Money is an international commodity that moves across continents almost as

fast as it moves across the street One of the things that lure money across

international borders is the rate of interest If interest rates are higher abroad than at home, American businesses and investors will move their money out of the USA and into countries with higher interest rates When domestic interest rates are higher, the flow of money will reverse kon ‘hind Wl rey hue

These international money flows are another constraint on monetary policy

Suppose the federal government wants to slow the economy by limiting money-

supply growth Such tight-money policies will tend to raise interest rates in the USA A higher interest rate is supposed to curb domestic investment and consumer

spending But those higher U.S interest rates will also be an attraction for foreign money People holding dollars abroad will want to move more money to the Unites States, where it can earn higher interest rates Foreigners will also want to exchange their currencies for dollars, again in order to earn higher interest rates

As international money flows into the United States, the money supply will expand more quickly than the government desired This will frustrate the government’s policy objectives and may force it to tighten the money supply even more Capital inflows will also tend to increase the international value of the dollar,

making it more difficult to sell U.S exports In sum, the intemationalization of money is one more problem the federal government has to worry about when it conducts monetary policy

What is the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome? Past research has suggested a

link to the Epstein-Barr virus, but now many scientists are questioning that connection New findings suggest that the Epstein-Barr virus is not a primary cause, but it may still trigger the illness The symptoms may be due to a variety of things,

rather than just one Still, some researchers are sticking with the idea of Epstein-Barr virus causing the illness They say that it is premature to make such a judgment

The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause Two geologists

from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggest that a large meteor hitting

the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all

over the world

The two geologists, Ronald Prinn and Bruce Fegley, calculated that if an ice- rich meteor weighing 12.5 million billion kilograms, hit the Earth, it would shock-

heat the atmosphere enough to produce huge amounts of nitrogen oxides This would

result, they say, in strongly acid rain around the world If the meteor were travelling more slowly, or if it were more rock-like in structure, this strongly acid rain would be

limited to a small area so that the world effect would be much less important However, other groups of researchers have suggested that volcanoes, rather than

meteors, could have produced these heavy doses of acid rain, but over a much longer period — over 10,000 years

Prinn and Fegley believe that their theory matches the pattern of animal and

plant life at the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago It is well known

from studying rock formations that it was at this time that dinosaurs and many other

groups of prehistoric animals died out Prinn and Fegley suggest one way in which

their theory might be tested Rock layers which have remained undisturbed since the

Cretaceous era could be examined to see if they show any sign of the effects of very large amounts of acid rain on metals which do not dissolve in water such as iron and

lead Such undisturbed rock layers are, however, very rare a?

1 What do scientists know about prehistoric dinosaurs? Aen tủ

A They were killed by one vast volcani¢ explosion BThey were present on the earth for about 10,000 years

&yThey could not co-exist with other animals

They died out 65 million years ago

2 What do Prinn and Fegley think would happen if a large piece of ice-rich meteor hit the earth at great speed?

A A huge volcano would be formed

12.5 million billion kg of nitrogen oxide would be produced (i y acidic rain would result all over the world

The heat would kili all living things in the area
