Obtaining Advanced Degrees after Graduating from Saint Mary’s Undergraduate Programs The National Student Clearinghouse is a repository of information about student enrollments in higher education It tracks student enrollment histories from high school through graduate and professional school Using the Clearinghouse data, we know that 50-55% of graduates from Saint Mary’s undergraduate programs between 2001 and 2006 enrolled in graduate or professional degree programs, and between 19% and 27% of these 2001-2006 graduates obtained one or more advanced degrees (masters degree or higher) The tables below describe the advanced degrees obtained by these Saint Mary’s graduates TABLE Between 2001 and 2006, 3,402 students obtained their bachelor’s degrees from Saint Mary’s traditional undergraduate programs Of these 3,402 graduates, 750 (22%) obtained an advanced degree of a masters or higher by December 2011 About 30% of School of Science graduates obtained advanced degrees, 24% of School of Liberal Arts graduates obtained advanced degrees, and 13% of School of Economics and Business Administration graduates obtained advanced degrees The lower rate for School of Economics and Business graduates may be a result of these students choosing to enter the workforce before attending graduate school TABLE Table shows the type of advanced degree the student obtained Of students who graduated from School of Economics and Business Administration, 50% received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) Another 36% received a Masters degree that was not in Business Administration, while 11% acquired a law doctorate, and another 2% a Doctorate of Philosophy The vast majority of students from the School of Liberal Arts received a Masters degree (83%) and 15% earned a law doctorate The School of Science showed a slightly different pattern Fewer graduates earned a masters (77%) and law degree (3%), but they earned medical doctorates (MD) at higher rates (12%) than graduates from any other Saint Mary’s school TABLE Table shows the discipline in which these Saint Mary’s graduates earned by these advanced degrees School of Economics and Business graduates are most likely to receive degrees in either business (64%) or law (11%) Graduates from the School of Liberal Arts were most likely to earn their degrees in education (33%), the arts and humanities (16%) or law (15%) Graduates from the School of Science were most likely to earn their degrees in either the health professions (32%) or education (23%), and, to a lesser extent, the social sciences (8%) and business (7%) TABLE Table shows the colleges and universities from which the 2001-2006 graduates most frequently received their advanced degrees Saint Mary’s own graduate programs were by far the most popular Of the 750 students who earned an advanced degree, 164 (22%) obtained their degree from Saint Mary’s The next most popular schools were by and large located in the Bay Area, possibly a reflection of permanent residences of Saint Mary’s undergraduate student population The most popular universities for Saint Mary’s grads were also likely to be schools that students might have attended instead of Saint Mary’s for their undergraduate career, such as University of San Francisco, California State University - East Bay, Santa Clara University and San Francisco State University The type of degree earned from each respective university also varied depending on the particular university For example, students received degrees in Business Administration (and Education) from Saint Mary’s, while the majority of degrees from Santa Clara, Golden Gate University, University of the Pacific, and Seattle University were in law ... discipline in which these Saint Mary’s graduates earned by these advanced degrees School of Economics and Business graduates are most likely to receive degrees in either business (64%) or law (11%)... graduates most frequently received their advanced degrees Saint Mary’s own graduate programs were by far the most popular Of the 750 students who earned an advanced degree, 164 (22%) obtained their... degree (83%) and 15% earned a law doctorate The School of Science showed a slightly different pattern Fewer graduates earned a masters (77%) and law degree (3%), but they earned medical doctorates
