[NGUYEN THI MINH] March 15, 2013 UNIT 13 : FILMS AND CINEMA SPEAKING Class description: Number of students: 50 Grade: 10th Level: Pre-Intermediate Time: 45 minutes Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Know more vocabulary about kinds of films and adjectives about feeling - Ask and answer about films and cinema, express the attitudes about a film - Improve their speaking skill Assumed knowledge: Ss have already known some vocabulary items related to the topic Anticipated problem(s): +Students may have difficulty expressing their ideas because of limited structures and vocabulary +Some students don’t want to speak +It is likely to lack time because of many activities during the lesson Teaching aids: Board, chalk, textbook, handouts Procedure Time /stage Warmup Technique Aim Brainstorming: Help students prepare some useful words for speaking Teacher’s activities -Greet students -Giving instructions: Our class will be divided into big groups A, B and C in each group; We work in groups of tables In minutes, write all words you know in the piece of paper related to films, kind of films, features of film and your feelings to film and so on After that, quickly as possible, you guys present for your group, come here and write those words on the board The quantity of words you write will be counted Group having more words than other will be winner Check understand of students: How many big groups we have? What will you write in the paper? Ok, let’s get started LESSON PLAN ENGLISH 10 UNIT 13 SPEAKING Students’ activities -greet teacher Listen to T Answer the questions of T Write words they know about film Page [NGUYEN THI MINH] March 15, 2013 PreAims: speaking  To introduce to Ss some kinds of films & adjectives to describe each kinds of film  To help Ss to practice a set of structures to express preferences in meaningful way Present the structure of expressing preferences through situation While Communicative speaking drill: Guessing game -go around -control activities and time -get students write their words on the board Write on the board - Ask Ss about kinds of film - Sticks their kinds of films - Introduce their pronunciation and meanings to Ss Science fiction film Phim khoa học viễn tưởng (small vile town) Cartoon film Phim hoạt hình Horror film Phim kinh dị (twilight -walking dead) Detective film Phim trinh thám (Sherlock Holmes series) Thrillers Phim ly kỳ (prison break) Love story film Phim tâm lí tình cảm War film Phim chiến tranh Action film Phim hành động (ms & mr.smith) Ask students to give examples of kinds of film - Ask Ss to write down in their notebooks TASK ( page 135) - Introduce to Ss some adjectives to describe the films & the structure “find sth + adjective” - Give Ss minutes to make similar dialogues in pairs -Move around the class to help Ss if necessary - Call or pairs to practice - Check pronunciation Adjectives: Interesting: /ˈɪn.trəs.tɪŋ/: thú vị Moving: /'mu:viɳ/ : Cảm động Good fun: /gud fʌn/ : thích thú Violent: /'vaiələnt/ : bạo lực Boring: /´bɔ:riη/ : tẻ nhạt, buồn chán Exciting: /ik´saitiη/ : hồi hộp Terrifying: /'terifaiiη/ : khiếp sợ Task (page 135) - Call pair to read out and translate the dialogue into Vietnamese - Introduce to Ss the structure “prefer + sth + to sth” - Give Ss minutes to make similar dialogues in pairs -Move around the class to help Ss if necessary - Call or pairs to practice -Check pronunciation Give students some film review (Prison break, Titanic and Walking dead) Prison break – a famous thriller of Us TV serial drama was on in Today Tv in 2010 It is a complicated story of two brothers Michael Scofield(Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows(Dominic Purcell) whose lives are changed when the - Listen to the T - Answer T’s question - Repeat after T LESSON PLAN ENGLISH 10 UNIT 13 SPEAKING - Note down on their notebooks - Listen to the T - Work in pairs to make dialogues - Stand up and practice dialogues - Do guessing game with their partner - Share your film they have seen Page [NGUYEN THI MINH] March 15, 2013 elder brother are condemned to death While Lincoln’s waiting his execution, Michael scofield believes that his brother is innocent; therefore, formulates an escape plan The film is full of suspense as they are passed from the police to the FBI Set in the world of crime, spies and secrets, this film will leave you looking over shoulder to see who’s following you Such exciting film is worth watching It’s very interesting One of my favorite films that I have recently seen in National cinema center is Titanic, a love story film It is about the sinking of a luxury ship named Titanic on its first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean The main characters are Jack Dawson, a poor man, and Rose Dewitt Bukater, a high social class woman They fall in love with each other Unfortunately, the ship hits an iceberg and sinks rapidly Many people die, including Jack but Rose still alive I find it really interesting and moving I love it because of its beautiful and skillful characters and spectacular scenes A horror TV serial drama I have seen on internet is the Walking Dead The film tells us about Rick Grimes who is a former police of Atlanta (Andrew Lincoln played) with his family as well as some groups of survivors after doomsday To exist, they must escape and fight against zombies Some scenes were so terrifying with killing zombies violently that I didn’t dare to see However, I prefer it to other films because of characters’ acting and their bravery Communicative activity: role play POSTGive student more speaking chance of practing speaking Ask students to work in pairs -One student of pair gets the card of film review -other student of pair asks your partner some questions to find what the film is (questions in task 4) Communicative activity: role play- guessing Class will be divided into groups, A&B Each student writes name of a film you have seen After that, you guys take turn to ask the other groups about that film to find what the name of film If the group guess correct name of film, they will get 10 points Talk about their favorite films Using the below cues -name of film -genre of film -it is about -main character -I find it… -I prefer it to other because… LESSON PLAN ENGLISH 10 UNIT 13 SPEAKING - Talk about film they like Page
