Indianapolis Honorary Degrees Doctor of Engineering Robert A Compton Venture Investor, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Memphis, Tennessee Robert Compton has provided executive leadership, fmancial support and new venture expertise leading to the growth of successful businesses ranging from an international medical device company to more than a dozen new technology firms He began his career with Telenet Communications before joining the IBM Corp as a systems engineer After earning an MBA from the Harvard Business School, Compton served as director of sales and marketing for Boston-based Zoom Telephonics, which was started at Massachusetts Institute of Technology He entered the venture capital business as an investment manager with First Chicago Venture Capital Four years later, Compton joined CID Equity Partners in Indianapolis As a general partner, Compton was involved in financing and building new high-technology companies throughout the Midwest In 1997, Compton became group president for operations of Sofamor Danek Group, a medical device company in Memphis, Tenn He was subsequently promoted to president and chief operating officer With more than $400 million in sales, Sofamor Danek became the world's largest supplier of medical devices, computer-assisted surgery products and biologics for spinal surgery The company was purchased by Medtronic, Inc and Compton was named president of the Medtronic Neurologic Technologies division That division was a market leader in cranial neurosurgery with $190 million in sales Compton is now investing in and mentoring very early stage technology companies He serves as chairman of four private companies-Mezzia, Nolnk Communications, ExactTarget and Sci-Tech Adventures Compton is on the Board of Directors of several non-profit organizations involved in national efforts to improve education and promote entrepreneurship They include the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Interactive Academy, and Exchange City USA In 1994, he was presented with the Chauncey Rose Medal by Rose-Hulman for his contributions to the American free enterprise system In 1996, he was elected to the Rose-Hulrnan Board of Trustees Doctor of Engineering B Guille Cox, Jr Senior Partner-Cox, Zwerner, Gambill & Sullivan Terre Haute, Indiana A member of the Rose-Hulrnan Board of Trustees since 1985, Guille Cox served as chairman of the board from 1995 to 2001 He was vice chairman of the board and chairman of its executive committee for five years He is part of a family legacy of dedicated support to Rose-Hulman_that dates back to the founding of the college One of his ancestors, Josephus Collett, drafted the documents establishing the institute and was chairman of the Board of Managers, the governing body of the college Another ancestor, Robert Sayre Cox, served on the Board for several years just after the turn of the century Guille Cox's father, Benjamin, served for seven years until 1975 as chairman of the Rose-Hulman Board of Managers, and was instrumental in assisting with the transfer of the Bulman Foundation gift to the college During Guille's tenure as the Board's vice chairman, he helped lead the institute in the transition to coeducation, and assisted in doubling the size of the campus While Cox was Board Chairman, Rose-Hulman achieved unprecedented campus facility improvements, success in fund-raising, and the college earned its first No ranking in its educational category in U.S News & World Report Two more consecutive No rankings by the magazine were achieved during his term as chairman Cox earned a bachelor of science degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968 He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Harvard Law School in 1971 He returned to his hometown of Terre Haute in 1971 to begin his law career with Cox, Zwerner, Gambill & Sullivan where he is now a senior partner Cox has earned the highest possible professional rating by his peers in Martindale Hubbell His law practice is in estate planning, trusts, probate, business and real estate law Cox serves as chairman of the Board for Hendrich Title Co., the largest title company in west central Indiana He is a member of the Board of Directors of First Financial Corp and its chief subsidiary, Terre Haute First National Bank, where he is chairman of its trust committee Cox has served as president of the Board of Directors for the Terre Haute Salvation Army, and the Board of Overseers of the Swope Art Museum He has been president of the local Exchange and Sertoma service clubs, and served on the board of director~ of the Children's Science and Technology Museum of Terre Haute, and the Rose Southside Day Care Center Doctor of Engineering Scott A Jones Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Escient Technologies, LLC Indianapolis, Indiana Scott Jones and the companies he has developed have made significant contributions to technology worldwide He is a pioneer in the development of voice-message technologies, and a leader in Indiana's efforts to improve the business environment to promote the growth of high-tech companies in Indiana Jones co-founded and chaired until 1992 his first company, Boston Technology, which became very successful using patented voice-messaging technologies The company merged with Comverse Technologies resulting in a multibillion dollar company whose products continue to rely on Jones' patented technologies At the helm of Indianapolis-based Escient Technologies, Jones applies his business and technical expertise toward leading a company that is merging Internet power with electronic appliances and devices Escient Technologies, which Jones co-founded in 1996, is a high-technology management company that channels promising new technologies into strategic positions in the marketplace Escient's five affiliate companies offer high-tech products and services for home entertainment, data storage and the Internet Jones is also leading activities to establish Indiana as a nationally recognized high-technology region He serves as chairman of the Indiana Technology Partnership, the Gazelle Fund and Growindiana Media Ventures He serves on the boards of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the Art Technology Group, UNX, the Indianapolis Zoo and the Indianapolis Children's Museum He has received the CyberStar Award from the Indiana Information Technology Association for outstanding contributions to the technology industry In 2000, Rose-Hulman presented Jones with the Chauncey Rose Medal for his contributions to the free entetprise system Doctor of Humane Letters Susan Porter Rose Former Deputy Assistant to President George H.W Bush and Chief of Staff to Barbara Bush McLean, Virginia Susan Porter Rose served as deputy assistant to United States President George H.W Bush and chief of staff to Barbara Bush for the years of the Bush presidency and in the same capacity during the eight years of the Bush vice presidency She is one of only two persons in history to have served three First Ladies in a senior capacity Her 17-year White House career began as assistant director of correspondence to Patricia Nixon in 1971 Rose later became appointment secretary from 1972 to 1974 She served as appointment secretary and director of scheduling for Betty Ford through the presidency of Gerald Ford During the administration of President Jimmy Carter, she served at the Justice Department as assistant to the assistant attorney general of the Office for Improvements in the Administration of Justice and to the deputy assistant attorney general for administration Since leaving the White House, she has served on the United States Commission of Fine Arts and the board of the Bush Presidential Library Rose earned a bachelor's degree in English from Earlham College and the master's degree in English from Indiana State University Both institutions have presented her with distinguished alumni awards Immediately after college, she worked on the Washington staff of Indiana Congressman Richard Roudebush Prior to joining the White House staff, Rose was assistant director of admissions at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and for two years served as assistant dean at George School near Philadelphia Rose has also been inducted into the Indiana Academy Indiana citizens are elected to the Academy in recognition of their contributions to cultural, scientific, literary, civic, religious or educational development in the state Doctor of Engineering Ralph W Stahl President Stahl Engineering Company Indianapolis, Indiana Ralph Stahl has made important contributions to engineering and education through his leadership as a successful businessman and community volunteer Stahl graduated in 1934 from Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering His first job following graduation was as a domestic heating plant analysis and improvement engineer with Peoples Gas Co Stahl has worked for the A.C Nielsen Co and the Lindberg Engineering Co., where he was honored for his work in research, development and field service on heat treating equipment In 1939, Stahl founded the company in Indianapolis that bears his name Stahl Engineering Co designs, sells and services industrial heat processing equipment The company has completed installations totaling well over $150 million While continuing his company's growth, he also developed and sold three other successful businesses that ranged from an alloy fabricating company to an aluminum foundry and a business that provided funeral services His volunteer work spans more than 70 years In 1997, Stahl Engineering received the Community Service Award presented by the Indianapolis Scientific and Engineering Foundation He has served for over 50 years on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis Association Stahl helped establish the Keenan-Stahl Boys & Girls Club of Indianapolis He served as president of the Hoosier Area Council of the Boy's Club of America and was awarded the Bronze Keystone Award for his dedicated service In cooperation with the World Health Organization, Stahl made it possible for two basic radiology systems to be sent to Kenya, Africa, where two test installations were conducted These units served as a model for thousands of similar installations throughout the world He is currently working with the Greater Educational Opportunity Organization in Indianapolis to create a new independent school Stahl helped create and continues to support the Ruth Lilly Center for Health and Education Doctor of Humane Letters Katherine Y Utley Chair, Foreign Language Department North Vigo High School Terre Haute, Indiana Katherine Utley has distinguished herself as an exceptional educator who has a passion for teaching and for continuing her own professional development Utley has taught English and Latin classes at Terre Haute North Vigo High School for 31 of her 33 years as an educator She has served as chair of the foreign language department at the high school since 1992 Utley has coached North Vigo High School Spell Bowl teams to a state championship, a second place and two, third-place finishes in eight years Her contributions to improving education include designing curricula for freshman honors English and twelve Advanced Placement classes Her honors as an exceptional educator include receiving the Rose-Hulman Outstanding High School Teacher Award in 1992, the WTHI-TV Golden Apple Award in 1990, and the Excellence in Education awards from the NAACP and the Vigo County School Corp She has received four National Endowment of Humanities Fellowships to study classical literature, American literature, Shakespeare and Greek tragedy at institutions ranging from Stanford University to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C Utley graduated magna cum laude in 1969 from Indiana State University earning a bachelor's degree in English and Latin She has also received the master's degree in education from ISU She has continued her education beyond the master's level with a focus on gifted and talented education Utley has had several poems published and has been a speaker at teaching seminars sponsored by the American Classical League, Tufts University and Rose-Hulman She has been inducted into Sigma Tau Delta and Eta Sigma Phi, English and classical honorary societies, respectively Fifty-Year Commemorative Degrees For one hundred and twenty-eight years, Rose-Hulman alumni have been making positive contributions to society as engineers and scientists Success has not been limited to their career areas They serve their local communities through civic organizations, youth activities and churches Much of the recognition Rose-Hulman enjoys today is because of our alumni Rose-Hulman graduates make an impact Their achievements as engineers, scientists and concerned citizens translate into a reputation of quality for their alma mater Today, we 25,2001 November 19, 2001 February 25,2002 THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION In today's academic processsion, the gown and hood indicate the degree held by the wearer The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree Graduates of certain institutions wear gowns in the color of the university, although black is the basic color of the majority of academic gowns The doctor's gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve The velvet may be black or may be the color which represents the field in which the
