WELCOME TO MY PRESENTATION STRUCTURE OF THE PRESENTATION Introduction Presentation of the problem Scope and limitation of research Result Conclusion Theory overview Some suggested solutions INTRODUCTION • Vietnamese and English are languages rich in nuance and expression • One of easiest ways to express nuances and expressions is through idioms • Colors in idioms of each language play different roles • Mastering idioms makes it easier to understand and use language PRESENTATION OF THE PROBLEM Aims: • Identify and describe semantic and syntactic features of idioms • Find out the similarities and differences • Supply some suggested solutions THEORY OVERVIEW Definition of idiom • give information about conceptions (Carine, 2005, p 495) • functions as a single unit { Richards and Schmidt ,2002, p 246) • meaning is not predictable from their component parts {Makkai ,1972, p 122) THEORY OVERVIEW Types of Idioms • Pure idioms: a single semantic, meaning of individual words can not be summed together to produce the meaning of the whole Eg: smell the rat = suspicious sense the rat with nose • Semi - idioms: The combination of direct meaning and contextual meaning Eg: rain cats and dogs = rain heavily THEORY OVERVIEW Semi - idioms: The combination of direct meaning and contextual meaning = rain heavily rain + cats and dogs Eg: rain cats and dogs = (direct meaning) (contextual meaning) Literal idioms : base on the direct meaning of the parts that create it, have only meaning that is literal meaning , no figurative meaning Eg: black and white has only meaning is,clear THEORY OVERVIEW Classifications of idioms • Semantic meaning : refers to the figurative meaning of an idiom, which can have a negative or positive meaning depending on the context of use Eg : Quyt lam cam chiu • Syntactic meaning : refers to the fixedness of word parts , cannot change the word order, word form, word type Eg: In black and white In white and black SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF RESEARCH • Data : 50 English idioms and 50 Vietnamese idioms • Support tools : Excel, dictionary , google • Research time : from January 30 to March 24 • Research force: supervisor, friends and me RESULT Syntactic features of idioms containing the words “black” in English and “ den “ in Vietnamese English black as coal Numbe Occurrence  26% r 13 Number Đen mực Adj + CW + N Adj + CW + N Black and white   Vietnamese 2% Not exist 0 0% Dân ngu khu đen Occurren 18% ce  0% Adj+Conj+ Adj -
