Contact details: Kelly Waters, Adviser – Education Safeguarding To: Headteachers, Chair of Governors, Designated Safeguarding Leads Title: Audit of School Safeguarding Practices 2017 – Group Content summary Children’s Services will be undertaking an audit of school performance in relation to their responsibilities to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils Schools are therefore required to submit the safeguarding self-review tool in line with the timescales detailed below Content Governing bodies of maintained schools have a duty under section 175 (2) Education Act 2002 to make arrangements for ensuring the conduct of the school are exercised with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils at the school Section 157 of the Act places the same requirements on Academies, Free Schools and Independent Schools The safeguarding self-review tool has been revised to reflect changes in local and national guidance, the Norfolk Safeguarding Children Board (NSCB) Priorities and learning from serious case reviews; new fields and revised fields are highlighted throughout the tool The tool forms the primary evidential basis for the Local Authority audit of school practice that is taking place between January and December 2017 and schools will be requested to submit a completed safeguarding self-review tool Rather than being produced as a word document, the review tool is accessible to all schools via Norfolk County Council’s My Schools site When you are logged on to the system, you will be able to access the tool via the ‘School Performance’ tab Further guidance on completing the tool is also available on those pages Thank you for your co-operation and support with this audit So far, 187 schools have completed a submission The overall findings of the audit support us to identify gaps in knowledge across the wider school workforce and therefore tailor future training and guidance to meet these needs accordingly A report outlining the interim findings of the audit will be made available during the Autumn Term with a full report being published in the Spring Term 2018 During the Autumn Term, the Intervention Team, with support from the Adviser – Education Safeguarding, will also commence a series of safeguarding compliance checks in a sample of schools who have submitted a self-review tool These checks will be unannounced visits focusing on statutory compliance in line with the Safeguarding Compliance Checklist The checks will have regard to the information provided by schools via the self-review process and will be used to test and validate audit returns What I need to do? All maintained schools, free schools and academies will be invited to submit a completed self-review tool for analysis in groups over three terms as follows: Group 1: 23 January – 28 April 2017 Group 2: 18 April – July 2017 Group 3: September - December 2017 If your school appears in the Group list of schools at the end of this document, please complete the self-review tool via the My Schools website by December 2017 The list also includes schools who did not complete a selfreview as requested in Groups and Once the tool is completed and saved on the My Schools site, you are not required
