Working by the Seat of your Pants

Archaeological findings indicate that the earliest humanoid ancestors originated in Eastern Africa, where Mary and Louis Leakey dedicated years to uncovering fossilized remains The challenge of locating tiny fossilized bones is significant, as only one in every hundred fossils is a hominid specimen Our understanding of early human settlements largely relies on these meticulously excavated and analyzed fossilized remains by archaeologists.

This graphic novel tells the story of an archaeologist working in Eastern

Every morning in Africa, she rises early to search for fossilized remains Upon discovering a specimen, she meticulously brushes around it to reveal the fossil and gently extracts the fossilized bone from the earth.

At the campsite, it becomes evident that none of the fossils discovered belong to hominids However, their diligent efforts yield results when she unexpectedly uncovers what she has been searching for in an unforeseen location.

When scientists discover a fossilized bone, they follow a series of important steps to ensure proper analysis and preservation Initially, they carefully excavate the site to prevent damage, as this helps maintain the integrity of the fossil Next, they document the location and context of the find, which is crucial for understanding its geological and historical significance Afterward, they clean and stabilize the fossil to prevent deterioration, ensuring it remains intact for further study Finally, they analyze the fossil using various scientific methods to gain insights into the organism's biology and the environment it lived in Each of these steps is essential for accurately interpreting the fossil's significance and contributing to the broader understanding of paleontology.

Imagine being an archaeologist in eastern Africa, diligently searching for fossils but facing challenges in your quest With the financial sponsor growing increasingly impatient and threatening to withdraw funding without positive results, it's crucial to communicate the importance of the project Students should write a compelling letter to their sponsor, articulating the significance of the research and the potential breakthroughs that could arise from their continued efforts This project not only contributes to our understanding of ancient life but also has the potential to yield invaluable insights into human history.

The Silk Road, developed between 200 B.C and A.D 100, was a significant caravan route spanning approximately 4,000 miles from China to the Roman Empire Originating in the city of Changan, it traversed central Asia to Mesopotamia, earning its name due to silk being China's most valuable export Goods were transported by people and camels through challenging mountainous and desert landscapes, ultimately reaching Antioch, a key port city on the Mediterranean Sea.

In Antioch, present-day Syria, a vibrant trade occurred where luxury goods from the West were exchanged for those from the East, facilitating shipments across the Mediterranean to Greece and Rome The Silk Road primarily transported these high-value items, as the journey via camel caravans was challenging, perilous, and costly.

The Silk Road served as the ancient equivalent of the Internet, acting as a vital link that connected distant cultures and communities This extensive trade network facilitated not only the exchange of goods but also the sharing of knowledge about diverse societies, fostering a greater understanding among people from different backgrounds.

In this narrative, a Roman buyer embarks on a journey along the Silk Road, encountering a whirlwind of merchants eager to sell their goods, which mirrors the overwhelming experience of a first-time Internet user Just as the buyer navigates the bustling market filled with diverse offerings, a new Internet user faces a barrage of information, including searches, instant messages, pop-up ads, and threats like e-mail viruses and identity theft This parallel highlights the challenges of adapting to unfamiliar environments, whether in ancient trade routes or the modern digital landscape.

Students should explore the similarities between the Silk Road and the Internet, identifying words, images, and themes that reflect the modern experience of online connectivity By drawing parallels between these two historical and contemporary networks, they can gain insights into how trade and communication have evolved while still serving similar purposes in facilitating exchange and interaction in the twenty-first century.

Encourage students to explore the history of the Kushan Kingdom and the Silk Road by reviewing their textbook Prompt them to imagine themselves as travelers in the third century A.D and create a travel log detailing their experiences, including cultural interactions, discovering new goods, facing robberies, and dealing with various weather conditions Emphasize the importance of adopting perspectives from travelers of different countries to enrich their understanding of this historic trade route.

Mansa Musa, the ruler of Mali from 1312 to 1337, significantly expanded the empire, doubling its size and securing vital trade routes for gold and salt across Africa In 1324, he undertook a remarkable pilgrimage to Makkah, showcasing his wealth and power through an extravagant caravan that left a lasting impression on those he encountered This journey not only elevated Mansa Musa's status but also established Mali as a prominent player in the Muslim world.

Mansa Musa's legendary caravan, consisting of thousands of soldiers and servants alongside 80 camels laden with over two tons of gold, made a significant impact during his pilgrimage to Makkah Upon stopping in Cairo, he was warmly welcomed by the Sultan of Egypt, where his extravagant spending and generous gold gifts led to a notable decline in the value of gold Continuing his journey to Makkah, Musa was inspired to establish magnificent mosques, libraries, and universities upon his return He also brought back numerous Arab scholars, architects, and poets, transforming his hometown of Timbuktu into a prominent center for Islamic scholarship.

This graphic novel explores the lasting impact of Mansa Musa’s visit to Egypt, as experienced by a young boy profoundly influenced by the king's immense wealth and generosity Through the boy's memories, the narrative highlights how Mansa Musa's actions left an unforgettable mark on his life, illustrating the broader significance of this historical event.

Students should consider everyday products whose prices fluctuate based on supply availability, such as the correlation between oil supply and gasoline prices When supply increases, prices typically decrease, while a reduced supply often leads to higher prices.

Encourage students to examine the textbook section about Mansa Musa's reign, focusing on his initiatives to transform Timbuktu into a renowned center of learning and culture in Africa and the Middle East Prompt a discussion by asking if they can identify other rulers who invested significant resources or constructed monumental buildings to elevate their nation's status.

The Wrath of Genghis Kahn

The Mongol people, originally composed of various tribes in northwestern China and present-day Mongolia, were united under the rule of Genghis Khan, who is renowned for his military conquests His invasions expanded the Mongol Empire as his mounted soldiers swiftly overcame opposition in neighboring regions, solidifying his legacy as a formidable leader.

Temujin, later known as Genghis Khan, endured a challenging childhood marked by personal tragedies, which significantly influenced his future decisions and responses to later events This narrative explores the early experiences of his life and examines their impact on his character and leadership.

Temujin, raised in a divided Mongolian society consisting of around 30 distinct nomadic groups, faced a pivotal moment at the age of nine when the Tatar nomads poisoned his father, an event that left an indelible mark on his memory.

As Temujin matures, he forms a strategic alliance with the Kereyits, a prominent group among the Mongols Despite some discontent from members of both tribes regarding this partnership, Temujin's influence remains significant This alliance empowers Temujin and the Kereyits to successfully navigate challenges and opposition they face.

Temujin, who later became known as Genghis Khan, established himself as a powerful leader by uniting a vast territory in and around Mongolia Renowned for his significant influence, he was dedicated to conquest and committed to ensuring justice for the Mongolian people.

Students should explore the theory that Genghis Khan's actions were driven by a desire for revenge They can write a paragraph discussing their perspective on whether Genghis Khan was primarily motivated by revenge or by the ambition for world conquest, providing reasons to support their viewpoint.

Students should analyze the National Geographic Special Report “Genghis Khan: Lord of the Mongols” in their textbook, focusing on identifying the key factors that contributed to the strength of the Mongol army This exercise encourages critical thinking and comprehension of historical military strategies.

From the late fourteenth to the late seventeenth century, the traditional medieval worldview, rooted in scripture, was gradually supplanted by the Scientific Revolution Pioneering scientists like Galileo Galilei shifted away from biblical explanations, instead employing observation and experimentation to uncover the principles governing the natural world.

Aristotle's geocentric model, which positioned the Earth at the center of the universe with celestial bodies orbiting around it, dominated medieval thought However, Galilei, influenced by the astronomical findings of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, championed the heliocentric theory, asserting that the sun is at the center of the universe This stance led to significant backlash from the Catholic Church, which was already on edge due to the Protestant Reformation In 1632, Galilei faced severe consequences for his beliefs, resulting in house arrest and the condemnation of his teachings.

This graphic novel explores the conflict between Galileo Galilei's commitment to scientific verification and the Church's defense of traditional beliefs At 68 years old, Galileo endures a two-month wait for his trial, ultimately being found guilty of heresy for challenging the Church's doctrines As a consequence, he is compelled to recant his statements and is sentenced to house arrest for the remainder of his life.

Imagine being a guard tasked with escorting Galileo Galilei to the Inquisition As you walk alongside him, he poses questions about his fate and the motivations behind his arrest In response, you might express a sense of duty, emphasizing that you are simply following orders from higher authorities You might explain that the Church seeks to maintain its influence and control over scientific thought during this tumultuous time Your answers would reflect the tension between personal belief and institutional loyalty, highlighting the complex dynamics of power and knowledge in the era.

Galileo Galilei's endorsement of the heliocentric model marked a pivotal moment in the Scientific Revolution, a period characterized by remarkable intellectual breakthroughs To explore this era further, divide the class into groups of four, assigning each group the task of selecting another key figure who contributed significant discoveries during this transformative time Each group will collaborate to produce a comprehensive three-page report detailing their chosen individual's contributions and the significance of their scientific advancements.

In 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte commanded a Grand Army exceeding 600,000 soldiers into Russia after the country rejected his Continental System for trade governance This refusal prompted Napoleon to take decisive action to deter other nations from challenging his authority and the integrity of the Continental System.

On April 6, 1814, after a devastating loss of over 90 percent of his army in Russia, Napoleon was forced by an allied European army to abdicate the throne

Under the Treaty of Fontainebleau, he was exiled to Elba, an island near Tuscany, where he received a substantial annual stipend, retained his imperial title, and had a court of attendants, along with sovereign control over approximately 100,000 residents.

The Bourbon monarchy was reinstated in France with King Louis XVI at the helm, yet he faced significant lack of support Meanwhile, Napoleon, feeling restless during his exile on Elba, returned to France When soldiers were dispatched to apprehend him, he boldly proclaimed himself their Emperor, daring them to turn against their own leader.

In this manner, Napoleon won over the troops and entered Paris in triumph.

In 1815, Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium by a coalition of British and Prussian forces Following this defeat, he was exiled to St Helena, a remote island in the South Atlantic, where he lived until his death in 1821.

This narrative offers a fictional portrayal of Napoleon's exile on Elba, where he grapples with the mundane reality of governing a small island Disillusioned by his diminished status, he yearns for the grandeur and glory of his past as the Emperor of France.

In the graphic novel, Napoleon reflects on his past choices, expressing, “There are so many things I’d have done differently.” To engage students, divide them into groups of three and have them brainstorm five alternative actions they would take if they were in Napoleon's position during his exile to Elba Each group should justify their selections, fostering critical thinking and discussion about decision-making in historical contexts.

Students should examine the "Napoleon’s Domestic Policies" section of their textbook and identify key policy changes implemented by Napoleon After selecting one or two specific policies, they should compose a paragraph evaluating whether these changes were beneficial or detrimental, providing reasons for their opinions.

In the nineteenth century, European powers fiercely competed for control over Asian and African colonies, driven by various motives Economic interests played a significant role, as imperialist nations sought new territories to secure raw materials essential for their industrial growth and to establish markets for their manufactured goods Additionally, there was a desire to spread Western political and religious values to regions deemed "primitive" and in need of modernization Furthermore, acquiring colonies was viewed as a strategic move to gain superiority over rival nations, with many believing that true national greatness was unattainable without colonial possessions.

The narrative presents an "Imperialism Draft," where nations sequentially select territories to create their colonies, resembling the player selection process in professional sports drafts Commentators share insights and predictions regarding the choices made by various countries, offering intriguing historical context that elucidates the rationale behind these selections.

The humorous structure of the graphic novel serves as a backdrop to the significant motivations and decisions involved in the draft picks, which mirror the genuine choices and challenges faced during the process of colonization.

The humorous structure of the graphic novel contrasts with the significant motivations and decisions behind the draft picks, which mirror the genuine choices and realities of colonization.

Students are tasked with assuming the role of sportswriters for a local newspaper, where they will summarize the "Imperialism Draft" for the next day's edition They will assess the selections made during the draft and provide predictions regarding the potential value of the colonies, utilizing both the narrative details and relevant textbook information to support their evaluations.

Divide the class into groups to create a "Fantasy Colony" league, similar to fantasy sports leagues Each group will rank their colonies based on criteria such as natural resources, population, climate, and proximity to trade routes Finally, each group should compile a fantasy league of five colonies, providing justification for their selections.

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries marked a period of significant discovery and innovation, with influential figures like Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, and Sigmund Freud introducing groundbreaking scientific theories Their revolutionary ideas challenged the established scientific understanding of the time, leading to initial resistance and skepticism in the early 1900s.

In 1905, Albert Einstein introduced his groundbreaking theory of relativity, proposing that space and time are relative to the observer rather than absolute This revolutionary idea challenged the prevailing scientific beliefs by suggesting that gravity is not a universal constant Additionally, Einstein's assertion that matter is merely a different form of energy paved the way for the Atomic Age.

In 1898, Marie Curie discovered radium, an element that emitted radiation, revealing that this energy originated from within the atom Her findings challenged the prevailing beliefs about the fundamental components of the physical universe, suggesting that atoms were not the smallest particles known.

In 1898, Marie Curie discovered radium, an element that emitted radiation, revealing that this energy originated from within the atom This groundbreaking finding challenged the prevailing belief that atoms were the smallest particles in the universe, reshaping our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of matter.

In 1900, Sigmund Freud introduced his pivotal work, "The Interpretation of Dreams," where he proposed that human behavior is influenced by past experiences, particularly those that are repressed Freud's psychoanalysis method allows for the exploration of a patient's memories, helping to uncover and address these repressed emotions, ultimately facilitating healing.

In a science fair, renowned figures Einstein, Curie, and Freud face skepticism from judges who dismiss their innovative ideas, ultimately losing to more conventional entries This experience mirrors the challenges these scientists encountered in their own lives, highlighting the struggle of groundbreaking thinkers in a world that often resists new concepts.

Students should explore the initial skepticism of the scientific community towards the groundbreaking ideas of Einstein, Curie, and Freud Each paragraph should articulate the reasons these scientists were considered "ahead of their time," highlighting their innovative theories and the resistance they faced By analyzing the context of their work, students can better understand how these pioneers challenged established norms and ultimately transformed their respective fields.

Students should utilize their textbooks and various resources to explore the scientific advancements that have emerged from the discoveries of Einstein, Curie, or Freud They are encouraged to create a diagram that illustrates the progression of these scientific developments, highlighting the impact of each figure's contributions on subsequent research and discoveries.

In 1940, following a prolonged winter, Adolf Hitler's forces launched a blitzkrieg against Denmark and Norway, marking the beginning of their renewed conquest of Europe They swiftly invaded the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, where German troops exploited weak defenses in Luxembourg and the Ardennes Forest By circumventing the heavily fortified Maginot Line, the Nazis caught French and British forces off guard, effectively dividing the Allies and trapping the French army along with the entire British Expeditionary Force on the beaches of Dunkirk.

As the German army advanced, troops were forced to evacuate to England across the English Channel, with the Royal Navy and civilian boats assisting in the rescue efforts Despite the loss of over 68,000 men at Dunkirk, the British successfully evacuated 338,000 Allied soldiers to Dover, ensuring they could continue the fight.

A British fisherman witnesses explosions along the shore at Dunkirk and discovers thousands of soldiers boarding ships for evacuation to destroyers headed for Dover Demonstrating remarkable bravery, he joins other civilians in the rescue effort, making multiple perilous trips to transport troops to safety amidst the chaos.

Encourage students to envision themselves as civilians, similar to the fisherman in the story, tasked with aiding troops in their evacuation from Dunkirk Ask them to compose an internal monologue that captures the thoughts and emotions a civilian might feel during this critical moment If time allows, facilitate a sharing session where they can present their monologues to the class.

In the story, the fisherman inquires about the presence of individuals at Dunkirk, the northern tip of France This location holds historical significance as it was the site of a crucial evacuation during World War II Students can explore the reasons for the gathering, including the efforts to rescue soldiers and civilians, the strategic importance of Dunkirk, and the collective determination to survive amidst adversity By analyzing the narrative and utilizing their resources, students can construct a coherent paragraph that addresses the fisherman's question while incorporating essential themes of courage and unity in times of crisis.

Deep in the Heart of France, 1944: Behind Enemy Lines

By 1944, Adolf Hitler's forces had dominated much of Europe for four years, prompting the Allies to gather vast numbers of troops and equipment for an impending invasion of Western Europe As military preparations intensified on both sides of the English Channel, a secretive operation was simultaneously underway.

Operation Fortitude South was a covert intelligence initiative aimed at misleading the German high command regarding the location of the Allied invasion during World War II Its primary objective was to convince the Germans that the main assault would occur at Calais in northern France, while the actual invasion at Normandy was merely a diversion By successfully executing this deception, the Allies hoped to compel the Germans to allocate most of their troops and tanks to Calais, thereby increasing the likelihood of success for the Normandy invasion.

The successful deception during World War II led Hitler to misinterpret the Allies' invasion plans, believing the main attack would occur at Calais rather than Normandy Consequently, he ordered his Panzer divisions to remain in Calais, which allowed the Allied forces to establish a crucial beachhead at Normandy This strategic miscalculation ultimately contributed to the swift conclusion of the war in Europe within a year.

In the aftermath of World War II, a significant conflict emerged between the Soviet Union and the United States, as both superpowers perceived each other as threats to their respective ideologies and lifestyles The Soviet Union aimed to fortify its western border by exerting control over Eastern Europe, while the U.S and its allies sought to dominate as much of Europe as they could.

Following Germany's defeat, a power struggle ensued over control of the nation, leading to a compromise that divided the country between the Soviet Union and the three Western Allies: the United States, Great Britain, and France Berlin, the capital, was also split among the four powers, resulting in West Berlin becoming an isolated hub of prosperity amidst the economic challenges faced by East Germany.

In response to the mass exodus of East Germans seeking a better life in West Berlin, East German leader Walter Ulbricht constructed the Berlin Wall in 1961 to halt the flow of refugees Initially made of barbed wire and protected by armed guards, the wall evolved over the years, reaching its final form in 1975 with the addition of guard towers, dog patrols, machine guns, and minefields to prevent escapes Despite these measures, nearly 5,000 East Germans successfully made their way to West Berlin during the wall's existence.

This graphic novel explores the poignant story of a family divided by the Berlin Wall, highlighting the stark contrast in their lives on either side Through a heartfelt exchange of letters, a brother and sister maintain their connection, illustrating the profound impact of the Wall on their experiences and relationships.

Imagine a scenario where a wall is constructed around your city or town, restricting entry and exit without permission Consider how this would impact your daily life and routines Would you find yourself separated from family members or friends, unable to connect with them freely?

Students should read the textbook section on the early Cold War and the construction of the Berlin Wall Following this, facilitate a class discussion on Walter Ulbricht's motivations for building the wall to prevent East Germans from fleeing to West Berlin.

In 2001, the United States and an international coalition successfully overthrew the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, disrupting al-Qaeda's operations in the region By December of that year, the Taliban had fallen, and coalition forces took on the responsibility of maintaining peace while actively seeking out remaining al-Qaeda members.

The Afghan people initiated the establishment of a new constitutional democracy through a gathering known as the loya jirga, or "grand council." This assembly brought together tribal leaders, women, scholars, and various representatives from across the nation to elect members for the transitional government.

On October 9, 2004, Hamid Karzai was elected as Afghanistan's first democratically elected president Following this, in January 2005, Afghan citizens participated in a democratic election to choose their national government, which, while influenced by Western voting methods, also incorporated significant cultural practices rooted in Islamic traditions.

This graphic novel narrates the journey of an Afghan woman as she casts her vote in a democratic election for the first time, highlighting the mixed feelings among citizens regarding dependence on Western assistance While she embraces her democratic right, she remains connected to her Islamic customs, voting in a designated area for women Upon leaving the polling booth, she is greeted by eager reporters ready to share her story with a global audience.

Students are invited to envision themselves as either an Afghan woman casting her vote for the first time or an Afghan man observing this historic moment They will then write a journal entry from the perspective of their chosen character, detailing the significant events of that day After writing, students will share their entries in groups of four, fostering discussion and reflection on the experiences portrayed in their stories.

Students should read the textbook section on Afghanistan and the Taliban to understand the reasons behind the removal of the Taliban rulers Engage in a discussion about the significant changes in life for the Afghan people following this transition in power.

Afghans after the Taliban lost control of the country and talk about what other rights may have been gained in addition to women’s voting rights. xxii Summaries and Activities

In 2001, the United States, alongside an international coalition, successfully overthrew the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which led to the dispersal of al-Qaeda terrorist groups operating within the country By December of that year, the Taliban had fallen, and coalition forces were tasked with maintaining peace and conducting operations to apprehend any remaining al-Qaeda members.

The Afghan people initiated the establishment of a new constitutional democracy through a loya jirga, or "grand council," which brought together tribal leaders, women, scholars, and various representatives from across the nation to elect members of the transitional government.

On October 9, 2004, Hamid Karzai was elected as Afghanistan's first democratically elected president Following this, in January 2005, Afghan citizens participated in a democratic election to choose their national government This electoral process, while influenced by Western voting methods, also incorporated significant cultural practices of Islamic Afghanistan.

This graphic novel narrates the journey of an Afghan woman as she casts her vote in a democratic election, highlighting the mixed feelings among citizens regarding Western assistance While she embraces her right to vote, she remains rooted in her Islamic customs, necessitating her use of a designated polling area for women Upon exiting the voting booth, she is swiftly approached by reporters eager to share her story with a global audience.

Students are invited to envision themselves as either an Afghan woman casting her vote for the first time or an Afghan man observing this significant moment They will then write a journal entry from the perspective of their chosen character, detailing the experiences of that day After completing their entries, students will share their stories in groups of four, fostering discussion and reflection on the narratives.

Students should read the textbook section on Afghanistan and the Taliban to understand the reasons behind the removal of Taliban rulers Engage in a discussion about the significant changes in life for the Afghan people following their ousting.

Afghans after the Taliban lost control of the country and talk about what other rights may have been gained in addition to women’s voting rights. xxii Summaries and Activities

You try to get some 9:00 p.m rounds

Anticipate that your vacant beds will soon be occupied, as we expect the Allied invasion to target Calais, with troops currently being assembled For now, take a moment to rest, Gunther.

Doctor, could you review this medication for the new patient? He’s still running a fever.

Hmm Yes, Increase his dosage by

10 units, and let’s see how he’s doing in the morning

I’ve got to get this message through tonight.

So the Germans think we’re landing at Calais.

I came back to get it.

Did you see the communication that was on my desk?

Let’s have your superior decide what to do with you, eh?
