Middle-Level Education (AMLE) for her work with students at Colegio Americano de Guatemala Her project started as an AUNE practicum which she then developed into a service learning project to use in her professional career Her focus was to bring her middle-school students into rural areas of Guatemala and expose them to the realities of poverty that surrounded their international and more Evarts and their colleagues at the University of Denver, published an article in Training and Education in Professional Psychology titled Mentoring in clinical psychology programs: Broadening and deepening Their article, focused on recommendations for mentors to enhance the training of clinical psychology graduate students, won the 2018 Most Valuable Contribution to Professional Development, Bailes Hart was the guest speaker at the Brattleboro Inclusion Center Her public discussion included how to find a therapist that works for you, what therapy can look like, and the many different UNIVERSITY SANTA BARBARA INTRODUCES “KEEP LOCALS LOCAL” INITIATIVE AUSB recently received a $5000 grant from Wells Fargo, the first in a series of grants sought to support the “Keep Locals, Local” Initiative AUSB will award scholarships to two high school students who had participated in the Pathway to Effective Access to College (PEAC) program while attending high school in the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) Specifically, PEAC is a pathway to support English learners in SBUSD For more go here AUNE | ALUM CYNTHIA SEIVWRIGHT APPOINTED TO U.S POLICY COMMITTEE Cynthia Seivwright, Antioch Alum and a local leader in addressing substance use and addiction, has been appointed to a national committee upon the recommendation of Vermont Governor Phil Scott “[Cynthia] is a leader in our work to advance alcohol and drug prevention, treatment, and recovery,” said Scott “While there is much we can continue to improve on, Vermont has been a leader, nationally, in these Leadership and Change (GSLC) is pleased to announce the founding of a new research fund to support doctoral students in the PhD in Leadership and Change program The Valentine Action Research Fund has been established by GSLC alumnus Dr Mike Valentine to honor the legacy of his father, James C Valentine, better known as Ping As a New York City firefighter and longtime member of the Shriners, Ping believed deeply in lifting up his community by reaching out to troubled youth and mentoring them His actions and service to those in need exemplify the spirit of making a difference one person at a time and they underscore the value of action, in the form of action research, that engages people in inquiry and action.With this generous founding family gift, $2,000 a year for the life of the fund will be available to support costs incurred by PhDLC students conducting approved action research dissertations with underserved populations Two research grants of up to $1,000 each are available each academic year “Underserved populations” refers to communities within the United States or abroad that suffer from poverty and disparities in education, employment, health and/or other indicators of EDUCATION MASTER’S STUDENT FINDS A BALANCE OF “MINDFULNESS” IN TEACHING SPECIAL ED AND COACHING FOOTBALL Joshua Reitzenstein, was working as a Title reading instructor and coaching football in the afternoons when a phone call altered the course of his career path “I had taken the CSET and was beginning to think about becoming a classroom teacher That summer, while exploring the backcountry of and Contemporary Media hosted a conversation with award-winning writer and producer Felicia D Henderson After beginning her writing career in sitcoms like Family Matters, Moesha, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, and Sister, Sister; Henderson turned her attention to television drama writing and received three NAACP Best Drama Awards for Soul Food, television’s first long-running multi-season drama featuring African Americans She received a Gracie Allen Award for her depiction of women and a Prism Award for Accurate Depictions of Social Issues She also garnered a Writers Guild of America (WGA) Social Justice (DSJ) announced its new, team-based structure beginning the spring 2020 semester The leadership structure will include Kate Evarts Rice, Dean Hammer, Karen Meteyer, Monique Bowen, and Vince Pignatiello The five groups supported by the DSJ this semester include the Affinity Group for Race and Ethnicity (AGRE), the Affinity Group for Immigrants and Refugees, the Affinity Group for writing classes and writing coaching, is now part of Antioch’s University-wide extended education programs Once part of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at the Los Angeles campus, Inspiration2Publication is under the broad supervision of Dr Terry Ratcliff, Provost for Distance and Extended Education Designed to appeal to writers at all stages of their career, from raw beginners to experienced professionals working on their second or third books, Inspiration2Publication offers two and four-week classes, one-on-one tutoring and book coaching The generative classes help age, he moved from cities and military bases to the free-ranged sprawling greenery of the eastern state The New England landscape imprinted on Hafford immediately These days Hafford has a PsyD in clinical psychology from Antioch University and works in adventure therapy Maine is still a key ingredient in Hafford’s practice, and that’s where you’ll find him most days–canoeing, hiking, climbing, Youth Counseling Services, which provides free and unlimited mental health services to LGBTQ-identified youth under the age of 25, had a milestone year in 2019 It celebrated a partnership with L.A Care that will help to hire an additional clinical supervisor In addition, COLORS held a fundraising Soireé It was hosted by actor Charlie Carver, who is best known for his roles on Desperate Housewives and the LGBT history mini-series When We Rise Carver has been praised for using his platform to advocate for LGBTQ rights and is slated to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign During the Soireé, which was attended by Chancellor Bill Groves, COLORS’ founding committee member and Director of Community Benefits at L.A Care Roland Palencia spoke of the importance of supporting organizations like COLORS The capstone project of an Antioch student and member of one of the first LGBT Specialization cohorts, COLORS has provided counseling for over 5,000 youth Learn more about dedicated to quality education and supervision of counselors in all work settings The AUS Counseling Department sponsored and faculty members presented at the 2019 ACES National Conference that was held in Seattle Chair & Core Faculty, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Dr Katherine Fort and Keiko Sano lead the discussion on the importance of making invisible multicultural dialogs visible in all Klocksiem organized a panel called Queer and Geeky Educators Q&A for GeekGirlCon, an event in downtown Seattle that empowers girls to pursue their “geeky’ passions, whatever they might be The panel included educators from a variety of backgrounds who are equally passionate about education and geek culture They discussed their paths to the field of education, as well as their queer identities within education PsyD faculty Dr Dana Waters served on the panel For more information go here AULA | USING POETRY AS VEHICLE FOR CHANGE For Margaret Kean, poetry has always been a part of her But finding the courage to write and share it with the world, has taken a long time The MFA in Creative Writing Program at Antioch has given her the courage to find and reveal her voice As a child, Kean read poetry, and in college, she majored in British and American literature, but she says she was too shy to try writing poetry After college, she worked in public relations for 17 years, where she wrote stories and press releases During the last 22 years she’s worked in fundraising and nonprofit management where she writes grants and proposals At home, she has always kept a journal But none of that was the kind of writing her heart desired For more go here AULA | AULA JOINED 35TH ANNUAL KINGDOM DAY PARADE “Equality For All Humanity, Our Next Step” was the theme of Los Angeles’ 35th Annual Kingdom Day Parade on January 20, 2020 For the second year, the AULA community joined more than 300 parade walkers on King Blvd to honor Dr Martin Luther King, Jr More than 30 Antioch students, alumni, faculty, and community members wore t-shirts with Antioch College Alumna Coretta Scott King’s image and her quote, “Struggle is a never-ending process Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” Read more and view an album of photos from the parade here AUSB | SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (SBIFF) The 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival was January 15 through January 25, 2020 AUSB partnered with SBIFF’s educational programs and had an on-screen ad appear prior to the 400+ film screenings during the highly attended ten-day festival FACULTY AND STUDENTS PRESENT RESEARCH POSTER AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE Dr Denzel Jones, Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT) Assistant Professor, along with Pia Alexander and Amelia Flynn, second-year MA MFT students, presented their research at the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas Their research, The Impact of Socialization Agents’ Ethnic-Racial Identity on Communication and Socialization Processes, focuses on the ethnic-racial identity (ERI) of Black emerging adults and their communication processes as socializing agents (SAs) Read about their findings here AUS | SCHOOL OF EDUCATION HOSTS SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING WORKSHOP The School of Education recently hosted a powerful, interactive event focused on Social Emotional Learning Attended by over 50 faculty, students, and alumni, the event was titled, Orienting Social Emotional Learning Towards Equity and was facilitated by Dr Deepa Bhandaru Dr Bhandaru is an educator and writer in Seattle She earned her PhD in political science from the University of Washington, where she specialized in political theory and cultural studies She’s passionate about communitybased education and recently held a graduation ceremony and celebration for the Fall 2018 Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) cohort The room was filled with over 70 faculty, staff, family members, friends, and mentor teachers of the graduates The graduation ceremony was a joyous event Each graduate had a chance to give words of inspiration and gratitude and all were celebrated for the hard work, dedication, and
