After careful consideration and an intensive, competitive process, we are so excited to welcome you to the Class of 2020 Bonner Leaders Cohort at Rollins College A four-year, campus-based community service opportunity, the Rollins College Bonner Leaders Program provides scholarships to students who are passionate about working directly with local non-profit organizations Developed by the Bonner Foundation, a national philanthropic organization based in Princeton, New Jersey, the Bonner Leaders Program transforms not only the students who are directly supported by the program, but also the campus and community in which they serve and learn Inside this starter kit, you will find helpful information that will allow you to be successful throughout your time in this program It is sure to be an impactful and rewarding experience At the core of the Bonner Leaders Program is the belief that colleges play a vital societal role in nurturing and mobilizing thoughtful, caring and diverse leaders dedicated to community engagement Designed for full-time undergraduate students, the program empowers participants to address some of the greatest challenges of our time through community-based learning and service Bonner Leaders receive a scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition and to encourage their continued efforts to positively impact their communities 2016 First Year Retreat Schedule Welcome, Bonner Leaders! make a clear and definitive impact in their local community Rollins College has many strong community partnerships with which we work directly through different initiatives and service projects While your conduct reflects upon the Bonner Leaders Program, it also ultimately reflects upon the college and should be congruent with Rollins’ mission of global citizenship and responsible leadership Bonner Leadership Team EXPECTATIONS • Offer support and guidance for all Bonner Leaders, answer program questions and beyond • Act as a liaison between Bonner Leaders and community partners when concerns and questions arise • Hold each Bonner Leader accountable for what is included in the scholarship expectations BONNER LEADERS EXPECTATIONS • Engage in dialogue and activities during class meetings and retreats • Demonstrate respect for the opinions and cultures of others • Ask questions when they need help and meet with Bonner staff in a timely manner about any issues or concerns • Support and encourage Bonner peers • Fulfill expectations asked of you and show initiative • Meet deadlines for documentation such as Community Learning Agreements and hour logs • Display professionalism in attitude and dress while interacting with community partners; arrive on time and keep a consistent schedule • Attend and participate in Bonner events, initiatives and programs • Attend regularly scheduled one-on-ones with Bonner Leadership Team Staff members COMMUNITY PARTNER EXPECTATIONS • Set clear guidelines for projects and responsibilities • Communicate expectations and be available for questions • Provide a safe and comfortable working environment Bonner Service COMMUNITY PARTNER Committment In order to develop from exploration to expertise, you must make a prolonged commitment to one Bonner community partner for the next to years You are required to spend at least to hours each week with your community partner With the help of your community partner, you will create a consistent schedule that will stay the same from one week to the next; with the exception of holidays or special circumstances If you encounter a conflict, give your supervisor plenty of notice TRAINING & ENRICHMENT In addition to the weekly service committment with your community partner and other service experiences, you will participate in training and enrichment programs These supplement your knowledge and skills, and include an academic course based on leadership and service models TRACKING SERVICE You are expected to be able to effectively navigate BWBRS (Bonner Web Based Reporting System) to keep track of all your program requirements, accomplishments and logistical information More information on the BWBRS system can be found on the next few pages EXTRACURRICULAR INVOLVEMENT Jobs on campus, such as being a Resident Assistant or a Peer Mentor, cannot count toward your Bonner requirements However, Bonner Leaders are encouraged to explore other involvement opportunities, as this truly enriches the undergraduate experience! Direct Consistent Life-Changing 10 CLCE Leadership Opportunities Rollins College educates students for global citizenship and responsible leadership The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) fosters, encourages, and promotes leadership development, and active citizenship within the classroom, on campus, in the community and beyond CLCE is deeply committed to fostering a lifelong commitment to personal and social responsibility within the Rollins community As a member of our Rollins community, you have the opportunity to impact the world and serve as an agent of change Minute Difference: Rollins faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to take part in making a difference in Central Florida in only minutes right outside the Cornell Campus Center Projects have included: cards for children in the hospital, bags of love for the homeless, fundraising for disaster relief, and petition signing for policy change The VolunTAR: Online database that shares upcoming service opportunities happening on campus and in our community Check out the database on the Leadership and Community Engagement website or keep an eye out for VolunTAR emails to be in the know about ways to get involved Fern Creek Elementary School: Serve as a one-on-one mentor to a student Mentors spend 30 to 45 minutes per week throughout the academic year helping the school’s underserved and at-risk students improve their reading, math, science, and life skills Join us for Pathways to College Day, as we host many of Fern Creek’s students on Rollins’ campus for a day of college awareness and preparedness 24 Immersion Experiences: Rollins Immersion: Citizens Take Action Rollins exposes students to critical cultural, social, political, and structural issues in the community through weekend and weeklong experiences of civic and community engagement throughout the academic year These experiences help participants begin to understand the systemic issues facing the world today in hopes of finding a passion for change and service SPARC (Service, Passion, Action, Rollins College): A day of service, education and action in the Central Florida community during fall orientation This experience is continued through multiple academic service-learning and research projects, immersions, and reflections throughout the semester in their Rollins College Conference (RCC) first year seminar course SPARC also challenges students to engage as active participants in creating a life of citizenship, leadership, and action that starts in their first semester ELI: The Emerging Leadership Institute is a weekend-long experience aimed to facilitate the empowerment, development and fellowship of first and second year emerging leaders at Rollins The weekend focuses on developing leadership potential through discourse, interactive workshops, and fun! LAP: The Leadership Ally Program provides students an opportunity to attend various leadership conferences or institutes Each fall these student travelers return to campus with a renewed vigor and dedication to put their new skills to use in creating change Each of the students participating in leadership conferences or institutes are paired up with a faculty or staff member who serve as their ally in their leadership journey Rita Bornstein Student Leadership Forum: This program honors a past Rollins President and her extraordinary leadership of Rollins College Because of Rita Bornstein’s commitment to educating students for leadership in their careers and communities, the program creates opportunities for Rollins students to enrich their educational experience through special interactive programs that bring demonstrated leaders to campus Each Bornstein Student Leadership Forum seeks to help students develop an understanding of real-world leadership in preparation for their own leadership journey Self-Awareness and Personality Inventories: Learn about yourself, skills, and strengths through the use of personality inventories such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Gallup’s StrengthsQuest, the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), and True Colors Each instrument highlights personality differences as well as strategies to develop your leadership capacity and self-efficacy, increasing your ability to engage in teamwork with others! Community Engagement Fair: Annual event that allows students, staff, and faculty to meet community partners from around the Central FL community Rollins members are able to learn about the missions of these organizations as well as upcoming service opportunities Democracy Project: The Democracy Project at Rollins College is intended to increase and elevate the civic engagement of the Rollins community Through the Democracy Project, you can learn more about how to participate in the democratic process! Halloween Howl: An annual event in October that brings over 1,500 members of the Central FL community to campus for a Halloween celebration This is a free event for families to attend; it provides a safe space for children to dress up and celebrate Halloween as a community Rollins students participate by hosting carnival booths and craft activities on Mills Lawn, creating haunted houses out of residential space, getting involved on the planning committee, and being general volunteers at the event Holiday FunFest: An annual event in December that brings over 50 foster children from the Central FL community to the Rollins campus during the holiday season to participate in games, crafts, and other holiday activities This is a free event for the foster care children, families, and organizations, giving the foster parents and staff members a break for one night and giving the children a night of holiday fun Volunteer opportunities include: being a buddy for the day to one of the children, purchasing a gift for one of the children, or running an activity table #summerSERVE: A campus-wide initiative that connects students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Rollins College, giving them the opportunity to continue their engagement with the local community throughout the summer Through direct service, community engagement, and education, #summerSERVE provides the chance for everyone involved to build 25 meaningful relationships Community Engagement (CE) Courses: At Rollins, courses with a community engagement component (including service- learning, and/or community-based research) are being offered under the CE designation in the Rollins Course Catalogue Students reflect on how service and research influences their understanding of the subject CE courses engage students in roughly 15-30 hours of direct community-based work throughout the semester with non-profit organizations throughout Central FL Organizations to get involved in: JUMP: Join Us in Making Progress by connecting and engaging in events, programs, and initiatives that make a difference in communities across Central Florida JUMP is an all student led committee that does everything from connecting with community partners to organizing events with them, bringing children on campus, going to homeless shelters, and working with other student organizations on campus Rollins Relief: A student global service organization committed to assisting in local and international relief efforts Rollins Relief has sponsored relief trips for students, faculty and staff journeying to St Bernard Parish, New Orleans to assist with the rebuilding of the region Rollins Relief also creates additional opportunities to serve and lead including trips to New Orleans and local community relief projects Want to learn more? Visit the CLCE website: www.rollins.edu/leadershipandcommunityengagement 26 Meet the Bonner Leaders Class of 2020 Lizanne Arias Lizanne was born in San Salvador, El Salvador She attended Academia Británica Cuscatleca, where she was part of the track and field team of the school During her junior and senior year, she was involved in various community service activities such as working with Habitat for Humanity to build houses, selling t-shirts for the national Down syndrome day in order to raise funds for an organization that gives therapy to children with Down syndrome and organizing various activities to entertain children living in orphanages Furthermore, on her senior year, she was part of the board of directors in the Interact club of her school and was in charge of managing the public relations as well as the creative committee Lizanne graduated from high school on 2015 and after graduating she went to live to the city of Bremen in Germany for a couple of months to learn German At Rollins College, she hopes to study Psychology as her major Nicole Broeffle-Vietze Nicole Broeffle seeks adventure  She enjoys mountain biking through the brilliant trails found in her backyard of Asheville, North Carolina You can often find Nicole on a tennis court, hitting around with friends and family, or intensely practicing her game As a music lover, Nicole plays both the piano (kind of) and the cello Traveling is a great way to see the world in a new perspective, and Nicole hopes to venture out and experience as many cultures as possible Her passions include spreading the interest of classical music among younger generations and preserving the environment Kevin Chadaideh I was born and raised in Winter Park, and am very excited to be embarking on my college career at Rollins I intend to double major in International Business and Philosophy, and as of now my goal beyond Rollins is to pursue a JD-MBA I have a passion for travel and exploration, and am at my happiest when I can contribute to the development and improvement of the world community I am also very invested in learning about issues regarding immigration policy and reform As a Bonner Leader I hope to work with community leaders on both a grassroots and policy level, in an effort to enact positive change through immigrant and refugee aid Sebastian Hedge I am originally from the Northeast and moved to Florida almost years ago At Rollins, I plan on studying political science and earning my MBA through the 3/2 program I am active with 4-H, a teen docent at the Central Florida Zoo and a member of a competitive FIRST robotics team With my team, I promote STEM skills and build robots to compete against teams from around the globe At my high school, I earned numerous industry certifications in MTA, Word, Excel, Photoshop and Powerpoint My main hobby is music; I play guitar in a local Florida band Anastacia Jackson I’ve used most of my years as a youth building relationships and helping others as much as I can I’m energetic, creative, witty and compassionate I have a strong relationship with my family and friends, and I enjoy making new friends each chance I get I’ve volunteered at many organizations in the past years: animal shelters, schools, and orphanages are some of the few Service is a strong passion of mine and so is giving back to my community When I’m not volunteering or taking on service opportunities, I enjoy going to the beach, listening to music and going to concerts and festivals, and spending time with my family watching classic movies I’m really looking forward to being part of the Bonner Leader organization and I can’t wait to get to meet and help different people and organizations through the program! Kalese Justice Kalese is passionate about making a difference in the community and defines community as a place of resource, a place where needs are met and a place of hope She believes that hope encourages determination not only for herself but for others as well Kalese volunteers countless hours in community outreach so people can know they have help and hope She’s an advocate for homeless families, has served as chairperson of Central Florida YMCA Teen Ambassadors Board and is an Ambassador and founding member of B.R.A.V.E (Bystanders Rising Against Violence Everywhere), a chapter of Safe House of Seminole B.R.A.V.E is a resource for teens that promotes healthy relationships by recognizing signs of many potential forms of abuse, as well as the importance of respect of consent Kalese aspires to answer the call of leadership with a unique vision for success geared toward the social construction for the greater good 27 Nam Nguyen Coming from suburban Boston, Massachusetts, Nam is a community leader and advocate at heart Initiating a collaboration between the YMCA and Boys & Girls Club has helped her develop a voice for the youth in the community and at the table She is an advocate for policy and advocacy with the Michael J Fox Foundation and has served as an Assistant State Director in MA for the Parkinson’s Action Network Her love for language and culture helps her form relationships with the community while her voice helps her advocate Nam chose to get involved in community engagement because she wants to contribute to a prospering, healthy, and happy future James Payne I’m a Boone High School Graduate I’ve lived in Orlando my whole life and worked with organizations like the Orlando Science Center, Kiwanis Club of South Orlando I’m a National Academy of Finance graduate and have worked with working class Orlando families by taking care of their taxes I’ve also interned and worked with several major businesses including Allstate Insurance and CFE Federal Credit Union These experiences taught me the essentials of working in a team and the benefits of giving to the community I was also captain of the Quiz Bowl team and I was both a lawyer and witness for our school’s team that participated in the statewide Mock Trial competition I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to be a part of the Rollins College class of 2020 and I’m even more elated to be a part of the Bonner Leaders team Morgan Snoap I will be starting my freshman year at Rollins this fall studying Art History with the hopes of eventually becoming a professor of the subject Other than art and its history, my interests include cats, reading, music, movies, and tea I’m an eternal optimist and I love a good academic challenge, so I can’t wait to smile my way through the new challenges—and sometimes stress—of a college education I’m so excited to be attending Rollins and I’m so looking forward to being a part of the Bonner Leaders program! Sunnaz “Sunny” Toreihi As an incoming first-year to Rollins College, it is an absolute dream to expand my plans of creating a nonprofit organization to help those who struggle with speech disabilities Struggling with my speech impediment through all of my life, I ultimately found peace by doing community service through Speech & Debate After becoming captain of my team, I understood the power I had to inspire others to look beyond their imperfections and reach for a stronger, more successful tomorrow I intend on continuing to give others who have suffered through the same struggle their internal piece through service Ryan Tillotson I’m from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania I come from a larger sized family of six siblings; five of them being brothers, both older and younger than me This year, I graduated from Eden Christian Academy I am a very outgoing and engaged person, both in my high school and in my community In high school, I participated in activities such as the golf team, the mock trial team, spring musicals and being the school mascot, the warrior I have also been very involved with my church too from working multiple weekends a month to missions trips as well I’m looking forward to this school year and the next four years at Rollins I’m excited to meet new people and make new friends and have brand new life experiences not only in the bonner program, but in the rest of the community of Rollins as well Sara Willenkin I have had jobs as an assistant teacher and as a private English tutor I love translating and have earned awards from the Osaka Governor and the Japan Council of International Schools for bridging cultures My entire high school class volunteered for a week in Cebu, Philippines to repaint two community centers and to help out in a local children’s library We went overseas to assist the locals but we came back having been taught by them what it truly means to be happy As a Bonner, I hope to grow as a leader and a community volunteer, making use of my experience and widening my view of the world even further Dean Wynn I would love to tell you about my major and dream job, but the truth is: I don’t know yet! Rollins is my opportunity to explore all of my options and find where my passion lies I have participated in art, business, and STEM programs in the past and loved them all! I also was the Community Chair in a charity organization known as Pay-It-Forward A common characteristic that I have found in my many interests is that I love helping people I’m hoping that through the Bonner Leaders Program and through the Honors program at Rollins, I will find how I, personally, am best able to assist others I am excited for all of the opportunities that have been given to me and for the ones that still lie ahead! CLASS of 2019 Andrew burns Born and raised in Maine, I recently spent this past summer volunteering at OCA’s summer camp completing my Bonner Summer of Service On campus I have been an active member of SGA, the Fox Fund Committee, and I am a brother of the X-Club Fraternity I enjoy working with people with disabilities at my permanent community partner organization, OCA Marissa Cobuzio Hi, I’m Marissa! I am majoring in biology with a pre-veterinary track and minoring in sociology I plan on attending veterinary medical school after I graduate I love animals and have always been passionate about helping them Through my service with the Bonner Leadership Program, I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Pet Therapy program at Florida Hospital as well as volunteer with their pediatric oncology unit, which I’m excited to continue with this upcoming year. Overall, I love laughing, being active, and helping others! Meredith Ewan Meredith is a 2nd year student at Rollins College and is a double Major in studying Art History and Art Studio Her passion areas include access to the arts and working with individuals with special needs As part of her service, she spends her time as an Art Program Director at OCA, inc When she’s not working or studying, you can often find Meredith watching documentaries and cooking Justin Fisher The feeling of satisfaction one receives through helping others is something every person has the capability to experience and therefore, should thrive to exactly that The Princess couldn’t have said it any better, “Everyone needs to be valued Everyone has the potential to give something back.” With the help of the Bonner Leaders Program, we are looked upon to reach out to the Rollins/Winter Park Community as well as the neighboring Orlando areas to offer service where it is needed, something that is truly satisfying Mark Gagnon Hello! I was born in Paris, France, and I have amazing siblings I credit all of my past and future success to my loving family I graduated from Orangewood Christian School in Maitland, Florida My favorite aspect of service is most certainly developing and utilizing creative solutions to difficult social situations I am passionate about improving life for people experiencing homelessness and serve at Coalition for the Homeless as a Bonner Leader Taylor Gross Taylor Gross is a second-year Bonner Leader from Parkland, Florida Although she is still searching for the right major, she is passionate about LGBT rights, animal welfare, and combatting gender-based violence She loves serving at Zebra Coalition where she works with LGBT youth; Zebra holds a special place in her heart Taylor is an empathetic and compassionate person who will help anyone that needs it, whether they have six legs, four legs, or two Cody Gubin Born to two wonderful parents, I come from a tight knit and amazing family At an early age, I developed a passion for tennis and went to McCallie School where I was on the varsity team By watching my parents through their work, I have been instilled a diligent work ethic and have always strived in doing my best At Rollins I play on the men’s Tennis Team and as a Bonner I serve with Special Olympics Jasmine Jackson Going into her second year at Rollins, the Bonner Leader Program has allowed Jasmine to explore, discover, and develop new interest in various service areas Currently she is severing at The Paragon School for children on the autism spectrum; which has provided her countless learning experiences from both the teachers and students and providing care packages, supporting underserved youth’s emotional needs, and tutoring services for educational needs for under severed citizens and children Her love of service for underserved citizens comes from providing Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and presents to families in the Greater Orlando area, hosting backpack drives, and offering tutoring services for children living in extended stay motels Kate Knight Kate is a rising second year Bonner Leader and an international relations and religious studies double major Originally from Southern California, she now resides in Savannah, Georgia. Her service passion areas include education and the development of underserved youth In addition to her studies, she enjoys hiking, reading, and international travel After earning her undergraduate degree, Kate plans on pursuing a law degree and possibly working in the non-profit sector somewhere abroad.  Skylar Knight I am a second-year student from Montverde, Florida, pursuing degrees in both Political Science and Philosophy After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan on studying international law and hope to eventually make a career in Europe My passion area is youth with disabilities, and I volunteer at the Conductive Education Center of Orlando Rachel Wasserman Rachel is from Dahlonega, GA and is a rising sophomore studying Elementary Education at Rollins College She decided to pursue this after spending her first year in the Bonner Leader Program as a Teacher’s Assistant at Grand Avenue Primary School. Her passions include rowing and 4-H Rachel has worked during the summer as a Sports and Recreation Counselor for the University of Georgia’s 4-H Summer Camping Program 30 CLASS of 2018 SASHA GALLOWAY Originally from Massachusetts, I grew up spending summers in Maine with my family and have always been taught to value the environment and outdoors activities I’ve just spent a semester abroad in New Zealand exploring my passion for the outdoors and am excited to return to Rollins and continue my studies of Music and Psychology Traveling and music are what make me tick, while environmental sustainability is the area I’m most passionate about serving I look forward to serving stepping into a new leadership role as a Bonner Intern this year!
