TABLE OF CONTENTS Nội dung I INTRODUCTION The reason to choose the theme The purpose of choosing the theme Object of the research Methods of the research New points of the research II CONTENTS Theoretical bases Practical bases a Toward teachers b Toward students * Measures in order to teach English through songs successfully * Procedure Effects of application III CONCLUSION IV REFERENCES skkn Page The Theme: “Using songs as a motivational way of teaching English for students - grade 11” I INTRODUCTION The reason to choose the theme The world is increasingly turning into a global zone where communicating becomes imperative As a consequence of this globalization, a common language should be spoken to enable interaction English is an essential means of communication between different places which bridges cultures and life styles However, “What we learn in a language course?” or, more importantly, “how we communicate with this language?” are two significant questions in language teaching As we see the magic of human beings is to use language not only to communicate but also to combine language sounds to create something that stirs the heart and mind that we called music Thus, in the native language teaching in general and teaching foreign language - English is very interesting and effective if we use some songs fit into the specific language In fact, most of these students are into singing, it was demonstrated in the details of their favorite music lessons Especially, if they can sing a song in English language not only brings excitement of learning that language knowledge but it is also etched forever in their minds Because of these concerns, I have boldly chosen the theme: “Using songs as a motivational way of teaching English for students - grade 11” with the purpose of improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning English to students grade 11 in my high school This is the main reason that I choose this theme The purpose of choosing the theme Motivation is vital in language learning process because it determines whether the action of foreign language acquisition is undertaken by the learner and to what extent he is ready to continue this effort This is the cause why so many scientists and researcher have devoted a great deal of attention to motivation Moreover, there are many ways that we can use to encourage the students to study English better, but I mention to the most effective one: Using songs of teaching English We can employ the use of songs, to enrich vocabularies, make grammar lessons and activities interesting, memorable, motivating and meaningful Object of the research - Students from class 11 D, E school year: 2021 - 2022 Methods of the research - Get experience from colleagues through their teaching - Search information to the website, articles or reference books - Using methods of observing, evaluating, comparing and synthesizing the situation and learning results of students after the periods using songs in lessons New points in the research English is taught through songs, but applying it to the general curriculum must be very limited Through the teaching process, I found that the method of teaching English through songs, has really affirmed its superior effectiveness This method not only brings success with English for children, English for high Completed by: Trinh Thu Hanh – Nga Son High School skkn The Theme: “Using songs as a motivational way of teaching English for students - grade 11” school students, but also promotes strengths with academic English that can be applied to all levels of education Teaching English through songs builds a love of foreign languages for all ages It will help learners improve their listening ability, practice, pronounce each word, know more new words and phrases, and avoid boredom while learning This helps students gain confidence in their own language, help them have an environment where they know how to use language freely, discover new things that is not found in books Completed by: Trinh Thu Hanh – Nga Son High School skkn The Theme: “Using songs as a motivational way of teaching English for students - grade 11” II CONTENTS Theoretical bases Jeremy Harmer, a writer of book in the field of teaching language name music “a powerful stimulus” for language learning He classifies the songs as one of the tools for teaching English intelligently It is a versatile technique, as it enables the teacher to present words graphically (printed song lyrics), verbally (listening to the song) and contextually (song lyrics ) at the same time The song can change the student’s mood and it can positively influence their stimulation for English learning The song can make a satisfactory connection between the world of leisure and the world of learning Students memorize vocabulary more willingly that is linked to real life situations, their own experience and interests, so they remember it for a longer period of time Of course, the song can also be used for practicing correct pronunciation, accent and intonation, as well as the grammar structures (Source: Jeremyharmer.wordpress.com) Practical bases a Toward teacher: Teenagers like something funny However, some teachers think that students must be serious in studying grammar only to the written test Therefore, they like to conduct structure based, formal rather than motivating activities in English lessons b Toward students: Most of my students not like English Students in my school major in natural science subjects They don’t like social science subjects English is not their favorite Solution * Preparation: a Toward students: - Students are expected to discover songs related to content of the lessons from different source of music b Toward teacher: - Prepare lesson content so that it is most logical - Prepare necessary equipments for teaching: projector, speaker, relevant songs from various source, prepared - activities which suitable for current lesson - Requires students to find outs songs related to lessons * Measures to teach English through songs successfully Planning for the use of songs in class - Define whether a lesson focusing on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, or a particular topic It will be very interesting if the teacher can relate the lesson to real life by using suitable songs at different occasion and festivals of the year For example, on the occasion of Christmas and New Year, the songs like “Jingle bells” and Completed by: Trinh Thu Hanh – Nga Son High School skkn The Theme: “Using songs as a motivational way of teaching English for students - grade 11” “Happy New Year” are quite good to motivate students Students can be quite excited when they feel what they learnt can apply to the real life Think about the language level of class - The language level of class will determine not only which songs teacher can use, but also what other activities – such as games or written exercises – teacher her will use to develop the lesson Lower levels will become extremely frustrated with fast-delivered lyrics, for instance, while simple repetitive lyrics might not be interesting for more advanced-level learners Finding the sources to find out the songs: - Teachers can find the songs to teach students from many sources as books, newspapers, magazines, disks, radio and especially, internet * Procedures: a Some activities using songs to motivate students to learn English Over the years teaching reform program - English 11 - standard program - I have redesigned some activities in using of songs of teaching as follows: Warm-up - Using music is considered as a nice lead-in to the lesson For example, the song Reaching The Stars by Janine Weigel, the official song of 18th ASIAD is played to provoke students to warm up Unit 12 – The Asian Games (grade 11) Changing the mood - Music can affect your students’ mood, so teacher can play some slower music to calm them down after stressful moment Alternatively, if the students had been seated almost silently during the previous lesson, it’s a good idea to play some lively music Grammar - Songs can also serve as a springboard for discussing a particular grammar point One way is to ask students to look through the lyrics and find some examples of a grammar structure If teaching adjectives, try to choose songs with lots of adjectives in the lyrics such as Len ka’s “Everything at once” If practicing, for instance, the relative clauses and the participles replacing relative clauses, students to listen and underline the relative clauses and the participles replacing relative clauses in the verses The song which works well with my students is “That’s why you go away” by Michael Learns To Rock Vocabulary and Pronunciation Music can also serve as a powerful tool in teaching new vocabulary and pronunciation Students not learn vocabulary in isolation, but in a specific context, with the words associated with it Teachers can use songs to teach vocabulary, pronunciation at the beginning of the lessons as warm - up activities or after the lessons like post parts to revise the vocabulary and pronunciation The song “Give me something to eat” to warm the lesson up or pre - teaching the words related to Halloween in unit – Celebration – Part A (grade 11) (Source: www.youtube.com) Completed by: Trinh Thu Hanh – Nga Son High School skkn The Theme: “Using songs as a motivational way of teaching English for students -
