5/17 5/20 - 5/23 5/19 - 5/22 5/17 - 5/20 5/16 - 5/19 Undergrad Commencement 5/19 (Sat) 5/25 (Sat) 5/24 (Sat) 5/22 (Sat) 5/21 (Sat) Issues in 2011-12: 1) Same start of school as 2009-10 and 2010-11, before Labor Day) 2) JT starts on Tuesday Jan (with classes meeting Tues through Fri that week) 3) Because of the early Jan Term start, the end of school/graduation comes early this year Issues in 2012-13: 1) Because of early Labor Day, school starts on Tues 9/4 (arrival and move-in implications for Labor Day) Issues in 2013-14: 1) Because of early Labor Day, school starts on Tues 9/3 (arrival and move-in implications for Labor Day) 2) Late Easter leaves only weeks after the break before final exams and a long weeks before the break—but we don’t really have any choice about that if our spring break is timed to Easter Opportunities: A) The loss of the fall midterm break day (Friday, mid-October) may need to be addressed Would it benefit the College to go a week later in the fall term, reinstate the Friday mid-October break, and cancel classes for the Mon and Tues of Thanksgiving week, using those days for College-wide purposes such as WASC planning, diversity training for faculty and staff, core curriculum implementation meetings for all faculty, etc The decision to this for 2011-12, 12-13, and 13-14 would coincide nicely with the WASC process and with the approaching College campaign and celebration of the 150-year anniversary It would also allow for longer term planning for College-wide issues and make for a more academically focused period after Thanksgiving (two weeks before exams rather than one, with time for students to work on papers during the Thanksgiving break) To implement this new schedule would require starting the week before Labor Day each year, no matter when Labor Day fell In two of the years (2012-13 and 13-14) this would mean starting Monday August 27/26 respectively B) A parallel all-College day for faculty and staff could be identified in the spring, if we made the Monday after Easter that day It is currently a travel day for students, but faculty and staff could be asked to use it as a “work” day Academic Calendar issues for 2011-2014 The Council of Deans has already reviewed the proposed calendar and made its recommendations, leaving some issues unresolved UEPC is asked to review the academic implications of the proposed calendar coming from the Deans After the UEPC looks at the issues and makes its recommendation, the calendar goes to the Academic Senate for review After the Senate makes its recommendations, the calendar goes to the Provost and the President, who make the final decisions about calendar dates taking into account input from all those who have reviewed it previously So, your work is to make recommendations, not a final decision There are some as yet unresolved issues that affect the academic operations of the College, and I have tried to summarize them below I For the last two three-year cycles, the practice has been to start classes BEFORE Labor Day when Labor falls on Sept 4-7 and AFTER Labor Day when it falls on Sept 1-3 This compromise is based on how late in December the fall terms runs when Labor Day fall on Sept 4-7 Also, it is much more difficult for the “move-in” process to take place over the Labor Day weekend than the week earlier The DRAFT calendar presented to you assumes that we follow past practice If we do, then classes would start before Labor Day in 2011 and after Labor Day in 2012 and 2013 Issue #1: Should we alter the past practice for the start of classes? TUG start date: 2011 2012 2013 Mon before Labor Day Tues after Labor Day 8/29 9/6 8/27 9/4 8/26 9/3 Issue #2: The mid-semester holiday in the fall (usually around Oct 15) was ended so that the Weds before Thanksgiving could be a holiday (travel considerations for students) A suggestion has been made that we need to re-establish the mid-semester holiday, but not return to Weds classes before Thanksgiving How important is the mid-Oct holiday, from an academic perspective? In order to put back in the Friday holiday, we would have to find a “Friday” class day Where? (assuming no one wants to give up the Weds before Thanksgiving holiday) Issue #3: It is nearly impossible to find a time when a large majority of the faculty can meet together, for example to address “core curriculum” issues, or “diversity issues” or “WASC issues.” How important would it be to create an academic calendar with one or more “faculty days” in it? (Again, the problem would be to find the replacement class days, as we are required to have a minimum number of class days each semester [One solution to both #2 and #3 would be to start before Labor Day all three years, keep the same end of classes dates for 2012 and 2013—i.e., picking up an extra week of classes—and then adding back in the mid-semester break and one or two “faculty days.” This option would also open up the possibility of a four-day rather than three-day midterm break in the fall.]
