SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Title: A study on the Establishment of Sustainable Shrimp farming industry and Its challenges in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam Author: NGUYEN ANH MINH Shrimp aquaculture plays an important key in the economy of Vietnam However, the significant development of shrimp culture has revealed problems that need to be considered with the aim to ensure sustainability of the shrimp industry The thesis was conducted with objectives: (1) To understand past and present changes in the shrimp industry and to describe the characteristics of the ISFS in coastal provinces of the MD; (2) To analyse the current situation of the MS; (3) To analyse the current situation of the RS; (4) To compare between MS and RS to point out advantages and problems; (5) To propose recommendations for future sustainable development of the shrimp industry in the MD In terms of the first objective (1), a case study was carried out in four coastal provinces via interviewing 80 key shrimp farmers in Ca Mau and Kien Giang province in order to understand the currently context and the characteristics of integrated shrimp farming systems in the MD The second objective (2) was conducted in Nam Can district of Ca Mau province throughout the field trip in 2019 The integrated mangrove–shrimp farming system is ! vi! currently the best solution to ensure the development of the shrimp industry and protect mangrove forests Based on the desk study, interview experts, group discussions and households surveyed, the study points out mainly problems that need to be addressed for sustainable development of this system in the future Regarding integrated rice shrimp farming systems (3), the research was carried out by taking a survey with 82 households in Thoi Binh district in 2021 The integrated riceshrimp farming system is considered as a strategy for sustainable development to deal with the problem of saline intrusion in the coastal areas of the MD However, the study indicated that the system is not successful as expected because the profit is low and rice crops completely depend on natural conditions The profit is lower than integrated mangrove shrimp production models The comparison between two systems in the fourth objective (4) to find out key advantages and problems Integrated mangrove shrimp and rice shrimp farming systems are very suitable in the natural condions of coastal areas, especially towards small scale farmers The research, however, also found out that mangrove shrimp is more sustainable and profitable in shrimp production than rice shrimp farm systems All things considered, the research emphasizes that (1) integrated shrimp farming system is a sustainable system that should be considered to apply for coastal areas of the Mekong Delta; (2) Mangrove shrimp farming systems is the best strategy to ensure the development of the shrimp industry and protecting mangroves; (3) Rice farming is ! vii! considered as sustainable system in the future but to develop this system, it should be considered problems including water resources, the quality of shrimp seed and rice varieties, and the market; (4) Mangrove shrimp farming is more stability than rice shrimp farming (5) To achieve sustainable development, the Vietnamese government should address problems and have suitable policies for each system to promote and ensure the long-term development of the shrimp industry./ ! viii!
