Building Bridges 2019 Casper College Foundation and Alumni Association • Annual Report The Bridge Builder By Will Allen Dromgoole (1860-1934) An old man going a lone highway, Came, at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide Through which was flowing a swollen tide The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide “Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You’re wasting your time in building here; Your journey will end with the closing day, You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you this bridge at evening tide?” The builder lifted his old gray head; “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followed after me to-day A youth whose feet must pass this way This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!” Our Foundation Staff and Board of Directors 2018-2019 Casper College Foundation Staff (left to right): Ann Dalton, associate director of development; Becky Wise, foundation coordinator; Danica Sveda, associate director of donor and alumni relations; Denise Bressler, executive director; Katie Schwieger, data assistant; and Jeannine Earl, chief financial officer Board of Directors John Jorgensen, President Craig Valdez, Vice President Lynnde Colling, Secretary-Treasurer Denise Bressler, Executive Director Sally Belcher Darren Divine, Casper College president Kathy Dolan, Casper College board of trustees representative Tim Kugler, Casper College board of trustees representative Judge W Thomas Sullins Bob Sutter Mark Zaback Kendall Bryce Jennifer McDowell Mary Lynn Shickich Stacia Vigneri Judge Catherine Wilking Kermit Wille Lea Schoenewald, Casper College Alumni Association president Jim Thorpen Every donor helps build a bridge to someone else’s future It is our pleasure to present the Casper College Foundation’s Annual Report for the fiscal year 2018-2019 Because of the generosity of our donors, we have another year of good news to share It was a year of change at the foundation George Bryce and Dick Wheeler, two of our longtime board members, retired from the board after serving 30 and 21 years, respectively We miss their wisdom We were thrilled to welcome to our board Judge Catherine Wilking, Jim Thorpen, and Kendall Bryce Directly in the office, Linda Nix retired as assistant director of communications, Paulann Doane retired as executive director, Jeannine Earl was hired as chief financial officer, and Denise Bressler was hired as the sixth foundation executive director Our support of Casper College and its students remains as strong as ever We awarded 801 individual students with more than $1.5 million in scholarships and supported Casper College with over $2.4 million in program support This equates to almost $1,900 per scholarship recipient and $800 in program support per full-time student Our net assets still grew by $2.9 million, even after providing the college and its students with all this support This growth is from both our investment revenue and our donors’ charitable giving Once again, we honored our donors at our Second Annual Donor Luncheon Well over 100 donors and scholarship recipients attended this wonderful event We heard from two students who both inspired us and tugged at our heartstrings We connected our students with our donors and showed them just how much their philanthropy helps In the future, we believe that many of these students will come to the luncheon as donors themselves Dr Darren Divine President, Casper College Denise Bressler Executive Director, Casper College Foundation John Jorgensen President, Casper College Foundation This year’s issue highlights one of the foundation’s first major donors and the buildings built with those donations The buildings on campus were built for the students of that time and also for current and future students Our past donors had a vision for the future Because of them, we have a beautiful campus to learn and work in The “Building Bridges: A Timeline” in the center of this issue shows the buildings as they have been added to the campus over the years We hope you enjoy learning about each building and, like us, wonder what the future might bring A Community of Support Aerial view of Casper College campus, looking east, 2019 Aerial view of Casper College campus, looking south, before 1964 Statement of Financial Position A Community of Support Walking the manicured landscapes of the Casper College campus, it’s easy to forget that the college was once filled with prairie grass and sagebrush A concrete “C” marked the spot where teenagers would park their car and watch the twinkle of the city lights below Now instead of a C, the Harry T Thorson Institute of Business houses students studying business This beautiful campus did not grow out of the ground by itself; it was built through the tenacity, dedication, and generosity of an entire community After leaving the third floor of Natrona County High School, the first two buildings erected on the campus were the administration building and a vocational unit The administration building had 20 classrooms, a bookstore, library, student union, administrative offices, and a gymnasium By the fall of 1955, enrollment had doubled Renamed the Leroy Davis Liesinger & Lulu B Liesinger Administration Building in 1978, it was bustling with students, eager to continue on their educational path Liesinger Hall remains on campus and is still used for classroom instruction, as well as other campus functions Today, the campus boasts 33 buildings and additions The college has continually improved the offerings and spaces to enhance educational opportunities for students The college continues to grow after the instrumental work of visionaries like Tilghman Aley, Ph.D In the 18 years Aley served as the college Music Building dedicated 2013 president, 17 buildings were funded and built on campus The most recent growth was under the guidance of President Walter H Nolte, Ph.D Donors, with the help of the State of Wyoming and the Casper College Foundation, saw five buildings added to campus The Residence Hall adds updated living space for students The Inga Thorson Early Childhood University/Union building dedicated 2014 Learning Center provides an enriched learning environment for college students’ children to receive important early education while parents attend their classes The Music Building moved to a stateof-the-art facility that houses the impressive Wheeler Concert Hall for the community and students to enjoy cultural and entertaining Residence Hall dedicated 2011 events The Walter H Nolte Gateway Center was built with student ease in mind by making it easier to enroll and apply for financial aid and scholarships with minimal effort There would not be a Casper College success story without its community of support A community that believes in educational opportunities from technical training to the humanities and fine arts The community has made it possible for thousands of students to improve their lives Students that range from young to old give back through their work every day and by sharing their talents with others as they, too, join the growing community of support ASSETS 2019 2018 Cash and cash equivalents Investments Receivables Note receivable Casper College Assets held in Fred and Babe Goodstein: Investing in the Community Fred Goodstein came to Casper in 1922 with his new wife, Ida (Babe) An ambitious businessman, he started American Pipe and Supply in 1923 by buying surplus material and salvage equipment in Wyoming’s oil fields By 1965, he had purchased Northern Gas Company, Northern Utilities Company, and was one of the founders of Trigood Oil Company He owned and developed several downtown Casper properties that still remain: the Petroleum Building, the Goodstein Building, and the Sears and Roebuck Building He shared his success with the town where he made his fortune Fred and Babe were committed to making their home a better place to live Fred’s first gift to the college in 1966 was to complete the construction of The Goodstein Foundation Library, several years after it’s construction the college library The Goodstein Foundation Library finished construction in the fall of 1967 The dedication ceremony had 1,500 visitors to marvel at the newest building on campus Babe added another donation to the library by commissioning noted sculptor Jason Seley who created an avant-garde sculpture in front of the library “The Talisman” is still a prominent sculpture on the Casper College campus Babe also worked quietly in the community, donating her time to the hospital and the children’s home After some time, the college began making plans for an expansion to the library due to a growing campus and student population Once again, Fred answered the call and donated an astounding $1 million At the time, it was the Ida (Babe) Goodstein largest private donation Fred Goodstein ever made to any Wyoming college The Casper College Foundation matched Goodstein’s funds, making it the foundation’s largest donation at the time The addition to the library was dedicated in 1989 It added 14,000 square feet to the library as well as improved access for disabled patrons at the street entrance, a computer lab, and increased the size of the book collection Wyoming’s former member of the U.S House of Representatives, Teno Roncalio, said, “How sweet it is to see a man give it where he made it Fred Goodstein is Wyoming’s nobleman.” The Goodsteins didn’t stop there In 1976, the Goodstein Foundation financed the construction and furnishing of the Goodstein Visual Arts Center When Fred was presented with the plans for the new building, he simply said, “Whatever the college needs, that’s what we want to do.” The building was completed in 1977 Today, the library houses a 70,000 volume collection of materials selected specifically for the students and faculty of Casper College The book collection is supplemented with more than 400 databases and 1,200 electronic journals Modern updates also include group and private study rooms, two computer labs, computers for student checkout, and an IT help desk The student Veterans Center and the Casper College Western History Center are also located in the library The library and its programs continually evolve, serving a changing student population The Goodstein Visual Arts Center, by contrast, has struggled to keep up with growing class sizes and modern art techniques What was once a gleaming, stylish piece of architecture has become cramped and outdated Space is one of the most pressing concerns Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards require areas that are adequate for a student to operate a piece of equipment while other students can move around them safely The faculty strives to offer classes while staying within health and safety codes The State of Wyoming has agreed to provide matching funds to Casper College for a new visual arts building In the near future, Casper College will break ground on a larger, modern building that will alleviate space constraints and keep the students in a safe environment with updated equipment The Goodsteins gave and built with an eye to the future Fred believed that Casper should be the “nerve and supply center” of Wyoming He invested accordingly not only in significant endeavors such as the Petroleum Building but also to residents who would benefit from education, then share their talent with the community Former Casper College President Tilghman (Tim) Aley, Ph.D., said it best, “Wyoming always will be a better place in which to live as a result of the generosity of Fred Goodstein We are fortunate to have people who have prospered here and who feel responsibility for the betterment of our state.” Fred and Babe are only two of the thousands of donors, large and small, who have made an enormous impact on Casper and Wyoming Every donor that gives, builds a bridge to someone else’s future “The Talisman,” an avant-garde sculpture, was commissioned by Ida Goodstein DESIGN NARRATIVES
