Xavier College 2020 Year 10 Subject Selection - Student/Parent Information Phases of Subject Selection PHASE (Wednesday May 27) 27 May - Year 10 will meet with Mrs Hawkins to discuss subject section procedures for this term 27 May - 2.00 - Students will watch a presentation and ask questions via the chat function on Zoom Year 10 (Students) 2.00 - 2.40 - Students will watch a presentation and ask questions via the chat function on Zoom Phases of Subject Selection PHASE (Monday June) Year 10 during Learning Session 2A will be able to access subject offering via Moodle and discuss choices Year during Learning Session 2B will be able to access subject offering via Moodle and discuss choices Year during Learning Session 2B will be able to access subject offering via Moodle and discuss choices Students will be asked to explore the Moodle ’subject selection videos’ with their parents on Monday night June Phases of Subject Selection PHASE (Wednesday June) Webinar with Mr Pate, Mr Malone and Mrs Hawkins to outline the next steps for subject selection and answer any questions you may have 7.00 - 7.30 - a link will be sent via schoolbag and email to parents in Years 8-10 Phases of Subject Selection PHASE (Completed via online student portal) Year 10 selections for Year 11 2021 are due on 26 June by 8.00am Phases of Subject Selection PHASE (Notification - Term 3) In Term students will receive notification of their pattern of study for 2021 Process Outline the process of Subject Selection for Year 10 students Beginning Wednesday 27 May Explain the Subject Selection Handbook /Moodle Zoom/2020 Subject Application and Lines and the Letter of Intention Provide important information about your child’s subject choices for Year 11-12 (2021-2022) PROCESS Letter and timeline in your Subject Selection Handbook SUBJECT SELECTION HANDBOOK/MOODLE/ZOOM/LETTERS SUBJECT SELECTION HANDBOOK Provides information for you and your parents Has an outline of each subject offered This will be emailed to you, it is also on Moodle MOODLE Videos available on ALL subjects and flyers on VET subjects, as well as information from the Masters Builders Association, University of Sydney and UAC SUBJECT SELECTION ZOOM Q AND A Leaders of Learning and Assistant Leaders of Learning will be conducting a Q and A through Zoom on Thursday 28th May from 2pm-2.40pm The Zoom details will emailed to all students SUBJECT SELECTION HANDBOOK/MOODLE/LETTERS/ZOOM PRELIMINARY COURSE SELECTION FORM It has your name on it It is blue and on the back of the Course Application Form ONE LINE=ONE SELECTION EXCEPT LINE (Religion & extension courses) and LINE (VET & online learning) where two choices can be made in each line You are to use this to select your subjects and ensure it matches with what you selected on the portal SUBJECT SELECTION HANDBOOK/MOODLE/LETTERS/ZOOM SUBJECT SELECTION HANDBOOK/MOODLE/LETTERS/ZOOM LETTER OF INTENTION ● From Mr Pate ● With your parents/guardians you are to identify your intentions for next year eg Going on to Year 11, Going to Trade Training, getting an apprenticeship etc The official leaving age is 17 years of age ● Due the same day as the portal closes ● It is to be handed to the front office THIS LETTER MUST BE RETURNED TO THE FRONT OFFICE BY THE DUE DATE (26 June) IMPORTANT INFORMATION - You must decide if you want an ATAR OR NON-ATAR HSC - Each course is worth either or units - If you choose Catholic Studies, Studies in Catholic Thought or Studies of Religion Unit you will be studying Work Studies unit - In Year 11 you will be studying 12 units - Students who wish to gain an ATAR need to study at least Category A courses and/or one Category B (VET) course for your HSC IMPORTANT INFORMATION You can change from an ATAR Pattern of study to a NON-ATAR through Year 11 and 12 BUT NOT the reverse IMPORTANT INFORMATION COMPULSORY SUBJECTS Religious Education Catholic Studies Non ATAR and ATAR students Studies in Catholic Thought Non ATAR and ATAR students Studies of Religion unit ATAR students or Studies of Religion unit ATAR students ADVANCED ENGLISH STUDENTS OR STUDENTS WITH AN OVERALL A or B IN ENGLISH THROUGHOUT STAGE English English Studies Non ATAR students or students who are not doing any other Category B subject or Standard English or Advanced English STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE AN OVERALL A OR B THROUGHOUT STAGE REPORTS ARE CONSIDERED IMPORTANT INFORMATION SCIENCE Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Investigating Science Students can complete a maximum of units of Science It is highly recommended that if you choose Physics, Biology or Chemistry that you choose Investigating Science IMPORTANT INFORMATION SCIENCE RECOMMENDATIONS PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY BIOLOGY AND INVESTIGATING SCIENCE 5.3 MATHS- A or B’s in Stage reports ENGLISH- A or B’s in Stage reports SCIENCE- A or B’s in Stage reports Looking specifically at components, not the overall grade SCIENCE- A or B’s in Stage reports Looking specifically at components, not the overall grade IMPORTANT INFORMATION MATHEMATICS RECOMMENDATIONS EXTENSION MATHEMATICS An overall A throughout Stage in 5.3 Mathematics and an interview with Mr Scerri ADVANCED MATHEMATICS STANDARD MATHEMATICS Overall A or B throughout Stage in 5.3 Mathematics If you got a C or below in 5.1 you should NOT be selecting Standard Mathematics Overall A throughout Stage in 5.2 Mathematics and an test Students who are currently undertaking Accelerated Mathematics are to select HSC Mathematics Advanced IMPORTANT INFORMATION HSIE RECOMMENDATIONS ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ Ancient History Business Studies Legal Studies Modern History Society and Culture Students selecting any HSIE course MUST have an overall C grade or greater in Stage reports in English and HSIE IMPORTANT INFORMATION EARLY COMMENCEMENT VET COURSES Do you wish to continue with Early Commencement VET courses? GOLDEN RULES DECIDE BASED ON… INTEREST subjects you enjoy ABILITY subjects you are good at MOTIVATION subjects you really want to learn and related to your career goals IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOUR CHOICE=YOUR RESPONSIBILITY Watch the subject clips on MOODLE with your parents and on Monday June in learning session 2A Attend the Zoom Q and A Thursday 28th May 2pm-2.40pm Be well informed and use the time you have to read the booklet and talk to the right people who can assist you Use your Year 10 Semester reports and Teacher feedback to guide you HSC MINIMUM STANDARDS TESTING TEST TIMETABLE- WEEK 10, TERM ● Practice Tests should have been completed by Week 10 Practice Test instructions are being sent via post to all students This includes the timetable for Week 10 45 mins per test Reading, Numeracy and Writing (approx 500 words) On the day of the test: ● ● ● ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ You will be given your PIN letter which contains the test URL, your student number and PIN to log in to the tests You must accept the conditions in order to sit the tests When the supervisor tells you to start, read the instructions and log in using your student number and PIN You can then begin the test The time that you have remaining to complete the test will display at all times on the top right hand corner of the page Once you have finished the test, select ‘Submit and finish’ QUESTION TIME WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK NOW?
