Target 1: to acquaint to the education environment of English center - Target 2: to apply the specialized knowledge in the field of English language teaching - Target 3: to improve the weaknesses, and promote the my strengths of knowledge and skills - Target 4: to enhance the confidence and speaking skill with the students and their parents CHAPTER 2: ORGANIZATION 2.1 General information: The Educational Holding Company Chan Troi Moi was founded on December 10 th, 2015, operating parallel to the Holding Company AMA (Vietnam) On July 12 th, 2011, two official companies joined together in the new company named for Vietnam Sylvan Learning Sustained and work as a member of the Vietnam Investment Group (VIG) With the goal of learning fun, nurturing confidence and self-reliance on young children, Sylvan Learning has built up successfully the programs of STEM, English for studying abroad, and soft skills in the 21st century (Source: https://sylvanlearning.edu.vn/) Figure 1: Logo of the Vietnam Sylvan Learning 2.2 Courses: Sylvan Learning has given many courses for all ages and aims to widen the choices for the learners, such as: - Ielts, Toeic, KET, PET, Flyer, Mover, and Starter Cambridge (Source: https://sylvanlearning.edu.vn/) 2.3 The target, missions, and core values of Sylvan Learning: 2.3.1 Target: learning fun, nurturing confidence and self-reliance on the children 2.3.2 Missions: - To bring the true American education to the learners through the modern educational environment and the most effective teaching methods - To help the learners succeed in using English proficiently, fulfilling the desire to get the international certificate - To accompany with the learners during the study program to build a solid foundation for their successful future 2.3.3 Core values: - Education is key - Good teachers are inspiring teachers - Learning is personalized - Technology promotes the learning - The practical outcome is the most important element 2.4 Company Structure: Figure 2: The structure of Sylvan Learning (Source: The Human Resource Department of Sylvan Learning) There are five boys and three girls in the class, but there is no distinction between the gender The seat was organized in a square so teacher could always walk around and interact with all the students The communication between teachers, TA, and students was easier because the distance is quite close Therefore, the seating arrangement also makes sure that all students get the same attention Some students who were better actively attend into the lessons So the density of their activities is always superior to other friends As the result, teacher often had to encourage the others students in the class using smile, eye contact, or clapping when you speak On the other side, teacher also regularly used a facial expression to show his dissatisfaction with the boys who did talk to each other The time that the students practicing exercises is the time teacher used most interactions First, he reminded them to focus on doing homework After that, when he corrected the exercises in the class, he used smile when they answered correctly, or facial expression to motivate when the answers were wrong instead of correcting mistakes immediately so as not to reduce their confidence He regularly moved around the table to watch all the students and used the non-verbal language to interact with students such as eye contact, nodding or gesture if he wanted to give the suggestions to the students 5.1.4 Reflection: In my opinion, the most obvious thing of attending to the learners is the attitude The teacher appearing in front of the learners with a smile will make the atmosphere much more comfortable This will motivate them to stay ease as they study and not suffer too much pressures in the class Besides, calling the learners’ name regularly shows interest in their study to help them feel more concerned than being overlooked In addition, showing pleased to the learners is also very important during the lesson that is able to make them feel more proud and self-confident in their mind However, we are not only interested in the good or active learners, but also need special attention to the weaker ones Sometimes, children may feel discouraged at school, an encouragement from a teacher can make a lot of sense But this has to happen repeatedly over many days because some of the students are difficult to change their bias about English, or being forced to learn English, or they not want to hear the teachers Therefore, teachers often have to be patient to choose carefully the way to show themselves expression to the learners to avoid letting them feel ashamed One of the most common problems is that the classes of the children are often noisy, and they not usually focus on the lessons This requires severity as well as flexibility in the teacher's emotional expression We cannot yell at the kids because we are going to scare of put pressures on them instead of getting kids’ interests in classes Thus, we can allow students to participate in the pair or group activities accompanied by nonverbal actions to pull their focus on lessons naturally In concluding, attending to the learners is an important factor to support the study of the students, bring confidence to them and make the atmosphere comfortable in the classroom 5.2 Learner motivation: 5.2.1 Task objectives: For this lesson, I attended to the AT2 class of Mr David for one and a half of hour to pay attention to the behaviors of the learners during 90 minutes of lesson I have to consider the linkage of their behaviors and learning motivation 5.2.2 Data collection: - Teacher: Mr David - Level of class: AmazingTeen - Quantity of learners: - Ages: 12-14 - Textbook: Beyond A1+ (Student book and Work book) Table 1: The learners' motivation of AT2 class Student’s name Motivatio Learning behavior Comment n Alex High Participating Her goal is to go study enthusiastically activities of in the all abroad, so she always tries lesson, her best to improve her completing very well the English as much as possible teacher's requests Minne High Personal goals: IELTS-8.0 Although she was rather She 's very well-behaved and quiet, she was apprehensive interested at learning English and creative in giving ideas so she always focuses on every lessons Tony High He always got the leading in He always wants high points every skills, he always at school and at the center, so Figure 8: Thehis AT2 class raised handof Mr to David ask his learning objectives are questions in the classroom clear: Understanding clear to understand much more and getting high grades knowledge Ben Average He did not his homework He does not like English, so at home and in the class He he regularly shows up the did not participate too much depression, and fatigue in in the classroom, and even class He does not interact forgot bringing his books with teachers as well as classmates Vivian Low She did not go to school She is smart but she was today, just like she missed a forced to learn English that lot of meetings make her try to be absent from class And she even lost her books so she could not participate in the lessons 5.2.3 Data analysis: As the observation the learners’ behaviors in the class, as well as exchanging more information with the teacher and TA, through the above table, we found clearly that there is the obvious connection between the learning behaviors and the motivation of each of them High-motivated learners often express eager in learning, and attending actively in every activities of the lesson On the other hand, the learners who have lower motivation not often work in the classroom, always being discouraged and lazy Moreover, they not usually homework, as well as the practicing exercises in the classroom They are also able not to bring their books, try to find ways to avoid learning, or be absent The learners’ motivation is clearly influenced by learning targe, family, or their attitude The learners who direct to study abroad, or want to travel to the foreign countries in the future have always paid much attention to the acquisition of much more English knowledge Similarly, the students whose parents and relatives often use the foreign language are more likely to concern much more in English On the contrary, the students who not like English, of course, will have much lower motivation, especially, the learners who are pressured to participate in the classes at the English centers will regularly counter the learning and get the extremely low motivation among the learners in the classroom 5.2.4 Reflection: Motivation is the important factor influcing the English studying of each student Motivation can come from the individual verdict, family and the surrounding environment The behavior of each student in the class is also determined partly from their motivation and learning attitude Therefore, teachers should be more interested in each students, not only in class, but also in the students’ situation We can learn by observing their behaviors, interacting the students, or indirectly associating with their parents Having a clear understanding of the motivation will help us to explain the behavior of each student, especially the weaker students in the class On the other hand, teachers need different strategies for each group of students with different motivation With the higher one, we will provide additional knowledge and instruct them how they get the understanding from the lesson to achieve their personal goals However, we cannot treat all students alike because they will cause a sense of hatred for low-motivation students We cannot skip them, but we should change every piece of their prejudice The teachers' patience and encouragement will attract the students' attention and interest In conluding, the teacher 's success is measured by the capacity of developing the motivation of all the students to improve their English learning from the beginning 5.3 Learner levels: 5.3.1 Task objectives: For this lesson, I attended to the CK10 class of Ms Honeymay for one and a half of hour to pay attention to observe the different strategies of the teacher applied to the learners who is in different levels of English 5.3.2 Data collection: - The teachers put him into a pair vocabulary He sometimes made with other students at the lower some noises and did not pay level attention in the lesson 5.3.3 Data analysis: Through the class of Ms Honeymay, we can divive six students into five levels from to The level No.1 means that the learners’ English learning has some problems that lead the them to be inadequate Meanwhile, the level No.5 represents to the highest quality of the learners’ English skills Based on the experience and observation in class, Ms Honeymay could identify each group of the students at every level This would take a lot of time to determine and verify, then she built up the specific strategies for each group For example, with the students who were weak at the listening skill, she was going to speak more slowly and clearly each word of the speech And if the other students were weak about the sentence structure, communication, she was going to give them chances to practice more She always noticed to group students at different levels into some pairs to help each other According to observations during the class time, although the students at the lower levels have their English skills that were not really good, but the attitude was very active The comfortable and cheerful atmosphere of class was one of the remarkable elements that Ms Honeymay successfully created She was always maintaining the competitive spirit, but there were the regular encouragements for each student And finally, she actually succeeded in completing the lesson of the class with many students at the various levels 5.3.4 Reflection: The important meaning of teaching is to transmit the knowledge with the desire to the learners, and allow them to receive in the most natural way In modern times, however, a class with many students in different English levels is inevitable We cannot only pay attention to the good students and take them to be a standard for the class As the result, this will unconsciously put the pressure into the weaker students They may be discouraged, or they may think that they cannot as the excellent students Besides, shouting in the class or telling parents are not good ideas that will surely make the situation worse Observing and learning to identify each learner at a defined level are essential to the teachers Understanding the level and basic of each student will help the teachers be able to provide the specific and appropriate tactics for them Furthermore, patience and encouragement are the integral parts of applying to students who are weaker in any aspect Teachers should spend much more time with the students and let themselves be better by working with some better students The teacher's qualitification and knowledge are certainly the important elements Actually, by observing the teachers at the center, I realized that the learning strategies for each student are the key that connects to the students to increase the effectiveness of every session CHAPTER 6: SELF-EVALUATION 6.1 Difficulties and Benefits: 6.1.1 Difficulties: Because of lacking of experience in the professional environment, I met some difficulties in the early days Supporting and managing learners at the age of infant required much patience and effort Some of them are in particular cases like neurological problem or children who did not like learning English In these cases, interacting with them was very challenging and I spent lots of time to get used to them Besides, my task of communicating with parents also met some omissions because I have not yet fully grasped the situation of each learners in the class The customer care task involved in many kinds of texts, documents that I have not been contacted before The amount of information for hundreds of students required the extremely high accuracy In addition, I sometimes lost my patience when faced with a large number of deadline in a short period of time 6.1.2 Benefits: The most valuable benefit is that I could experience in the practical educational environments, along with the conscientious teachers and professional staff I have learned how to lead the matter and interact with learners and foreign teachers I also had the opportunity to apply my English skills learned at the university into the TA task Finally, I practiced to be much more patient in supporting students at all ages In the other hand, I have new experiences in the customer care, because I have ve never done up to now I have learned more about communicating with learners, their parents as well as coworkers at the center 6.2 Strengths and weaknesses: 6.2.1 Strengths: - Self-confidence in teaching and associating with people - Plan the specific plans in every assignment - Complete on time of all assignments given - Using competently all the tools of teaching and supporting devices - English knowledge conforms to the TA task 6.2.2 Weaknesses: - Lose the patience in some circumstances - Manage not efficiently the work of TA group - Manage time not efficiently in teaching, sometimes taking more time than expected - The speaking and listening skills were not really good in some cases 6.3 Solutions: - Practice the patience and organize the plans in a specific and scientific way - Pay attention to the coordinating skill - Improve the Speaking and Listening skills as well as time management to prepare better for the future job CHAPTER 7: CONCLUSION 7.1 Conclusion: Thanks to the efforts myself as well as the support of your teachers in the faculty of foreign language and center’s staff, I successfully completed the internship period as expected Because the center created all the conditions and supporting equipments, I have learned and gained many experiences for myself from the difficulties facing every day As the result, the internship period has given me the large amount of valuable experiences as well as the opportunity to be exposed to the professional educational environment I have been applying the knowledge I learned in university and seeing my strengths and weaknesses to set some solutions to improve my knowledge for future work Over the seven-week period, I have reached some targets, such as: - Target 1: Get used to the work of TA as well as the customer care service at the center - Target 2: Apply expertise and professional skills to the teaching task - Target 3: Improve English skills when working with foreign teachers - Target 4: I have not improved the speaking skill in communicating with foreign teachers as well as sometimes to stumble while teaching learners After finishing my internship, I need to make a specific and clear plan for myself in improving the skills of listening and speaking, especially in the next semester Moreover, I have to prepare carefully for the target of English Ielts because I realized that I needed to make a lot of effort in my current English to meet my own aspirations 7.2 Recommendation: For the center, I find that the center should spend much more time as well as the interest in teaching Grammar Because I noticed that most of the students had to struggle to study Grammar because of lacking of lesson time The curriculum has been concerning about the reading and listening part, so the student did not have enough time for Speaking Besides, I think that the preparation of the lesson plan needs the additional support from the teacher to have a unification between TA and teachers For the Hoa Sen University, I suggested that the faculty should added some soft skills such as communicating with people, making plans, coordinating works, and using computers Because I noticed that some of my classmates were actually struggling with their computers In addition, the university should provide additional support for students to contact with the enterprises, since students sometimes have difficulties to apply at the beginning of the internship REFERENCES -
