? A Because it's the official Mall of the country B Because it's in Minnesota.

C Because of its size.

3 What can't people do at malls very much anymore? A Hang out with friends.

B Play video games C Go for lunch.

4 Malls nowadays _ than in the past A are bigger

B are more popular

C have fewer entertainment options 5 Why are malls dying?
