Contemporary Psychology "Albert Bandura is justifiably viewed as the originator of self-efficacy a construct that now rightfully involves numerous investigators who operate in different areas Self-Efficacy in Changing Societies is a winner." Norman Garmezy, Professor of Psychology Emeritus, University of Minnesota " a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners alike stands out as a remarkably successful effort at bridging the worlds of theory, research, and applied concerns, and forecasting important directions for future investigations and practice." David L DuBois, Journal of Adolescence " anyone intersted in contemporary applications of self-efficacy theory will find this to be an enormously useful resource." Richard E Watts, Journal of Cognitive Psycho-theory A M Rosenthal, Thirty-eight witnesses (1964) This 1964 non-fiction (billed on the cover as "classic journalism") is more of a thesis than a book, despite being written by A.M Rosenthal, the former editor of THE NEW YORK TIMES The subject matter is an important, not a true crime book per se, but more of a sociological mediation on the "thirty-eight" witnesses In March 1964 Kitty Genovese was coming home for work early in the morning when she was stabbed repeatedly over thirty minutes, with none of the neighbors, who heard the screaming, calling the police This has been referred to in sociology as "the bystander effect" or "Genovese Syndrome," a social psychological phenomenon When the book was written the perpetrator was in jail but there was no more information; basic internet digging shows that he is still in prison and eligible for parole in 2013; but the book is not about the crime itself but about the apathy of the witnesses Arguments are pondered as to why, but this seems to be a turning point in the "urban jungle" where the stoop neighborliness of the 1950s ends, just as Camelot did months earlier Because we know more is 2012 than Rosenthal knew in 1964 the book lacks an all-encompassing view For instance, we now know about dialing 911 and emergency services, but Rosenthal goes on a lengthy and tedious - aside about how emergency calls are routed in other major cities, from Atlanta to Seattle The book has photos of the neighborhood with diagrams of where the multiple stabbings happened The book isn't about Genovese - she was merely the victim in this Big Apple morality tale An interesting read, though dry and a bit academic, but a must for fellow Sociologists Diane Tillman, Living Values Activities for Young Adults (2008) As pervasive violence shatters our nation, the call for values echoes through headlines and school hallways as educators, parents and children become increasingly concerned and affected The Living Values series offers a variety of experiential activities for teachers and parents to help them teach children and young adults to develop twelve critical social values: cooperation, freedom, happiness, honesty, humility, love, peace, respect, responsibility, simplicity, tolerance and unity In each book, these twelve values are explored using age-appropriate lessons that incorporate group discussions, reading, quiet reflection time, songs, artwork and action-oriented activities These lessons are already in use in more than 1,000 locations in sixty-two countries Pilot results indicate that students are enthusiastic and teachers report a decrease in aggressive behavior and more motivated students The Living Values Educational Program was born when twenty educators from around the world gathered at UNICEF Headquarters in New York in 1996 to discuss the needs of children and how to better prepare students for lifelong success These global educators identified the curriculum and the program was ready for piloting in February of 1997 Vuong Hoang Yen, Family’s role in educating etiquette for teenagers in Hanoi (2012) The thesis reveals the situation of the role of families in educating behaving culture for children during their adolescence in Hanoi and basic factors leading to the current situation based on the government’s current ideology Therefore, the author suggests some solution to the solution to enhance the role of families in educating behaving culture The topic of the thesis isn’t new; yet in a rapidly developing society like Hanoi, this topic is practical and relevant to Vietnamese culture and thinking of good behaviors Also, it helps the government orient public opinions on this subject, helps families determine appropriate educating methods and raise the awareness of the role of families in teaching good behaviors Sociological concepts in this thesis are quite familiar, readers without specialization in sociology may gain better understanding of behaving culture thanks to this work Bui Duc Trong, Traffic culture of high school students in Hanoi (2010) Citizen traffic participation’s actual situation is currently raising many problems with which many scientists including psychologists need to deal, especially those problems related to young’s traffic participation attitude and behaviors The topic of the thesis raises a problem and requires the author to suggests solutions to this This thesis provides readers a better understanding about the current situation through the results of the survey on three high schools in Hanoi Besides, it also surveyed adults’ attitude, student's traffic participation objective behaviors and used them as the basis for comparison and research issue clarification Therefore, the author suggest some advice to better students’ attitude towards participating traffic participation Along with the subject is high school students in Hanoi, the author choses three objects are teachers, police officers and parents Thus, this varies the range of readers and give readers different points of view to the topic Also, this thesis systematized some theories about the problem of behavior in psychology, such as the concept of attitude, the character, structure and mechanism of attitude, which added some further clarification to basic concepts such as traffic participation, attitude to traffic participation III Main concepts and variables Some basic definitions of the topic 10 1.1 Attitude - Attitude plays an important role in predicting behavior of a person A person who has the positive attitude will tend to join in activities in a more positive way - Attitude is a well-known definition in psychology and others science Some typical definitions of attitude as follows: - According to western and Russian psychologists such as F.Znaniecki, Newcom, V.N.Miaxisev…, attitude is the conscious reflection of individual which is shown to outside through behavior and gesture and it directs in the evaluation of situation not adaptation [6] - From the psychological dictionary of Nguyen Khac Vien 1991, in front of some particular subjects, some people have immediate reaction, receive in difficult or easy way, accept or oppose as they are the created psychological structure which direct for reaction - According to Vietnamese dictionary 1999, attitude is the overall outside behavior of thinking, emotion with somebody or some things (example the bossy attitude, unpleasant attitude, silent attitude, ) [5] [7] - In this topic, we consider: Attitude is the reaction, evaluation of a person about the subject, object, thing that are expressed through cognition, emotion, behavior and it takes the role of directing for behavior 1.2 Apathy - Currently there is no clear definition of apathy, however, the word ‘‘apathy’’ appears with dense frequency on the newspapers, presentations about lifestyle of youth - In this topic, we consider ‘‘apathy’’ as the insensible attitude in emotion, indifferent, cold to others and community and it lacks of respect and responsibility to surrounding things, only cares about personal self and interests 1.3 Apathetic attitude - Life contains many situations that we may fall in difficulties and stucks, may in need for support and care However, there is not a small part of daily stories nowadays about the insensible attitude of a group of people towards things, works, other people when they are in need for help That’s when we call ‘‘apathetic attitude’’ 11 Apathetic attitude is understood as the attitude of one person or group of people - who have insensible attitude, not express emotion, not take action to people, things, responsibilities that the are expected to do, social phenomena that they witnessed 1.4 Social issue The development process of society arised a lot of conflicts and noticeable activities In this topic, we consider society issue as matters and phenomena that arises in social life which has effects to advantage of inhabitant community 1.5 Apathetic attitude to social issue In this topic, we consider apathetic attitude to social issue as negative evaluating - reaction of individual or group of individuals who are not relevant, responsible, supportive to social issues and people in difficulties It is expressed through cognition, emotion, behavior and behavioral direction of that individual In contrary the apathetic attitude to social issue is the considerate, responsible one - to society when they try to care and help without waiting for reciprocation or repayment In this topic, we only research the outstanding social issues that are confirmed by - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism including news about culture, sports, economic, education, health within and outside the country IV Research question and hypothesis After literature review, we can see that there are still many missing points the apathy topic, especially about cases in Vietnam and among high school students With our limited resources of time and human resources, we try to discover some questions which we think are the most necessary and answerable At the same time, we also provide possible hypotheses for later testing in the research What are the reasons behind high school students’ apathy? Hypothesis: High school students’ apathy stems from - Themselves: they lack of compassion and empathy, overestimate individualism and only live for themselves - Family: while some parents put too much pressure on their children to have excellent academic performance, which leaves no time for them to care for social issues, others fail to become a role model for their kids 12 - School: many schools are only focusing on delivering an excessive amount of academic knowledge yet have not paid adequate attention to nurturing students’ morality Besides, some teachers not have considerate behaviours, which might instil into students negative lifestyle - Society: the development of the information technology has fundamentally changed how we communicate and think, which partly contributes to students’ apathy Moreover, the prevalence of frauds has discouraged people from caring for others What can be done to eliminate students’ apathy to social issues? Hypothesis: To change behaviours, it is necessary to first adjust attitudes Hence the solution to students’ apathy should root from changing their attitude We suggest the collective effort from family, school and society and most importantly the students themselves as a measure - Family: Parents should nurture their children with love and care along with discussing with them the social issues - Schools: Schools should put more focus on nurturing students’ morality, for example by opening clubs, information sharing sessions, etc for students to discuss about social issues and teachers should try to behave considerately - Society: News about moral role models who help other people to encourage similar actions should be spread while apathetic ones should be condemned - Students themselves: Self-education is important Students should established their own living principles, constantly review themselves on it to adjust their behaviours To test our hypotheses, we use such methodologies as presented in V V Survey Questionnaire - For student Dear students !
