and viewing their relationships with less importance than librarians (Phelps and Campbell, 2012) Silas M Oliveira Andrews University Discussion When a librarian’s professional value system is centered on being partners in the teaching/endeavor, her actions fundamentally change (Meulemans & Carr, 2013) Faculty may not consider librarians as full partners but instead, as professionals; and viewing their relationships with less importance than librarians (Phelps and Campbell, 2012) Silas M Oliveira Andrews University Discussion Because higher education places librarians in a subordinate role within the institutional hierarchy, even if they have faculty status equal to teaching faculty, they may not believe they are empowered to take the lead in instituting an information literacy program (Meulemans & Carr, 2013) …If librarians continue to treat what we as a service, then we will continue to be treated as service providers (Meulemans & Carr, 2013) Silas M Oliveira Andrews University Discussion Without some sort of guiding principles, a librarian can become an automaton that serves the needs of faculty (Meulemans & Carr, 2013) Even though it is disciplinary faculty that initiate the context for library instruction, that does not diminish the necessity of librarians taking equal, and if necessary, primary agency in the construction of the learning environment for students (Meulemans & Carr, 2013) Silas M Oliveira Andrews University Conclusion James White Library needs to include in their mix of services those that are developed through real partnership with faculty in order to increase its value and improve its image which will result in greater support, thus strengthening the library’s role in accomplishing the university’s teaching and learning mission Silas M Oliveira Andrews University References Brady, K & Michelle Kraft, (2012) Embedded & clinical librarianship: Administrative support for vital new roles Journal of Library Administration, vol 52, no 8, pp 716-730 Carlson, J & Kneale, R (2011) Embedded librarianship in the research context: navigating new waters College & Research Library News, vol 72, no 3, pp 167-170 Christiansen, L., Sombler, M & Thaxton, L (2004) A report on librarian-faculty relations from a sociological perspective The Journal of Academic Librarianship, vol 30, no 2, pp 116-121 Kobzina, N G (2010) A faculty-librarian partnership: a unique opportunity for course integration Journal of Library Administration, vol 50, no.4, pp 293314 Meulemas, Y.N & Carr, A (2013).Not at your service: building genuine facultylibrarian partnerships Reference Services Review, Vol 41, No (EarlyCite pre-publication article from Emerald) Phelps, S.F & Campbell, N (2012) Commitment and trust in librarian-faculty relationships The Journal of Academic Librarianship, Vol 32, no 1, pp 13-19 Pritchard, P A (2010) The embedded science librarian;
