HaNoi Law University: INTERPRETING & TRANSLATING THEORY TOPIC Code of : Ethics of Interpreters Table of contents B A Code of ethics Prognosis of unexpected situations in interpretation C Interpreting in specialised area A CODE OF ETHICS Before Interpreting Assignment GOOD PREPARATIO N  Ascertain beforehand impending assignments, and undertake the necessary preparations  Doing research and collecting important information of the interpreting topic CULTURAL SENSITIVITY  Interpreters must respect the cultural differences of their clients PUNCTUALIT Y  Adhere to appointment times and deadlines  Notify supervisor if problems occur 2 During Interpreting Assignment 2.1 ACCURACY ● Convey with the greatest fidelity and accuracy, without addition, omission or alteration of the meaning 2.2 IMPARTIALITY ● Observe impartiality, remain free of preference or bias to any party involved ● Not engage in discussion, give advice or express personal opinions to any of the parties 2.3 AVOIDANCE OF CONFLICT ● If the interpreter feels there is any conflict of interest, it must be disclosed immediately ● Not conduct personal or other businesses while on an interpretation assignment 2 During Interpreting Assignment 2.4 MAINTAIN ROLE BOUNDARIES o Interpreters’ role is solely to interpret messages from the source language to target language and preserve as much of meaning as possible 2.5 ACCOUNTABILITY o Interpreters are responsible for the quality of interpretation provided and accountable to all parties and organizations engaging in the service 2.6 PROFESSIONALISM o Interpreters take responsibility for their work and conduct;
