Vice-Chancellor March 2014 HK Bevan Chair in Law March 2014 The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Calie Pistorius Professor Calie Pistorius took up the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull on September 2009 He was previously Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria in South Africa from 2001 until 2009 and a former chairman of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) in South Africa Professor Pistorius obtained a BSc (Eng)(cum laude) in electronic engineering from the University of Pretoria in 1979 and a BEng (Hons) (cum laude) in electronic engineering from the same university in 1981 He obtained a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Ohio State University in 1984, a PhD in electrical engineering from the same university in 1986, and a Masters degree in the management of technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994 He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, having completed the AMP programme in October 2003 Professor Pistorius is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the IET, the Royal Society of South Africa and South African Academy of Engineering, a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a Senior Member of the IEEE He is a member of boards of the Humber Local Economic Partnership (LEP), Yorkshire Universities and The Deep, and serves on the regional board of the CBI for Yorkshire and the Humber He has acted as a consultant on issues relating to national innovation policy, competitiveness, management of technology and innovation, and published Alison Yarrington 15 HK Bevan Chair in Law March 2014 Professor Yarrington was appointed Dean of FASS in May 2011 She commenced her academic career with a foundation course at Chesterfield College of Art and Design, moving from there to the University of Reading where she took her first degree in Fine Art and History of Art, majoring in the latter She then completed her PhD at Darwin College, University of Cambridge She was appointed to a lectureship in History of Art at the University of Leicester, promoted to Senior Lecturer and then to a personal chair in Art History in 1995 She was Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Leicester before leaving to take the post of Richmond Professor of Fine Art at the University of Glasgow in 2003 At Glasgow she was Head of the Department of Art History and latterly the Directorship of the Institute of Art History in the School of Culture and the Creative Arts Professor Yarrington is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and FRSA She is Chair of the Association of Art Historians, Governor of the Glasgow School of Art, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies departments in the University Dynamic and vibrant, it is a leading force of legal education in the UK and European Union We seek to maintain a broad, critical and innovative approach to legal education, which puts original research at the heart of what we Our approach to scholarship seeks to challenge the existence of doctrinal and theoretical boundaries towards the treatment of law It is our intention to be known as a Law School which combines strong expertise in key subject areas, especially those with a comparative and international perspective, with scholarship that explores the boundaries, limitations and possibilities of law 15 HK Bevan Chair in Law March 2014 Role and person description HK Bevan Chair in Law Background and Context The HK Bevan Chair of Law was established in 1992 in honour of Professor Hugh Bevan, who taught at the University of Hull from 1950 to 1988, and holders of this chair have been leading scholars in various areas of private law, broadly defined We are now seeking to fill this Chair with an academic with an international reputation in any area of private law, with a track record of obtaining research funding, and with the ability to provide leadership in developing empirical legal research Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post Research: - Maintain a level of publishing internationally leading research of high quality - Actively seek external income to fund research activities - Provide leadership for research activities within the Law School, particularly in developing empirical legal research - Participate in collaborative research initiatives within the Law School and the University - Offer guidance/mentoring to junior colleagues developing their research careers Teaching: - Contribute to core teaching in the private law field (ideally in the areas of Tort Law and/or Land Law/Trusts) - Develop contemporary methods of delivery for core and optional teaching - Providing research-lead teaching in the private law curriculum Administration/Leadership - Be part of the Law School’s Senior Management Structure as determined by the Head of School - Offer general leadership on both teaching and research for the Law School Overall Purpose of the Role This role will be carried out by individuals with significant experience in teaching and research and have established a significant reputation nationally and internationally within their academic specialism At this level, role holders’ contribution spans scholarship, teaching, research and related administration, though the weight allocated to each of these strands will vary from role to role and from time to time for individual role holders The role holder will:  Participate in the design, development and delivery of a broad range of programmes of study which may include entirely new courses  Determine, develop and carry out relevant independent research of international status and quality that makes a significant contribution to
