BSI BS AU 206-1 :1 986 Scope and field of application This International Standard defines terms relating 2.6 test equipment to diagnostic systems for motor vehicles devices used to carry out a test Test equipment is Terms and definitions 2.6.1 not necessarily a tester of symptoms 2.1 diagnosis the determination of the cause of malfunction of a road vehicle 2.2 monitoring (of motor vehicle systems) the surveillance of a motor vehicle system or component during operation 2.3 inspection the observation or measurement of an item, or characteristic of an item, and comparison of the observation(s) with pre- established standards 2.4 specification for diagnosis a description of a device or system that defines in detail its functional performance capabilities, and the installation, environmental and operational requirements or limitations 2.5 test a procedure or action taken to compare, under real or simulated conditions, parameters of a system or component against specified performance and/or values 2.5 limits the set of values that describes the established boundaries of acceptance The same characteristics diagnostic system a system of measurement and interpretation for the purpose of diagnosis 2.6.1 diagnostic sensor any sensing device used partly or exclusively for diagnostic purposes to provide information on conditions of a motor vehicle or parts of it 2.6.1 1 built-in diagnostic sensor a sensor for diagnostic purposes which is part of the permanent equipment of a motor vehicle 2.6.1 plug-in diagnostic sensor a sensor for diagnostic purposes which is part of the off- vehicle diagnostic equipment, to be fitted, prior to diagnosis, to a receiving device already provided on the motor vehicle for this purpose 2.6.1 clip-on diagnostic sensor a sensor for diagnostic purposes which is part of the off- vehicle diagnostic equipment, to be attached to the motor vehicle prior to diagnosis No special on- vehicle equipment is necessary 2.6.1 crankshaft position sensor a sensor producing one or more defined electrical signals each representing a specified crankshaft position may have several sets of limits depending upon the 2.6.1 time or basis of establishing acceptance (for example reference cylinder sensor new parts limits, overhaul limits and safety limits) a sensor for diagnostic purposes, the signal of which 2.5 corresponds to the beginning of the reference total failure cylinder ignition pulse in the case of spark ignition the termination of the ability of a device to perform its required function 2.5 partial failure a failure resulting from deviation(s) in characteristic(s) beyond specified limits, but not such as to cause complete lack of the required function 2.5 symptom (for diagnosis) an observed or measured characteristic leading to a engines In the case of compression ignition engines, it is a sensor which produces a signal which relates to the beginning of the inj ection of the reference cylinder This relationship depends on the type of sensor and the measuring principle 2.6.2 off-vehicle equipment (for diagnosis) all off- vehicle devices for diagnostic purposes 2.6.3 on-vehicle equipment (for diagnosis) all on- vehicle devices for diagnostic purposes diagnosis © BSI 02- 2000 Li cen sed Copy: Lon d on Sou th Ban k U n i versi ty, Lon d on Sou th Ban k U n i versi ty, Fri Dec 08 6: 57: 07 G
