OF THE SACRED HEART IN BROTHER MARTIN 2017 - 2018 NEW ORLEANS ADMISSIONS VIEW BOOK BROTHERS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Brother Martin High School is to form young people through a holistic education that fosters academic excellence in a caring, disciplined community which integrates Catholic tradition and the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to meet the needs of a changing world “ WE ARE NOT HERE TO TEACH boys how to make a living BUT HOW TO MAKE A LIFE.” - Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C 1904 - 1991 Brothers of the Sacred Heart - In New Orleans Since 1869 Quality Catholic Education for boys 8th - 12th grade Pictured Left: Ryan Gallagher '00 - Principal Our Philosophy BROTHER MARTIN The 149-year educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart is grounded in a holistic approach to education We believe that young persons learn from their total experience of the school setting The most important aspect of any Catholic education is the development of Christian values and the transmission of the Catholic heritage OUR HISTORY Brother Martin is a private Catholic school offering a college preparatory curriculum for boys in grades through 12 The school has a lay and religious faculty, and is under the direction of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, an international religious order founded in 1821 by Father André Coindre in Lyons, France Our efforts to have religion spread through the school include campus In September of 1969, celebrating the 100th year of educational commitment to the youth of the New Orleans area, ministry programs, modeling of religious values, service with others, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart consolidated St Aloysius (1869-1969) and Cor Jesu (1954-1969) high schools under and religious activities and symbols in the school the title of Brother Martin High School We advocate an orderly and disciplined environment that is respectful, In selecting the name, the Brothers honored one of their own His contributions to the Brothers and to education consistent and fair, and based on a relationship of mutual trust and cooperation are inscribed on the plaque in the lobby of the school: Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C., a Brother of the Sacred Heart whose lifetime of dedicated service to the youth of New Orleans is perpetuated by this building To promote an environment characterized by Christian concern and friendly discipline, we give our personal attention to developing open and genuine relationships with our students and parents through opportunities outside of class time and in less formal settings We view academic excellence as the development of our students to the maximum of their potential We establish a demanding curriculum, provide interesting lessons, and continually adapt our curriculum to help St Aloysius 1869 - 1969 Cor Jesu 1954 - 1969 Brother Martin 1969 - Present our students become the persons God created them to be “The character and personality of Brother Martin High School is not determined merely by our buildings, but rather by the students and faculty who walk the hallways everyday Our entire school community personifies the educational charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.” Greg Rando ’77 - Executive Vice President of Brother Martin High School WITNESS Ametur Cor Jesu Integration of Faith and Life The primary goal of our religious education and campus ministry programs is to enable students to integrate their faith with their daily living Through classroom and service activities, the students’ experiences are examined in the light of faith, and emphasis is placed on applying religious values in students’ lives Spiritual Formation The religious life of the school and the spiritual development of students are the responsibility of all members of the school community We consider the leadership of the religion department and the campus ministry staff to be vital in the expression of the religious mission of the school Campus ministry staff and religion department members serve as role models and resources to other faculty and staff so that the mission of the school can be better accomplished Values in the Curriculum Christian values are inherent in all disciplines Through the articulation of these values and through efforts to discover the mystery of God’s self-revelation in all branches of learning, the teacher brings a Christian perspective to the classroom We believe that classroom prayer is a means of making students more conscious of the presence of God in creation, in daily events, in other, and in the learning process Campus Ministry Program We base our campus ministry program on the belief that each person has unique gifts from God to use in building a school faith community which is firmly rooted in Catholic spirituality and tradition In campus ministry, we aim to complement parents or guardians in their primary role as religious educators, to support the parish as a center of Catholic life, and to extend the religion lessons of the classroom to lived faith experiences In our campus ministry program, we recognize the many gifts of the Spirit within our students, faculty, and staff, and call forth those gifts for service and ministry to the school community and to the church INSTRUCTION 35 AP Scholars In every aspect of the college preparatory curriculum, Brother Martin High School strives to provide educational opportunities to enhance the growth and development of its students Each student is encouraged to plan his own academic course selections with assistance from his teachers, guidance counselor, and parents Students enrolled in all four honors courses during their sophomore year are invited to participate in the Honors Program of Studies where they are required to continue taking honors or Advanced Placement courses in credit requirements at each grade level 2017 -
