Professor reappointment at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill Prior to my arrival at MAHEC, I was honored to complete my Family Medicine Residency training at The University of Virginia and my Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill I have had the opportunity to participate in various research projects and initiatives during my time at MAHEC in Asheville, NC I’m excited about what the future holds as it pertains to research and our primary care sports medicine fellowship here in Asheville The pillars of our research initiatives include that of quality improvement, national case review and presentation, collaborative writing, and clinical research Quality improvement and evaluation is critical to the success of any process I have individually and collectively from a practice standpoint had the opportunity to be a part of multiple quality improvement projects As our local musculoskeletal expert I had the opportunity to review our imaging protocol, collaborating with fellow faculty and x-ray technicians to provide updated scanning indications and sequences Collectively, MAHEC has a very vigorous quality improvement structure and as with other faculty within the department we constantly review our processes as it pertains to quality metrics These metrics include Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Diabetes Mellitus, Preventative Screening and Immunization compliance among others I am involved in the data collection as well as analysis of these processes In addition to my work at MAHEC I also see patients at Asheville Orthopaedic Associates, an affiliate of Mission Health, where I provide clinical services as a non-operative orthopaedist While there, I have conducted an educational workshop and training session for our nurses and medical assistants on sterile technique I also serve as the medical director for the Mission Hospital Sports Medicine program, where I oversee the clinical services of our 15+ athletic trainers, high schools, a university and three semi-professional athletic clubs Through my oversight and direct guidance I have fashioned our medication management plan which provides a protocol for medication administration delivered by our providers With the assistance of our athletic trainers and program administrators I have also developed a practitioner guide for our athletic trainers and implemented medical provider competency checklists With my affiliations with the hospital I have had the opportunity to develop our hospital outpatient traumatic brain injury algorithm and have recently been named the physician liaison for the hospital’s traumatic brain injury Care Process Model (CPM) Our Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship has been increasingly active with research initiatives at a local, regional and national level I write multiple educational pieces for local race-director blogs throughout the year I also write multiple educational pieces throughout the year for Mission Hospital’s monthly magazine that reaches 17+ counties throughout Western North Carolina On a yearly basis we as a fellowship formally present medical case presentations at a collaborative sports medicine summit that involves various fellowship programs from North Carolina and South Carolina This has served to further our communication and collaboration among various programs across the state(s) From a national perspective we annual represent at our national sports medicine conference, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine This year we collectively presented posters/oral presentations as a department and look to expand our presence in the coming years These presentations are peer reviewed, accepted and later published in the organization’s online journal Asheville is very fortunate to have a very vibrant sports medicine community and some outstanding fellowshiptrained providers who maintain academic contribution to the sports medicine knowledge base This past year I was a co-author with our two primary care sports medicine fellows as well as one of our orthopaedic adjunct community faculty members in writing two book chapters for an orthopaedic text book, Miller et al Essential Orthopaedics I am also a recurring chapter writer for DeLee & Drez’s Orthpaedic Sports Medicine: Principles and Practice journal I perform regular manuscript article reviews for Sports Health Journal and am responsible for the concussion section of the Family Physician’s Inquiries Network (FPIN) I intend for my scope of academic writing to continue with yearly book chapters as well as article reviews and composition This past academic year, MAHEC was privileged to add an additional primary care sports medicine faculty whose passion is that of research and academics From this addition, our fellowship now has developed a formal research curriculum and longitudinal education plan Additionally, I am in the data collecting stage of two ongoing collaborative projects with the University of North Carolina- Asheville The first being that on the Fitness, Performance and Body Composition of female collegiate basketball players The second being that on athlete Vaughan -16biometrics and bio-neurofeedback As we continue to gather data, we look forward to publishing this work as well as adding additional projects and articles relative to this body of knowledge I have been greatly pleased with the progress I and our sports medicine fellowship has made over the past years I look forward to continuing to expand and further hone my research interests in quality improvement, case review and presentation, writing and clinical research TEACHING STATEMENT It is with great excitement that I write this letter of intent to apply for Clinical Assistant Professor reappointment at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill Prior to my arrival at MAHEC, I was honored to complete my Family Medicine Residency training at The University of Virginia and my Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill I’m excited about what the future holds as it pertains to teaching here in Asheville My primary role at MAHEC is acting as the Program Director for the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Additionally within the Division of Family Medicine I act as the Sports Medicine Director for our Family Medicine Residents Our collaborative teaching network in the region for our students, residents and fellows includes an outstanding group of interdisciplinary educators These educators teach in both a didactic as well as a clinical setting within a longitudinal format Prior to my arrival in Asheville, MAHEC had a non-ACGME accredited sports medicine fellowship which served as a year of additional training for graduating family medicine residents interested in the field of sports medicine Upon my arrival we achieved and have maintained accreditation for our primary care sports medicine fellowship for two fellows We will be graduating our third class of fellows this year, are currently undergoing our ACGME self-study, and look forward to what is in store for the coming years Our fellowship academic plan has morphed and changed based on learner and teacher feedback We initially reserved a weekly four-hour block of time for didactic and practical hands-on ultrasound and procedural training Over the ensuing years we have changed this to now include a dedicated one-hour block on a weekly basis that facilitates community involvement and attendance Community preceptors and teachers as well as core faculty and fellows provide didactic lectures facilitating an outstanding interdisciplinary experience Our lectures tend to be geared towards our audience with a combined lecture series that includes physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and students In addition to this one-hour block we have reserved a weekly 30-minute teaching session focusing on imaging management and interpretation (x-ray and ultrasound) for students, residents, and fellows Each week fellows are provided a one-hour block for board preparation and question review as well as an additional one-hour one-on-one sports medicine core faculty teaching session on a predetermined topic of choice The beginning of the academic year for our fellows has a greater focus on research and project development as we prepare for our regional and national conferences From a student and resident perspective we strive to incorporate our residents into the weekly fellowship didactic experiences All faculty, residents and students are encouraged to attend our weekly didactic sessions that are laid out multiple weeks-months in advance Resident-focused didactics including a casting/splinting workshop, a joint injection workshop, as well as individualized didactics on a quarterly basis are provided during Wednesday afternoon joint sessions Though we not formally have a Sports medicine track available to our residents, we afford additional learning experiences and elective experiences for interested residents and students Residents rotate with various community musculoskeletal providers that have been deemed high-yield to their learning experience The core of their learning experience occurs within the Family Medicine Department through our internal Primary Care Sports Medicine clinic Residents are required to participate in a community athletic coverage event whether that be a mass participation event or continuity game coverage We are currently in the process of developing our POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) curriculum as well as our Simulation Center goals and objectives We are very involved in the local community providing educational talks to athletic groups through various athletic venues In addition to our local teaching we have incorporated multiple additional regional collaborative individualized learning experiences including a fellowship orientation experience with Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, an ultrasound immersion course with Moses Cone Hospital and the Greensboro AHEC, an annual sports Vaughan -17medicine summit with UNC-Chapel Hill and Greenville Health System, as well as additional research and journal club opportunities with multiple fellowships across the Carolinas These opportunities continue to grow and provide a vibrant learning environment I personally also participate on the regional board for BIANC (Brain Injury Association of North Carolina) and am on their education committee I have assisted with development and implementation of educational modules for traumatic brain injury awareness for both medical personnel as well as the general public In addition, I serve as a regularly invited lecturer for a regional ultrasound course and have served as the Educational Chair and spoken at many local and regional orthopaedic meetings regarding sports medicine-related topics As I move forward, I look forward to expanding MAHEC’s educational footprint into the surrounding region and states, facilitating collaboration, teaching the teacher, and providing innovative and evidence-based educational platforms
