One Gustave L Levy Place, Box 1077 New York, NY 10029 T: (212) 659-9567 carol.horowitz!@mountsinai.org icahn.mssm.edu January 13, 2021 Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s Commitment Statement to join the Action Collaborative Partner Network The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM)’s 2018 report, Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, rigorously explores the prevalent problem and harmful consequences of gender-based harassment in academia This pivotal report also emphasizes the importance of institutional action in ending such harassment through thoughtful and proven or promising policies and practices The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) leadership believes in building and maintaining a supportive, collegial environment free from harassment for all faculty, students, and trainees We strive to create a culture where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and be valued We recognize that to progress equity and prevent barriers to equity such as harassment and bias-based mistreatment, we must call upon each member of the community in building an institution that, through action and in word, values, promotes, and improves the experiences of all individuals ISMMS is the proud home to an Office of Gender Equity in Science and Medicine, Office for Women’s Careers, Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Office of Well-being and Resilience, Office for Faculty Development, Ombuds Office, Medical Education Department, and others whose overlapping responsibilities and collaborations reinforce one another Our offices and departments work together, and with our faculty, trainees and students, every day to troubleshoot, develop, implement, and test novel ways to improve our system We are actively engaged in updating and disseminating clearer guidelines and visuals for reporting harassment, providing workshops and resources on upstander interventions and interrupting microaggressions, creating infrastructure to host candid conversations for improvement, building an anti-racism taskforce, surveying our faculty to assess our climate, and more We are committed to building upon these efforts, remaining open to feedback from our community and promising practices from the field, ensuring ISMMS is a place where everyone can thrive ISMMS is honored to join NASEM’s Action Collaborative as a partner organization ISMMS pledges to actively participate in the critical work necessary to identify, research, develop, implement and share efforts for addressing and preventing all forms of sexual harassment and promoting a campus climate of civility and respect As part of our commitment to NASEM, as well as the ISMMS community-at-large, ISMMS will, consistently and proactively, share information about the work happening across our campuses, while also looking to the Action Collaborative for best practices, resources, and lessons learned for use, adaptation, implementation, and sharing Sincerely, Carol R Horowitz, MD MPH Dean for Gender Equity in Science and Medicine Director, Institute for Health Equity Research Professor, Population Health Professor, Medicine Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
