1 A Resolution on Academic Integrity Ohio University Faculty Senate Initial Draft: October 4, 2008 Revised Draft: November 4, 2008 6WHEREAS: Academic integrity serves as a foundation for Ohio University’s mission as a Higher 7Education institution; and 9WHEREAS: All educational institutions must take steps to educate and enforce standards of 10academic integrity; and, 11 12WHEREAS: Research conducted at Ohio University has observed self-reported rates of academic 13misconduct approaching 45% of students surveyed in 2006, 22% in 2007, and 31% in 2008, 14respectively; and 15 16WHEREAS: During the 2006-2007 academic year an Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Integrity, 17appointed by the Provost, drafted an Honor Code to serve as a mechanism through which members 18of the University community could discuss and learn about academic integrity; and 19 20WHEREAS: In Spring of 2007 the Student Senate passes a resolution in support of the drafted Honor 21Code for Ohio University; 22 23BE IT RESOLVED BY THE OHIO UNIVERSITY FACULTY SENATE: That the Honor Code should be 24adopted as a guiding principle for Ohio University’s efforts to promote academic integrity; and 25 26BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Provost’s office should take all prudent steps to disseminate 27the Honor Code to the University community; and 28 29BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the administration should take steps to continue collecting yearly 30data on academic misconduct/integrity topics and report the results of such efforts to the campus 31community 32 33BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Provost and other appropriate members of the University 34Community should provide yearly reports to the Faculty Senate on efforts to promote academic 35integrity at the University 36 37 38 Ohio University Honor Code 39 40Ohio University values integrity Students, faculty, administrators, and staff have a 41shared responsibility to embrace the pursuit of learning and to foster a commitment 42to academic integrity 43 44Academic integrity is the foundation of all activities that promote learning, including 45critical and imaginative thinking, discovery of knowledge, and expressions of 46creativity Academic integrity also entails refraining from plagiarism, cheating, or 47and other unethical actsdishonesty that undermines the academic values of the 48university
