a –6– I EC 61 968-6: 201 © I EC 201 INTRODUCTION The I EC 61 968 standard, taken as a whole, defines interfaces for the major elem ents of an interface architecture for Distribution Management Systems (DM S) I EC 61 968-1 , Interface architecture and general recommendations , identifies and establishes requirem ents for standard interfaces based on an I nterface Reference Model (I RM) I EC 61 968-3 to of this standard define interfaces relevant to each of the m ajor business functions described by the I nterface Reference Model As used in I EC 61 968, a DMS consists of various distributed application com ponents for the utility to manage electrical distribution networks These capabilities include m onitoring and control of equipm ent for power delivery, m anagem ent processes to ensure system reliability, voltage management, demand -side m anagem ent, outage m anagement, work management, automated m apping and facilities m anagem ent This set of standards is lim ited to the definition of interfaces and is implem entation independent They provide for interoperability among different com puter systems, platforms, and languages Methods and technologies used to implem ent functionality conform ing to these interfaces are considered outside of the scope of these standards; onl y the interface itself is specified in these standards The purpose of this part of I EC 61 968 is to define a standard for the integration of Maintenance and Construction Systems (MC), which would include Work Managem ent System s, with other system s and business functions within the scope of I EC 61 968 The scope of this standard is the exchange of inform ation between Maintenance and Construction System s and other system s within the utility enterprise The specific details of comm unication protocols those systems employ are outside the scope of this standard I nstead, this standard will recognize and model the general capabilities that can be potentiall y provided by maintenance and construction systems including planned, unplanned and conditional maintenance I n this way, this standard will not be impacted by the specification, development and/or deploym ent of next generation maintenance system s, either through the use of standards or proprietary m eans The I EC 61 968 series of standards is intended to facilitate inter-application integration as opposed to intra-application integration I ntra-application integration is aimed at program s in the sam e application system, usuall y communicating with each other using m iddleware that is embedded in their underlying runtime environm ent, and tends to be optim ised for close, realtime, synchronous connections and interactive request/repl y or conversation comm unication models I EC 61 968, by contrast, is intended to support the inter-application integration of a utility enterprise that needs to conn ect disparate applications that are alread y built or new (legacy or purchased applications), each supported by dissimilar runtime environments Therefore, these interface standards are relevant to loosel y coupled applications with m ore heterogeneity in languages, operating system s, protocols and m anagement tools This series of standards is intended to support applications that need to exchange data every few seconds, m inutes, or hours rather than waiting for a nightl y batch run This series of standards, which are intended to be implemented with m iddleware services that exchange messages among applications, will com plement, not replace, utility data warehouses, database gateways, and operational stores As used in I EC 61 968, a Distribution Management System (DMS) consists of various distributed application com ponents for the utility to m anage electrical distribution networks These capabilities include monitoring and control of equipment for power delivery, managem ent processes to ensure system reliability, voltage m anagem ent, demand-side managem ent, outage managem ent, work m anagem ent, autom ated m apping and facilities managem ent Standard interfaces are defined for each class of applications identified in the I nterface Reference M odel (I RM), which is described in I EC 61 968-1 , Interface architecture and general recommendations I EC 61 968-6: 201 © I EC 201 –7– This part of I EC 61 968 contains the clauses listed in Table Tabl e
