A Message from the Dean Dear Class of 2006, To my real surprise, it has been almost three years since we encountered each other in the front hall of the Law School on August 17, 2003 I was standing near the front doors blocking your path till you shook my hand and got a W&M Law School bumper sticker You have been the first class to enjoy the North Wing throughout your stay at Marshall-Wythe, and the first class to have Justice Sandra Day O’Connor as your Chancellor You are the class that will have her as your graduation speaker (a real coup for ’06) And, of course, your class was catalytic in getting the school moving toward “high stall” restrooms, badly needed for decades and finally built thanks to you You’ve stayed long enough to see our new law library rise from the earth, but you’ll get out of Dodge before we begin noisily gutting the old library to rebuild it as a seamless part of the new whole Your timing is impeccable Your class gift effort has been extraordinary It will help feed the Law School’s Loan Repayment Assistance Program, a vital new initiative William & Mary had by far the largest number of law students (228) among the eight Virginia law schools who pledged hours as part of the Virginia Bar Association’s Community Service/Pro Bono Service Program Our bone marrow fundraising was successful this year at a record level On these fronts and many others, with your class leading the way, citizen lawyers are alive and well at Marshall-Wythe 226 years after Thomas Jefferson and George Wythe created a law school to produce them Virtually all our student organizations (those that have been around for eons, those born in 2005/06, and those in between) have been in full cry during your third year, which means while you were at the forefront of most of them Our student government, journals, moot court, trial team, to name just a few, have been made a real difference for the better this academic year This has been a year rich with events – symposia, conferences, visiting speakers, and other happenings We could spend most of our time savoring what’s served daily on these fronts Early last fall we had General Zinni here as the Carter Lowance Fellow, and as the year winds down we had the Chief Judge of the State of New York, Judith Kaye, here as our Marshall-Wythe Medallion recipient The U.S Court of Appeals for the Continued on pg 14 “to foster a spirit of careful study and to mark in a fitting manner those who have attained a high grade of scholarship” in the study of law The English Order of the Coif was the most ancient and one of the most honored institutions of the common law Its origins may antedate the Norman Conquest The American Order of the Coif was founded in 1912 Membership in it is the highest academic honor a law student may achieve It is equivalent to membership in Phi Beta Kappa for undergraduates, recognizing the scholastic achievement of students selected from the upper ten percent of their class AWARDS GIVEN AT GRADUATION The Citizen Lawyer Award This award honors a graduate or friend of the Law School who stands squarely in the Jeffersonian tradition of outstanding citizenship and leadership The Walter L Williams Jr Memorial Teaching Award This annual award is named in honor of the late Professor Walter L Williams Jr., who died in 1991 The winner is selected by the graduating class The Lawrence W I’Anson Award The Lawrence W I’Anson Award is presented annually to a member of the graduating class who in the judgment of the Law School faculty has shown evidence of great professional Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia and first President of the Board of Directors of the National Center for State Courts The George Wythe and John Marshall Awards These awards have been made possible through the generosity of William & Mary graduates Robert Friend Boyd and Sara Miller Boyd The Wythe and Marshall Awards recognize exceptional character, leadership and selfless service to the Law School community The Wythe Award goes to a member of the law school student body and the Marshall Award to a member of the faculty or staff The Thurgood Marshall Award Given annually by the of distinguished public service exemplified by Justice Marshall 6 Dear Jennifer, Nicole, David, Nick, and Raj: Thank you for all your hard work in bringing news and entertainment to Marshall-Wythe every fortnight We will miss you tremendously, but we will take solace in the fact that you’ll be bringing news and entertainment, in one way or another, to the real world Lord knows it could use your wit and vim Best wishes, Kelly, Myriem, Tara, Will and the rest of The Advocate staff Nicole, Nick, Raj, David, and Jen: You guys set the best kind of example for the rest of us Your heart, your energy, and most of all your good humor through all things were an inspiration - always The Advocate will miss you muchly, and so will I Cheers, Myr PS - Nicole, you are, of course, exceedingly fabulous Nicole - You were editor extraordinaire, master of the photo montage, and sex educator to 600 law students Those will be some tough heels for Will to fill David - Muckraking news at the law school was no easy task, but you must have been undercover on Wednesday nights Thanks for sacrificing so many Friday afternoons to editing Raj - Chaachaajee and so much more Your creativity and free spirit will be sorely missed I hear the toaster in the lounge is not giving anymore exclusive interviews Nick - ARRGH matey, what would a newspaper be without a pirate at the helm of copy editing? - Kelly Joanne Pereira Wednesday, April 19, 2006 Dear Graduating Eds: I can’t believe it was almost two years ago when I first met you all I was a wideeyed 1L, and you were seasoned second-years You welcomed me aboard the good ship Advocate, quickly making me a member of the crew and putting me to work scrubbing the Features deck I still remember writing my first article covering last year’s SBA softball tournament I think I just went ahead and wrote it because I thought I should, since I was going to be there anyway and since I had some sports coverage experience Imagine my surprise days later seeing Jennifer’s parallel story on the same event! It was then I realized that our beloved little paper did not have any delusions of grandeur We were all law students putting a newspaper together on the side, and that was just fine, thank you very much You all taught me to have fun with the newspaper—to take the job of bringing news and features to the law school seriously, but not too seriously Nicole, your columns were an inspiration Fortunately, they did not literally inspire me to anything Hearing about the Victoria’s Secret annual sale was quite enough for me But your stylish and humorous take on the age old topic always got people picking up the paper, and I always admired it You were also a selfless and effortless leader these past two years You leave a strong legacy, and I hope to it justice Thanks Jennifer, your business savvy and BLAWGing ability are unmatched—only when I attempted to write a BLAWG or two myself did I realize just how much of an art form it was Thank you for keeping the paper in the black—it helps us print in both black and white and in color! David, your workmanlike approach to the news is inspiring Maybe that sounds strange, given your California ’tude, dude, but it’s true I was always impressed with your ability to cover, either by delegating to others or writing yourself, the important events on campus You never let us see you sweat Thanks for lending that to the paper Wherever the future takes you, keep it up Nick, your sharp eye and even sharper wit are tremendous assets Thank you for sharing them with us for a while I hope you’re able to share them with the wider world (and maybe even get paid for it) Raj, your friendship and Features leadership have been important and enjoyable aspects of my law school experience From Sikhism to Queen to metaphysics to Koko the gorilla, you can always speak or write knowledgably and effectively about just about anything Your passion and humor are contagious Thank you for making the world a more honest and happy place As I prepare to take over the helm next year, I have begun to appreciate more fully all you have done for the paper over the past few years I thank you for giving me and the rest of the law school a publication better off than when you found it More than your talents and abilities, though, I will miss your company and friendship I wish you all the best in your future endeavors When you all become successful, as I’m sure you will be, please don’t be strangers For everything you’ve given to The Advocate, thank you Fondly, William Y Durbin The Green Leafe Café Congratulates the Class of 2006! Your approach to law school has been robustly healthy, and it’s made you an unusually collegial group During Opening Rites for your class in the Commonwealth Auditorium at the University Center, I mentioned that your relationship with the law School would last for a relatively brief time on campus and then continue off campus for the rest of your lives From now on, being a graduate of William & Mary Law School will be an important part of your identity Please stay in touch with your legal alma mater and with the friends you’ve made while here Each of you leaves with my very best wishes Those of us whom you leave behind will truly miss you Friends and Graduates, You are truly a remarkable class It has been my privilege to be the classroom instructor to many of you, and also to work with you on moot court and law journals, to see you as you practice trial advocacy, work at the local jail, provide pro bono assistance to the less fortunate In every one of these endeavors you have shown yourselves to be extraordinarily caring and talented individuals I wish you much happiness and good fortune as you move beyond law school, you certainly deserve it!
