And how can we develop and maintain a healthy friendship? II UNDERSTANDING FRIENDSHIP Definition of friendship and healthy friendship Friendship is a fundamental aspect of human relationships, characterized by mutual affection, trust, and support between individuals It is a unique bond that goes beyond mere acquaintanceship and involves emotional connection, shared experiences, and a sense of companionship In all cultures, friendships are considered to be crucial relationships throughout a person’s life span According to the APA Dictionary of Psychology, friendship is a voluntary relationship between two or more people that is relatively longlasting and in which those involved tend to be concerned with meeting others' needs and interests as well as satisfying their own desires It provides a safe space for individuals to be themselves and freely express their thoughts and emotions While all friendships are different, some common traits are present in a healthy friendship It can be seen that a healthy friendship is a supportive and respectful relationship between individuals, built on trust, effective communication, and mutual understanding It involves providing emotional support, maintaining equality, and enjoying shared interests Healthy friendships promote personal growth, respect boundaries, and contribute to the well-being of both individuals involved Characteristics of a healthy friendship There are several key characteristics contributing to healthy friendships These characteristics help establish a strong foundation and promote meaningful connections between individuals There are some essential traits of healthy friendships:  Trust and reliability Trust and reliability are considered the foundation of healthy friendships Without them, friends can not rely on each other and have confidence in one another’s words, and actions In order to build trust and reliability, they need to keep their commitments, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate consistent support and dependability  Open and honest communication Effective communication is essential for a healthy friendship Friends openly express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns, while actively listening to one another They encourage open dialogue, provide constructive feedback, and address any issues or conflicts that may arise  Mutual respect Healthy friendships are built on mutual respect Friends value each other's perspectives, boundaries, and individuality They treat one another with kindness, consideration, and acceptance, appreciating each other's strengths and differences  Emotional Support and Empathy Healthy friendships offer emotional support and empathy Friends are there for one another during challenging times, offering a listening ear, understanding, and compassion They validate each other's emotions and provide comfort, encouragement, and a sense of belonging  Shared Interests and Activities Healthy friendships often involve shared interests and activities Friends engage in enjoyable experiences together, fostering a sense of connection and creating shared memories They participate in activities that bring them joy, provide opportunities for bonding, and strengthen their friendship  Positive Influence and growth Healthy friendships inspire personal growth and positive influence Friends support each other's goals and aspirations, encourage selfimprovement, and motivate one another to reach their full potential They provide guidance, celebrate achievements, and offer constructive feedback for personal development  Reciprocity and equality Besides these above-mentioned factors, healthy friendships are also characterized by reciprocity and equality Friends contribute equally to the relationship, balancing giving and receiving support, time, and effort There is a sense of fairness and mutual investment in nurturing friendship  Respect others’ boundaries Friends in healthy friendships respect each other's boundaries They understand and honor individual needs for personal space, privacy, and independence They communicate openly about boundaries and ensure that they are not crossed, fostering a sense of safety and trust By embodying these characteristics, healthy friendships cultivate a positive and fulfilling bond between individuals, promoting happiness, well-being, and personal development Importance of healthy friendship Healthy friendships play a significant role in our lives and have a multitude of benefits There are many factors that suggest friendships are really fundamental in daily life:  Emotional support Firstly, friends provide emotional support during both joyful and challenging times They offer a listening ear, empathy, and understanding, which can alleviate stress, boost mood, and enhance overall well-being Having someone to share our thoughts, feelings, and experiences with can provide a sense of comfort and belonging  Mental health and resilience Secondly, healthy friendships contribute to positive mental health and resilience Close friendships are associated with lower levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness Friends can offer different perspectives, help us gain insight into our own thoughts and emotions, and provide encouragement and motivation during difficult times  Increasing happiness Thirdly, engaging in healthy friendships brings joy and happiness Spending time with friends, engaging in shared activities, and creating positive memories fosters a sense of happiness and fulfillment Friends can provide laughter, companionship, and a sense of belonging, enhancing our overall life satisfaction  Social support and networking Fourthly, healthy friendships provide social support and a sense of community Friends can offer advice, guidance, and practical help when needed They can also introduce us to new people, expand our social networks, and create opportunities for personal and professional growth  Personal development Fifthly, healthy friendships contribute to personal development and growth Friends can challenge us to step out of our comfort zones, pursue our goals, and explore new interests They provide constructive feedback, support our numerous benefits that enrich our lives and contribute to our overall flourishing III MAINTAINING A HEALTHY FRIENDSHIP Nurturing friendship Friendship is an essential aspect of human life, which has a significant impact on an individual's physical and mental well-being Nurturing friendships requires an intentional effort from both parties involved It involves investing time, sharing experiences and interests, supporting each other, and expressing gratitude and appreciation This session discusses the importance of nurturing friendships and provides some main points that can help individuals develop and maintain healthy friendships  Making time for each other One of the essential aspects of nurturing friendship is making time for each other In today's fast-paced world, individuals have busy schedules that leave little room for social interactions However, making time for friends is crucial in strengthening the bond between individuals Spending quality time with friends helps to build trust, improve communication, and foster intimacy Individuals can make time for each other by scheduling regular meetups, phone calls, or video chats Additionally, engaging in activities such as hobbies, games, or sports can also help create time for each other  Sharing experiences and interests Sharing experiences and interests is another important aspect of nurturing friendships Individuals have unique experiences and interests, which can contribute to building meaningful connections between friends Sharing experiences can create shared memories that can last a lifetime while sharing interests can lead to engaging discussions and new experiences Individuals can share experiences and interests by engaging in activities together, attending events, or simply discussing their experiences and interests  Supporting each other Supporting each other is another crucial aspect of nurturing friendship Friends should be there for each other through thick and thin Providing emotional and physical support during difficult times can help strengthen the bond between friends Individuals can support each other by listening, offering advice, or helping each other with tasks relationship, including friendships Conflict can be defined as a disagreement or argument between two or more parties, resulting from differences in opinions, values, or needs Understanding conflict involves acknowledging that it is a natural part of relationships and recognizing that it can be an opportunity for growth and improvement  Common sources of conflict Resolving conflict in friendships is to identify common sources of conflict Common sources of conflict in friendships include differences in communication styles, values, goals, and expectations Additionally, conflicts can arise from jealousy, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings Identifying common sources of conflict can help individuals be proactive in preventing conflicts and resolving them when they arise  Strategies for resolving conflict Effective strategies for resolving conflict include active listening, problem-solving, compromise, and negotiation Active listening involves actively listening to the other person's perspective and feelings without interrupting or judging Problem-solving involves working collaboratively to find a mutually beneficial solution  Dealing with disagreements constructively Compromise involves finding a middle ground that satisfies both parties involved Negotiation involves using communication and problemsolving skills to reach a mutually beneficial agreement Applying effective strategies for resolving conflict can help individuals find a solution that benefits both parties involved Constructively dealing with disagreements involves maintaining respect, being empathetic, and avoiding negative behaviors such as blaming, criticizing, or avoiding the issue Additionally, individuals should focus on finding a solution that benefits both parties involved and avoids escalating the conflict Dealing with disagreements constructively can help individuals build friendships trust, improve communication, and strengthen Dealing with Challenges in Friendships  Handling distance and time constraints One of the biggest challenges in friendships is handling distance and time constraints Whether it is due to moving away, work commitments, or other life circumstances, maintaining a friendship from a distance can be difficult However, some strategies can be implemented to overcome these challenges These strategies include utilizing technology to stay in touch, scheduling regular catch-up calls or video chats, and making the effort to visit each other whenever possible By making an effort to stay connected despite the distance, friendships can be maintained and even strengthened  Changes in life circumstances Another challenge in friendships is dealing with changes in life circumstances Life changes such as starting a new job, getting married, having children, or moving to a new city can have a significant impact on friendships It can be difficult to adjust to these changes, especially if they impact the amount of time and energy that can be devoted to maintaining the friendship However, open communication and a willingness to adapt can help overcome these challenges By discussing how life changes are impacting friendships and making an effort to adapt to these changes, friendships can endure  Misunderstandings and disagreements Misunderstandings and disagreements can also present challenges in friendships It is natural for friends to have differences in opinions, values, and beliefs However, disagreements can cause tension and strain on the friendship It is important to address misunderstandings and disagreements constructively and respectfully This involves active listening, acknowledging the other person's perspective, and avoiding negative behaviors such as blaming or attacking By working through disagreements in a constructive manner, friendships can become stronger Friendships are not always easy, and challenges can arise However, by implementing strategies to handle distance and time constraints, adapting to changes in life circumstances, and dealing with misunderstandings and disagreements constructively, friendships can endure It is important to remember that friendships require effort, communication, and a willingness to work through challenges When faced with challenges, it is an opportunity to strengthen the friendship and deepen the bond between friends IV DEVELOPING A HEALTHY FRIENDSHIP Trust and honesty Trust and honesty are essential components of any healthy friendship In this report, we will explore the importance of trust and honesty in friendships and how they can be developed and maintained  Importance of Trust in Friendships: Trust is the foundation of any friendship Without trust, it is difficult to form a meaningful relationship Trust allows friends to be vulnerable with each other, share personal information, and confide in each other A trustworthy friend is someone who will keep confidential information to themselves and not share it with others This builds a sense of security and safety within the friendship  Developing Trust in Friendships: Trust is developed over time through consistent behavior It is built by keeping promises, being dependable, and acting in the best interests of the friend It is important to be transparent and honest in all communication with the friend It is also important to listen and understand the friend's point of view and to show empathy and support when needed Trust can also be developed by sharing personal experiences and showing vulnerability  Importance of Honesty in Friendships: Honesty is equally important in friendships Honesty means being truthful, even when it is difficult A friend who is honest will not sugarcoat the truth or hide their true feelings This builds trust and respect within the friendship Honesty also allows for open communication and can prevent misunderstandings  Developing Honesty in Friendships: 10 Honesty is developed through open and transparent communication It is important to be truthful, even when it is uncomfortable Honesty also means being willing to listen to the other person's point of view and to accept constructive criticism It is important to be aware of one's own biases and to be willing to challenge them Developing honesty also involves setting boundaries and communicating them clearly to the friend  Maintaining Trust and Honesty in Friendships: Maintaining trust and honesty requires ongoing effort It is important to communicate regularly with the friend and to be transparent in all communication It is also important to follow through on promises and commitments and to be dependable It is important to show empathy and support when needed and to be willing to apologize and make amends when mistakes are made Maintaining trust and honesty also involves respecting the friend's boundaries and being willing to compromise when necessary  Conclusion: In conclusion, trust and honesty are for those who are shy or introverted This report explores the process of building new friendships, the challenges that can arise, and the strategies that can be used to overcome them  The Importance of Building New Friendships: Friendships provide a sense of belonging and social support that are crucial for mental and emotional well-being Building new friendships can also provide opportunities for personal growth, learning, and new experiences For those who have recently moved to a new place or 11 experienced a significant life change, building new friendships can be especially important in helping them adjust to their new circumstances  Challenges in Building New Friendships: Building new friendships can be challenging, especially for those who are shy, introverted, or have social anxiety Some of the common challenges that can arise include fear of rejection, difficulty in initiating conversations, lack of common interests or hobbies, and time constraints In addition, some people may struggle with trust issues, which can make it difficult for them to form close friendships  Strategies for Building New Friendships: Despite the challenges, there are several strategies that can be used to build new friendships: a) Get Involved in Social Activities : Joining clubs, groups, or organizations that align with your interests and hobbies can be a great way to meet new people and form friendships b) Be Open and Approachable : Smile, make eye contact, and be open to starting conversations with new people Remember that many others may also be looking to make new friends c) Take the Initiative : Don't be afraid to initiate plans or invite people to join you for activities or events This can help to establish a sense of shared interests and build a stronger connection d) Practice Active Listening : Showing genuine interest in what others have to say can help to build trust and establish deeper connections e) Be Patient : Building friendships takes time, so it's important to be patient and not get discouraged if friendships don't form immediately Keep trying, and remember that forming deep and meaningful friendships takes effort and time  Conclusion: Building new friendships can be a challenging but rewarding experience By getting involved in social activities, being open and approachable, taking the initiative, practicing active listening, and being patient, individuals can form deep and meaningful friendships that provide a sense of belonging and social support 12 V RESULT OF SURVEY “DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING A HEALTHY FRIENDSHIP” A survey was conducted with the participation of 103 people, with the majority being female (64.4%) Male participants accounted for 33.7% and other genders accounted for 1.9% The age group of the participants was mainly between 18-24, accounting for 96%, while the age groups of 25-30 and >30 accounted for 3% and 1% respectively It can be said that the topic "Developing and maintaining a healthy friendship" received a lot of attention from young people Through the survey, our group was able to collect data and answer the research questions, which are: - Do people value friendship? - What is the level of understanding of people about healthy friendship? 13 - What are the most important factors that contribute to a healthy friendship? - What are the common challenges that friends face in maintaining a healthy friendship, and how can they be addressed? - What role trust and respect play in a healthy friendship? - What are some common signs of an unhealthy relationship, and how can you address them? Importance of friendship By having everyone rate on a scale from 1-5, we have identified the level at which people value friendship, their confidence in making new friends, their positive listening attitude when talking with friends, their willingness to apologize when making mistakes, and their effort to maintain friendships The results are as follows: - Most survey participants highly value friendship, with 50 people rating it as extremely important at level 5, 37 people at level 4, and only people rating it as unimportant at level - The level of confidence in making new friends among survey participants falls within the average to good range, with 42 people choosing level and 26 people choosing level - People generally listen positively when chatting with their friends, with 43 people choosing level and 42 people choosing level - Most people tend to be quite willing to apologize when they make mistakes with their friends, with 22, 34, and 42 people respectively choosing levels 3, 4, and - Most people make an effort to maintain their friendships over time, with 27 people choosing level 3, 40 people choosing level 4, and 31 people choosing level The survey results showed that friendship is highly valued by most people who participated This demonstrates that friendship is still an important value for many in modern society Another notable point is that the confidence level in making new friends is at a moderate to decent level, indicating that some participants still have difficulty in seeking and making new friends However, they all have a positive attitude towards listening to their friends during conversations, being willing to apologize 14 and trying to maintain their friendships This shows that they are all trying to build and maintain good relationships with their friends In conclusion, the survey results indicate that friendship and concern for friends are still an important part of many people's lives Developing a healthy friendship In this section, we want to know how to develop a healthy friendship Therefore, we have set questions to conduct a survey Below are the results: - Of the necessary qualities we provided for finding a friend, trustworthiness, empathy, and honesty are the top three qualities selected with 85.4%, 77.7%, and 70.9% respectively Next is loyalty with 53.4% and humor with 44.7% Physical attraction is not the most important thing when looking for a friend, as it only accounts for 8.7% - Honesty and reliability, mutual support and sharing emotions in daily life are the top most important factors that the survey found to develop a healthy friendship - In addition, personal boundaries are also highlighted in a healthy relationship, where most people choose to respect each other's privacy and personal space, understand and respect each other's limits, allow open and honest communication - 85.5% and 64.1% respectively are the percentage of participants who choose to support each other in difficult times and express appreciation and reciprocity, which are the two most promoting behaviors of healthy giving and receiving in a friendship - There are quite a few challenges in developing a healthy friendship, specifically jealousy and comparison (74.8%), trust issues (71.8%), lack of communication (55.3%), different backgrounds (34%), and distance (28.2%) - Vulnerability can also strengthen a friendship by building trust and deepening the bond, supporting each other through difficult times, and sharing personal thoughts and feelings In summary, the most important thing when developing a healthy friendship is to have trust, empathy, and honesty among friends Additionally, supporting each other in difficult times and respecting personal boundaries are also crucial During the process of developing a 15 friendship, we also need to face and overcome challenges such as jealousy, trust issues, lack of communication, or geographical distance These things need to be positively addressed and build trust among friends to sustain and maintain a beautiful and lasting friendship Maintaining a healthy friendship We also surveyed how people maintain friendships, and here are the results: - Survey participants tend to maintain friendships by spending time together in person, supporting each other through difficult times, meeting them on special occasions (birthdays, holidays, etc.), and regular communication Some people also choose to maintain their relationships by talking negatively about someone they dislike or competing in certain aspects of their lives - Expressing appreciation and gratitude contribute greatly to maintaining friendships It helps strengthen the bond and foster positivity, build trust and reciprocity, and promote a supportive and nurturing environment, with the rates chosen being 79.6%, 71.8%, and 50.5% respectively - To build and maintain trust in a healthy friendship, the three most chosen factors are respecting each other's boundaries and privacy (84.5%), honesty and transparency (78.6%), and dependability and reliability (71.8%) -
