The transit is used when field mapping needs exceed the precision of mapping grade GPS units and aerial photography (i.e., centimeters of locational accuracy rather than meters). This transit, and associated hardware including the ruggedized data logger, are the “state of the art” and the standard used in our profession. This transit allows for traditional reflector based data collection using a stadia rod and adds reflector less data collection so that a single person may collect field measurements. The TESLA ruggedized data logger wirelessly receives x, y, and z data collected by the total station and the MAGNET software enables attribute information to be added to the geographic coordinates for export into a geographic information systems (GIS) for geospatial database construction. Our old total station does not allow for attribute information to be added during field data collection and does not export data into GIS formats without several intermediate data processing steps. Teaching and research utilization: The total station has been used in faculty research and teaching since the Department’s first total station was purchased in 2000. The transit supports field mapping in one of our core mapping courses, Geography 219 Map Interpretation and Analysis, and has been used in Geology 311 Coastal Processes to construct beach profiles. The instrument is also used widely in faculty and student research. This past summer (2015), the total station was used by three undergraduate geography students to map sprinkler heads, water valves and tree and shrub locations to construct a geospatial database for the University’s horticulture department. The instrument has also been used in prior years to map University building footprints to aid the University’s facilities management office. The Department has also loaned the instrument to faculty in biology and anthropology for research. Dr. Judith Stribling and a research student mapped micro topography differences in forests on Delmarva while Dr. Jason Burroughs used the total station to lay out transects to grid a site for an archaeological dig. With the proliferation of large scale field mapping opportunities, and technology changes, we need to update our decade old instrument.
