known how to questions about communicative situation, gradually recognize and remember structures commonly used in communicative situations in English tests - select the most suitable respone to complete these exchanges - prepare better for the National Examination SangKienKinhNghiem.net 1.3 Subjects of the study The study focused on thirty-six students of class 12A3 at Quan Son high school who are taking an intensive English course to prepare for 2017 National Examination to university They have learned English for at least years and years after years they have developed their conversation strategies for themselves with basic daily expressions in English 1.4 Methods of the study In order to achieve the above aims, the teacher used analysis and summary in order to give words, phrases or structures commonly used in specific communicative situations The teacher guide the students the way to find the suitable answers After that, the students will have time to practice them again and again After doing in a period of time, they will gradually select the most suitable respones for those exchanges The study is conducted in periods with the summary of all the expressions or structures used in specific conversational situations and further exercise practice PART 2: CONTENT 2.1 Literature review 2.1.1 A communicative situation A communication situation is the specific time, place, activity and people involved in a dialogue, which make it unique For example, 2017 National Exam- The 1st illustrating Test on English Question 20: Two friends Diana and Ann are talking about Ann’s new blouse - Mike: “ So, you have your fifth high- school reunion coming up” - Lan: “………” A Oh, the school reunion was wonderful B The foot at the reunion was excellent C Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it D No, you are in no mood for the event Keys: B C 2.2 The reality of seleting answers for communicative situations in English Tests of the students of class 12A3 at Quan Sơn High School Quan Son is one of the mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa province The living condition and studying condition are poor and restrict Although students who are in grade 12 have been learning English for years, they still feel that English is a very difficult subject, especially the speaking skill They have many difficulties in understanding English sentences as well as using English to communicate with others Besides, in English conversations or communicative situations, words, phrases and expressions used are quite different from what they ‘ve seen and learnt in reading passages or other written documents Because these expressions are spoken language Therefore, when the students have to choose the answer for these questions, they often select without understanding and they not know it is right or wrong 2.3 The process of teaching communicative situations in English Tests to the students of class 12A3 The teacher followed these stages: + Stage 1: The teacher asked the students to 10 questions and checks their results (the first survey) + Stage 2: The teacher provided the students with the knowledge about some structures and their suitable responses to communicative situations and then gave them examples to illustrate 11 SangKienKinhNghiem.net + Stage 3: Because of the students’ low results on the first survey, the teacher was really worried about the students’ study The teacher disscussed the problem with other teachers Moreover, the teacher directly talked with the students about the difficulty that they were facing with The result showed that they choose the answers without understanding The teacher have the students that exercise again after being provided the theory This time the students focus on structures and find the suitable responses + Stage : During reviewing periods, the teacher analysed and guide them to select the most suitable response - through exercises, teachers guides, the students choose their answers and assessments through two tests in two surveys  Students’ results based on the first survey: Class Number 12A3 36 Very good 13.9 % The teacher designed two written tests focusing on daily expressions for 36 students The tests were conducted twice, before and after they revised all the structures used in communicative situations After revising, the students performed much better with students (accounting for 5.5%) getting from points The percentage of the students who gets points is 33.3% in comparison with 17 students who get and point (accounting for 47.2%) and students( accounting for 13.9 %) making mistakes in recognizing structures Due to the lack of the sense of culture and chance to practise in real life, the students find it difficult to understand few situations It can be seen from the tables that the latter result is better After learning some structures and suitable responses to specific communicative situations, the students can select the right answer for these ones Gradually, they will be familiar to these structures and exercises related to communication better Meanwhile, they will use English in communication more naturally 18 SangKienKinhNghiem.net Part III CONCLUSION 3.1 Conclusion In conclusion, speaking is a complex and difficult skill in learning English It requires not only an adequate knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, structure but also an awareness of cultural aspects of English language By recognizing structures used in communicative situations, the students would feel easier in finding the suitable responses to those situations This study focused on cultural aspect of the English language used in English tests Not only does it provide students the knowledge to prepare better for the National Exam, but also the students can develop their speaking skillusing what they have learnt in the real life This is my own experience in teaching paragaph writing to the students of class 12A3 this school year Due to the limitation of knowledge and little experience in teaching, a lot of defects and mistakes are unavoidable I would like to thank all readers for their criticism as well as comments for a better study in near future 3.2 Suggestion Firstly, a new textbook should be published in stead of the current one Although the current textbooks has been changed much in order to meet with the need of the students as well as the society, the contents of speaking parts are not really suitable to the daily life Moreover, in the paper test of the National Exam there are questions about communicative situations while in the textbook there is not much knowledge about them Besides, high school students not have opportunity to practise much in the real life so they are easy to forget Therefore, The Ministry of Education and Traning should have plans to edit the textbooks and cirriculum which are more suitable for the changes of both the students and the society Secondly and even more importantly, high schools need to be equipped with advanced technology and other conditions to have an effect on teaching and studying a language XÁC
