Finding the Common Ground Between Science and Spirituality somebody’s prophet less prophetic, and somebody’s community less righteous and deserving “How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, ‘This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, and more elegant’? Instead, they say, ‘No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.’ A religion, old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the Universe as revealed by modern science might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths.” (8) Do we not confront the problem of teaching the complexities and intricacies of both physics and spirituality with equal veracity? If we can teach Einstein’s theory of general relativity, why can’t we use today’s logic and reason to establish the Absolute as the underlying truth of all existence, just as the energy of physics is the underlying reality of all matter? Is energy not indescribable as is the Absolute of metaphysics? Surely, not everyone can understand the theory of relativity, but does that mean that those who can should be kept ignorant of it? Do we teach different perspectives about physics instead of the truths that our scientists have painstakingly discovered? For a story about the existence of the whole world to be believable, it must be true Truth is also a requirement for meaningfulness If truthfulness is not fully established in our minds, then it doesn’t become meaningful in the heart In that case, a person latches on to what they have been told is true or, worse, they latch onto half-truths and those thoughts drive the person’s behavior in the world 51
