‘Carbon supported PC and PIRhSn catalysts were synthesized by microwave-polyol method in cethylene glycol solution and led forthe ethanol electeo-onklaion reaction The catalysts "were characterizedin terms of stricture, moephology and composition by employing XRD, STM, EDX and TGA techniques Unsupported Pt and PORSA nanoparticles were eharacterized by scanning tunnelling micruseapy (STM) The mean particle size and distribution were acquired from 4 few randomly chosen areas in the STM images containing about 150 particles, STM analysis teonfiame that both catalysts have rather unifontn particles smaller then 2 am for bout eatalysts The UC and PÍRhSBÍC calalysts were ehanscterized by X-ray pawaler diffraction analysis While XRD analysis of the PUC eatalyst revealed the main characteristic peaks of face eentered cubic erystal siature (fc) of platinum, XRD patterns ofthe PIRDSMC catalyst ae all besadened and anno be clearly resolved Electrochaalyie activity of the catalysts ware investigated by: potentindynamie and chronoamperomettic tests, PIRBSWC calalyst is highly active for the ethanol oxidaion with the ‘onset potential shifted for ~ 150) mV to more negative values and with currents nearly 2 times higher in comparison to PvC catalyst, The stability of catalyst was studied in the ehronoamperomettic experiments The PIRHSMC catalyst is evidently less poisoned then PUC catalyst The small particle sizes and homogeneous size distributions of both catalysts should he ateibuted to the advantages of microwave assisted modified polyol prosess in ethylene glyeol solution:The increased activity of PIRKSn/C catalyst in comparison to PUC catalyst is most probably promoted hy bifunctional mechanism and the electron effect of alloyed metals
