three-month internship is to help me to gain real-world experience Working as an intern gives me a chance to apply what I learned at school into practice, so I get a new perspective on the translation profession As a result, I can realize my shortcomings and build my career path 1.2 Significance of the internship Working as an intern is extremely crucial because it is not only an opportunity for me to observe daily work at a company, culture and working environment, but also to help me to understand more about the field of translation Furthermore, being an intern helps me make helpful connections, which will give me many advantages later on I was able to get to know my colleagues and build relationships during this time Therefore, in the future they can help me to get a job or provide me with a lot of helpful knowledge CHAPTER OVERVIEW of International Education Consulting Company Overview of International Education Consulting Company 1.1 History of Development International Education Consulting Company (IECS) is a company that was established in March 2018 Knowing the need for the workforce for the nursing profession in the Federal Republic of Germany, IECS was founded to help students who are studying or have graduated from a college or a university to study, work and settle here through the vocational training program Until now, IECS has continued to expand its relationship with German partners in all parts of this country With a commitment to the quality of student input, IECS is trusted by many German partners and becomes their companion for the admissions project 1.2 Mission and Principles 1.2.1 Mission To the students, IECS guarantees that the company will supply the best program for the students, support the students to integrate into a new life in Germany, help the students get the best preferential policies from foreign partners To the employees, IECS makes sure to provide them with an energetic, creative, ethical environment and opportunity to work with foreign partners 1.2.2 Principles IECS operates under the motto "Discipline is strength" and is always clear at work, always assigns tasks according to SMART rules 1.3 Slogan The slogan of the company is “Your success is our success” with the vision that is to become a professional and leading company providing study – work – settlement services in the Vietnam market 1.4 Products and services IECS consults, supports orientation and builds long-term study, labor and settlement plans for students in international environments such as Germany, Australia, the USA, Canada In addition, IECS organizes language courses, cultural exchanges as well as short-term courses for life skills to help students have the best advantages when studying and living abroad Organization structure The Chief Executive Officer is Ms Anna Le She is the founder of International Education Consultancy Services (IECS) She graduated with honors from Mannheim University and worked for leading corporations in Germany such as Bosch and SAP She always puts efficiency and quality as the guideline in the company's operation There are six departments in IECS: Sales Department, Human Resources Department, Training Department, Marketing Department, Re-marketing Department and Legal Department Each of them has its functions and roles In the three-month internship, I had a chance to work in the Training Department It is responsible for organizing German classes, preparing materials for learning German and managing students and classes The internship position I hold is preparing German- learning materials To be specific, I would find and gather German-learning documents in English on the Internet, then translate them into Vietnamese I was luckily instructed by Ms Nguyen Hoang Minh Nhut Thanks to her careful guidance, I received a lot of valuable lessons CHAPTER ASSIGNED TASKS AND METHODS OF IMPLEMENTATIONS Internship assignments 1 Finding materials Finding and gathering materials were an essential part of my job I had to prepare some Germanlearning materials in English and the required information Therefore, in the first two weeks, I was assigned to use English to search some information and materials which topic was given by my team leader such as the daily German conversations at the office or at school, German vocabulary used in business, then I gathered them in a folder on Google Drive that the company had prepared for me My team leader would consider which materials suitable for the need of the company and mark them The deadline was not very tight It was usually about days, so I spent a day and a half finding some reliable source of materials and reading them carefully to ensure that they were appropriate and for the rest of the time, I would gather them 1.2 Translating Translating was my main job After the materials were gathered, I started to translate them into Vietnamese Most of the materials were used for learning German, so I needed to make sure that the translations were accurate, clear and easy to understand I was assigned to translate ten documents every week The process of translating was quite similar to what I had been taught at school Firstly, I started reading the documents in the source language carefully to have an overview of them, then I chose the suitable words and sentences which I would like to use If I encountered some terms that I did not know their meanings, I would search them on the Internet to find their Vietnamese translations and the ways to use them Nevertheless, if I could not understand them clearly, I would ask my team leader and take note of her answers And finally, I began to translate the documents into the target language When my translation was completed, I submitted it to my team leader If it had some points which needed to be corrected, she would let me know and give me some advice After the translation was approved, I added it into the folder that the company had already prepared for me on Google Drive Methods of implementations 2.1 Materials-searching method To search materials efficiently, I used the method of finding materials through a search engine The one I used is Google To use this engine, I needed to enter keywords in the search bar When I wanted to find materials, I would read the requirement of my team leader carefully, then I tried to make keywords specific as possible For example, my team leader wanted me to find some German vocabulary related to career, so I used the keyword “Vocabulary about work in German” to search on the search bar of Google If the result was not suitable, I would change the keyword and try again 2.2 Translation methods The translation methods I used were the translation methods by Newmark There are eight methods of translation based on Newmark: word-for-word, literal, faithful, semantics, adaptation, free, idiomatic and communicative Of these methods, I thought the communicative method was very suitable for me to translate German-learning materials because communicative translation tries to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership Therefore, communicative translation is social, simple, clear and brief, and always written in a natural and resourceful style, concentrated on the message and the main force of the text CHAPTER INTERNSHIP RESULTS Internship achievements 1.1 Theoretical knowledge IECS provided me with a great working environment, so I could consolidate and practice the knowledge I had studied at school, especially what I learned from the subject named an introduction to translation studies As I was assigned to translate documents and reference materials, I could apply translation methods by Newmark to my work Moreover, thanks to this class, I knew that an ideal translation needed to be accurate, beautiful and natural, thus I could avoid making mistakes and make a good translation 1.2 Practical knowledge 1.2.1 Communication skill During my three-month internship, I acknowledged the importance of communication in the workplace Communication helped people understand each other and made the work smooth and effective, so I tried a lot to hone my skill by communicating with my team leader by asking her questions about the work and interacting with staffs At first, I was pretty shy and timid, but spending time to study experience from the team leader helped me feel better Because I did my internship online, I did not have much experience communicating in person However, I did learn something interesting I realized that asking was crucial because it helped me to understand the work better and when asking, I needed to make sure that my questions were clear and easy to understand as well as using the right tone of voice After receiving the answers, I had to remember them carefully to avoid asking the same questions, which may be annoying Besides, observing is also a key to hone my communication skill By observing the conversation between staffs, I learned some useful tips, which I was not taught at school like using subheadings, lists or bullet points to break up your content into digestible chunks that looked less daunting on the screen, avoiding the use of CAPS and bold, Although I still make some mistakes, I think my communication skill becomes better after my internship 1.2.2 Technical skill After finishing my internship, my technical skill is improved a lot Technology was a great tool to help me complete my work, so I got to know how to use some useful websites, apps, and online dictionaries to complete my tasks such as using Google Drive to save my translations or using Collin dictionary to search German meaning of the word Furthermore, I had a chance to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel online a lot, so my Microsoft skills are also better Now, I can type fifty words per minute and know how to present text in Microsoft Word clearly Recommendation IECS is a great working environment for friendly, creative and dynamic people Therefore, when working here in the first week, I was overwhelmed by the working speed Employees at IECS were so productive and energetic In addition, I could not complete some tasks at first because I hesitated to ask questions about things that I did not understand Thus, after finishing my internship, I think it is essential for me to be more active in working and improve my ability to adapt to new environments CONCLUSION I had a lot of wonderful experiences after a three-month internship at IECS During this time, I could enhance my horizon by learning from the team leader and staffs about communication skills and technical skills They gave me much valuable advice to help me perform better In addition, translation tasks gave me a chance to practice As the result, I grasped how to make a good translation and realised my shortcoming that I was unable to use language flexibly, so now I am taking steps to improve it On top of that, I also learned how to manage time effectively Although the deadline was not tight, I had to allocate time properly to meet the deadline on time I took a lot of advantages when working as an intern at IECS Their environment is so friendly and dynamic However, I think they should have more designers in the Training Department, so they can make more beautiful and legible presentations for the students In conclusion, I am very grateful that IECS gave me a chance to work in Training Department with a very supportive team leader and staffs I also want to thank my instructor for helping me to complete this internship report Thanks to their help, I could gain a lot of valuable experience in working in a practical environment and get a chance to improve myself
