TCNJ Class of 2016 First Year Out Survey Report Career Center Highlights & Engaging in the Possibilities Our center supports the College's mission by fostering an environment that encourages students' career development through academic, leadership and experiential education Optimal student collaborations are built and enhanced through meaningful relations with Alumni, employers and representatives of post graduate education All of our services and events assist in the integrated transformative total student experience and enhance opportunities for mentored internships as well as provide opportunities for students to connect with potential employers, internship supervisors and graduate professional representatives to articulate “their story.” Outcome: #12 Princeton Review Best Career Services for 2016 Student Contacts  12,572 students come in contact with the Career Center (this does not include CE Intern coordination or Student Employment)  1,730 students participated in the Career Center for Open Hours (primarily for Resume Review), meeting with trained Peer Educators, Career Counselors or graduate career counseling interns  909 students participated in career counseling appointments 764 students explore options, skills and values through on-line assessment tools-Focus 2, MBTI or Strong Satisfaction survey indicates students gain additional resources and the session meets or exceeds expectations  Students use a mock interview tool to evaluate the interview Employers have rated students higher in FY16 from FY 15 in articulating their career goals and experiences  3,237 students participated in 133 workshops or integrated classroom activities The workshops are on topics such as career exploration, networking , professional development, interviewing skills, internships, utilizing social media, job search skills, use of the on line system, Lionslink/on line resources Career Days, Site Visits & Networking Events  943 students attended the career fairs (Spring and Fall) with 354 representatives from business, non-profit, government and graduate/professional school National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) reported between the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years, the median number of organizations participating in career fairs jumped from 125 to 148, an indicator of an improved labor market for new college graduates TCNJ event participation continues to be higher than the average  320 students attended of the networking events: the Annual Engineering and Computer Science Meet & Greet, PharmaTech Symposium, HSS Networking, Non Profit Networking, Accounting Meet & Greet, Nursing Network and DC Career Day Approximately, 30% of employers attending networking & recruiting events are TCNJ Alumni  site visits involving 20 students visited Sparta Systems, Hamilton NJ and Isles, Trenton NJ gaining insight into the culture, innovation and potential opportunities students gained internships from this experience  Each semester the Career Center facilitates an interactive Career Planning course through HSS with 24 students Student feedback is extremely positive and guest speakers are a mainstay of the course  121 students attend a business etiquette program, Dining Out In Professional Style A consultant walks us through a course meal while representatives from industries keep a lively conversation at the tables Students leave with 1-2 new tips or strategies for the interview over lunch  250 students attended information sessions and employer roundtables from 57 organizations Leadership & Internship Opportunities  4-6 Peer Career Educators are students who receive 10 hours of training on resume writing/cover letters and career services and assist in the open hours (which continue to gain popularity)  The College Enhancement Internship program is housed in the Career Center where 33 interns participate in an internship within 22 departments of the College completing project based work as well as participate in an on boarding program, leadership trainings, written reflection and “Connections.” Internships& Recruitment  The one year out survey, respondents reported spending 2-3 semesters in internships or other experiential opportunities  Over 250 organizations provided 3986 on campus student interviews in FY16 Over 500 organizations posted positions with 8,000 TCNJ candidates’ resumes distributed Employer development increased recruitment partnerships with AstraZeneca, JPMorgan Chase, Merck, Sobel, iCIMS, Intel, Seimens, Nayak, NDI, graduates responded to the survey In an effort to respond to declining response rates, the Career Center incorporated data obtained through immediate response surveys from the School of Business, the School of Engineering, the School of Arts & Communication and data from the Admissions Clearinghouse As a result of the information obtained, all 894 respondents provided both graduate school and employment information 98.9% reported they were employed full-time or part-time and/or attending graduate/professional school Of the respondents, 1.1% were not working or attending graduate/professional school Experiential Learning/Internships 65.8% (416/632) of survey respondents indicated they had participated in an internship for one or more semesters Of this group, 53.4% (222/416) had an internship for or more semesters 65.4% (155/237) secured at least one semester of a paid internship and 56.8% (125/220) had at least one unpaid internship 57.1% (137/240) had indicated an internship for at least one semester for academic credit and 60% (140/235) indicated an internship for at least one semester for no credit 38.1% (94/247) of respondents indicated their internship experience secured them employment after graduation Other experiential opportunities included: 16.7% (96/576) indicated they had one or more semesters of student teaching; 7.2% (41/570) indicated they had one or more clinical experiences; 6.2% (35/569) indicated participation in MUSE; 20.5% (117/571) indicated participation in TCNJ sponsored research and 7% (40/570) indicated participation in non-TCNJ sponsored research TCNJ Career Preparation & Graduate Expectations 354 respondents rated how well they felt TCNJ prepared them for their careers 341 (96.3%) rated their preparedness between Average and Excellent, and of this group 265 (77.7%) rated their preparedness between Above Average and Excellent Top Employers – Of the 625 respondents who provided their place (7), 60,357 Graduate School Summary Of 894 respondents, 256 (29%) indicated they attended graduate school within the first year This includes the 38 graduates who reported they are attending graduate school and working full time Of the 252 respondents who reported the graduate school they were attending, the Top Graduate/Professional Schools were: Rutgers University (41) Drexel University (6) surveys; 94/188 (50%) Education graduates responded to the surveys; 68/99 (69%) Engineering graduates responded to the surveys; 245/474 (52%) Humanities & Social Sciences graduates responded to the surveys; 72/143 (50%) Nursing & Health Exercise Science graduates responded to the surveys; 140/237 (59%) Science graduates responded to the surveys POST GRADUATION ACTIVITY As a result of the information obtained, 894 graduates provided both graduate school and employment information 98.9% reported they were employed full-time and/or attending graduate/professional school Of the respondents, 1.1% were not working or attending graduate/professional school Employment Of the 894 survey respondents, 623 (69.7%) reported that they were employed full-time in the first year after graduation 14 (1.5%) reported working part-time 209 (23.4%) indicated that they were only attending graduate school 38 (4.3%) were working full-time and attending graduate school These individuals will be portrayed in both employment and graduate statistics The number of graduates working full-time becomes 661 (73.9%) when these 38 individuals are included in the statistic The number of graduates attending graduate school becomes 247 (27.6%) when these 38 individuals are included in the statistic Of the employed graduates, 547 (85.9%) were not seeking further employment Of the 10 truly unemployed (not actively working or attending graduate school), (40%) indicated that they were searching for jobs Employment Type Students pursue occupations in a variety of functions 376 respondents indicated that they worked in the following areas: 16 (4.3%) in Administrative Services (1.9%) in Arts 127 (33.8%) in Business 13 (3.5%) in Communication (0.5%) in Consulting 78 (20.7%) in Education 33 (8.8%) in Engineering 35 (9.3%) in Health and Nursing (0.5%) in Hospitality (1.9%) in Information Technology (0.8%) in Law Related Functions (1.3%) in Mental Health (2.1%) in Non-Profit 16 (4.3%) in Research (0.5%) in Retail (1.9%) in Social Services 15 (3.9%) in Other Functions Average Salaries Of the 661 graduates who indicated that they are currently employed full time (including the 38 graduates who reported they are employed full time and attending graduate school), 416 (63%) provided their salary information All salary information is calculated based on student responses to a range of salary values from $24,999 and less to $150,000 and more The range utilizes intervals of $4,999 The average reported salary for the respondents was $55,341 Work Locations Of the 661 graduates that work full time (including the 38 graduates who reported they are employed full time and attending graduate school), 650 (98%) provided the location of their employment The top states for work location were New Jersey with 475 (73.3%) graduates, New York with 78 (11.7%) graduates, and Pennsylvania with 35 (5.4%) graduates respondents reported working outside of the country in the following locations: Bergen (1), China (2), Costa Rica (1), South Korea (1), and Spain (1) Number of Job Offers Of the 661 graduates that are currently employed full time (including the 38 graduates who reported they are employed full time and attending graduate school), 500 provided information regarding the number of job offers they received 204 (41%) received two or more job offers Academic Major and Position Obtained Of the 661 graduates that are currently employed full time (including the 38 graduates who reported they are employed full time and attending graduate school), 358 provided information regarding the relationship between their undergraduate major and their current position Of those 358: 229 (64%) respondents indicated a direct relationship between their academic major and the position they obtained 105 (29.3%) respondents indicated an indirect relationship between their academic major and the position they obtained 24 (6.7%) respondents indicated there was no relationship between their academic major and the position they obtained Experiential Learning/Internship Participation 65.8% (416/632) of survey respondents indicated they had participated in an internship for one or more semesters Of this group, 53.4% (222/416) had an internship for or more semesters 65.4% (155/237) secured at least one semester of a paid internship and 56.8% (125/220) had at least one unpaid internship 57.1% (137/240) had indicated an internship for at least one semester for academic credit and 60% (140/235) indicated an internship for at least one semester for no credit 38.1% (94/247) of respondents indicated their internship experience secured them employment after graduation Other experiential opportunities included: 16.7% (96/576) indicated they had one or more semesters of student teaching; 7.2% (41/570) indicated they had one or more clinical experiences; 6.2% (35/569) indicated participation in MUSE; 20.5% (117/571) indicated participation in TCNJ sponsored research and 7% (40/570) indicated participation in non-TCNJ sponsored research Leadership 71.8% (301/419) of respondents believed they participated as a leader within their area of interest or organization 652 respondents either agreed or strongly agreed they gained the following leadership skillsets from their campus involvement: 93.3% (388/416) Ability to communicate with others effectively; 95.2% (396/416) Ability to present information to others; 79.6% (331/416) Ability to manage/supervise a group of people; 82.7% (345/417) Ability to develop conflict resolution skills; 86.1% (358/416) Ability to manage time effectively; 91.3% (379/415) Ability to execute plans; 80.4% (333/414) Ability to manage a group’s time effectively; 77.4% (322/416) Ability to motivate other people TCNJ’s Preparation of Students for Their Careers Of the 661 students that are employed full time (including the 38 graduates who reported they are employed full time and attending graduate school), 368 (56%) rated how they felt TCNJ prepared them for their careers based on a 5-point Likert scale (Poor = 1, Excellent = 5) 68% reported career preparedness to be above average or excellent Graduate/Professional School Current Graduate/Professional School Attendance Of 894 respondents, 256 (29%) indicated they are currently attending graduate school or are accepted and will attend This includes the 38 students who responded that they are attending graduate school and working full time 154 respondents provided the number of programs to which they were accepted 53.2% of the respondents indicated they received or more offers      46.8% (72/154) received one acceptance to graduate/professional school; 16.9% (26/154) received two acceptances to graduate/professional school; 11% (17/154) received three acceptances to graduate/professional school; 9.7% (15/154) received four acceptances to graduate/professional school; 15.6% (24/154) received five or more acceptances to graduate/professional school Future Plans for Graduate Study Of the 894 survey respondents, 463 (52%) indicated whether or not they had plans for future graduate study Their plans to in the Future Of the 894 survey respondents, 399 (45%) indicated that they were considering pursuing additional degrees in the future, even if they didn’t have current plans on attending graduate were attending graduate/professional school (including the 38 graduates who reported they are employed full time and attending graduate school), 138 (55.9%) rated how well they felt TCNJ had prepared related to their undergraduate field of study 22.9% (33/144) stated their graduate/professional program was indirectly related to their undergraduate field of study 5.6% (8/144) stated their graduate/professional program was not related to their undergraduate field of study Graduate/Professional School & Assistance Of the 131 respondents who answered the question of whether they are receiving financial assistance, 48% (63/131) said yes to receiving financial assistance and 52% (68/163) stated they are not receiving financial assistance Of the 68 who reported they are not receiving financial assistance through fellowships, scholarships, or assistantships, 25% (17/68) reported they are working full-time 63 respondents addressed the type of assistance received: 39.7% (25/63) received partial tuition reimbursement; 52.4% (33/63) received full tuition reimbursement; 41.3% (26/63) received medical benefits; 15.9% (10/63) received an hourly rate position; 58.7% (37/63) received a stipend; 14.3% (9/63) received travel advantages The average stipend amount reported by 35 respondents was $21,303 Comparative Analysis by Academic School Employment Current
