a system o f designation for poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) materials which may be used as the basis for specifications The types o f poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) materials are di fferentiated from each other by a classification system based on the designatory properties: a) degree o f hydrolysis, b) viscosity o f aqueous solution under defined conditions and on in formation about basic polymer parameters, intended application and/or method o f processing, important properties, additives, colorants, fillers and rein forcing materials This document is applicable to all poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) materials with a degree o f hydrolysis not less than 70 mol% It applies to materials ready for normal use in the form o f powder, granules or pellets and to materials unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance This document does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which may be required to speci fy a material I f such additional properties are required, they are intended to be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in ISO 15023-2, i f suitable In order to designate a thermoplastic material to meet particular specifications, the requirements are given in data block (see 4.1) Normative reading “Thermoplastics”, and an identity block comprising the International Standard number and an individual-item block For unambiguous designation, the individual-item block is subdivided into five data blocks comprising the following information: Data block 1: Identification of the plastic by its abbreviated term, PVAL, in accordance with ISO 1043-1 (see 4.2) Data block 2: Fillers or reinforcing materials and their nominal content (see 4.3) Data block 3: Position 1: Intended application and/or method of processing (see 4.4) Positions to 8: Information about important properties, additives and colour (see 4.4) Data block 4: Designatory properties (see 4.5) Data block 5: For the purpose of specifications, the fi fth data block contains appropriate in formation (see 4.6) The first character o f the individual-item block shall be a hyphen The data blocks shall be separated from each other by commas I f a data block is not used, this shall be indicated by doubling the separation sign, i.e by two commas (,,) Terminal commas may be omitted For part marking, the first two blocks o f the designation are used, connected with a hyphen, and placed between the punctuation specification for a particular material This may be done, for example, by re ference to a suitable national standard or to a standard-like, generally established specification Examples of designations A thermoplastic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) material filled with synthetic material (S) powder (D) and a filler content o f % (per mass) (05), intended for adhesives (A), antiblocking (B) and beads (G3 ), and with degree o f hydrolysis o f 98 mol% (099) and the viscosity o f % aqueous solution o f 25 mPa∙s (26), with no additional information, would be designated: Designation: Thermoplastics ISO
