Elementa1y Educ.ation A.t~E LINDER BA Secon dary Education, Biology Deciding to further your education is a life changing decision It is a special journey for each and every person who makes this decision I began pursuing my elemental)• education degree at G.-eat Basin College in 2006 right after I graduated from high school Due to several circumstances beyond my control, I had to take a break from college I was only four classes and student teaching shy of completing my degree It was so hard stopping when I was so close to graduating, but in the end, it worked out to be the best decision I have two passions, learning and science G.-eat Basin College' s Education Program was the perfect fit for me because it combined my two passions into a single career, teaching The Education Program at GBC is an excellent teacher prep program I completed the program feeling competent in my content area as well as the various aspects of education The instructors and faculty that make up the Education Department is the number one \Vhen I finally returned in spring of 2015 I was greeted with a reason the program has become so successful new education instructor Teresa Stauffer was like a breath of The instructors spend cowitless hours ensuring fresh air She brought so much passion and excitement to the their student's needs ha\·e been met, by program I was beyond excited to return and lmish my classes providing students with excellent instruction after meeting with her During student teaching, I had the opportunity to work with Tom Reagan and Teresa Stauffer They and academic advising The faculty in the were a wonderful team and each shared an invaluable amowit of department are very helpful They always knowledge with us They provided immense support, immediate supply students with essential information about the program and scholarship feedback offered meaningful suggestions, and guided us to opportunities This program does a great job of become distinguished student teachers I am eternally grateful I emphasizing peer interaction through had the opportWlity to learn and teach under their guidance discussion and reflection My peers were very supportive and helped me grow as a student 1\ow that I have graduated and recei\·ed my license, I plan to and an educator during my time at GBC The accept a position as soon as my youngest child starts Education Program at GBC will always hold a Kindergarten I am very fortunate to ha\'e been already offered special place in my heart It has made my se\·eral positions at Flag View Intermediate and Northside dream career become a reality In addition the Elementary I would love to work with students in the 5th grade and younger After se\·eral years in the classroom I would like to program has provided me with resources and get my Gifted and Talented endorsement and eventually teach in friendships that will last a lifetime the GT program Great Basin College Teacher Ed Programs Elementary BA with focus in ELAD Can be coupled programs in the NSHE work closely together addressing licensing issues, program development, etc Program framework for GBC and NSC were initially modeled after the university programs, including common course numbering NSHE institutions follow the six indicators of quality from the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education: 0 0 0 High admissions standards High GPA in major Intensive preparation in subject-specific methods Extensive practice in teaching opportunities Semester long or year long clinical teaching experience High student satisfaction and employer satisfaction in the early career years 11 Alignment with School Districts and Workforce Demands ~ GBC and UNR partner to host a Rural Education Summit which gathers stakeholders from the rural districts, Nevada Department of Education, Board of Regents, and industry ~ GBC created the Alternative Route to Licensure program in partnership with the rural districts to address the immediate shortage in the teacher pipeline We continually modify it to meet the needs of the districts 12 Barriers in the Teacher Pipeline ~ Interest in the profession ~ Many reasons exist for the national enrollment decline in teacher preparation programs Nevada's commitment to the Teach Nevada Scholarship program allows GBC to change the narrative that the profession is valued, and increase recruitment Continued development in the first years of teaching ° Funding for NSHE programs is driven by student credit hours, so resources are scarce to impact graduates after they enter the profession GBC is strengthening partnerships with the Northeastern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program to mentor first year teachers and ARL candidates Continued funding for the RPDPs is critical 13 ... ~ COLLEGE OF SOUTHERNNEVADA NEVADA STATE Great Basin College Dr Rochelle Hooks, Chair, Education Department C Tom Reagan, Dean, Arts & Sciences College of EDUCATION Dr Doris Watson,
